    I got taken to this place as a kid.... although the sweet centre was next door to the restaurant, the sweet centre was the secret entrance to the best restaurant in the basement. No cutlery for starters....the most amazing food and cheap so the locals could afford to eat there. I loved it and got massive love for Pakistani food. What a trip down memory lane!

Most of it comes from local supermarkets and or cash and carry. Well yes it does look like a nice solid 10.. A proper family run business.. As far as I know, gulab jaman is cooked in beef dripping, like a sweet suet dumpling.. I've had this pud many times, years ago when I lived in Manchester; delicious when done right. That lamb looked superb. A lovely home cooked, slow cooked beauty of a dish. Nice one Danny! 👍

    • @rajankandola5402
      @rajankandola5402 Před 2 lety +40

      Very unlikely it's cooked in beef dripping. Especially the fact that it's a staple dessert in India, a country that forbids eating cows. It's made from milk powder fried and soaked in a sugared syrup.

    • @AM-mv6ro
      @AM-mv6ro Před 2 lety +15

      Rajan is right. A classic Gulab Jamun is made with just a few ingredients, milk solids, sugar, rose water and, cardamom powder. There are many variations but it is extremely unlikely that it is made with beef drippings even in countries where beef is consumed such as Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is meant to be sweet and beef drippings would make it a very strange flavour combination!
      I worked in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh for 14 years and ate desserts very often!

    • @williamrobinson7435
      @williamrobinson7435 Před 2 lety +1

      I was told, by a chef in Rusholme, Manchester's Indian food quarter, that despite the sacred status of the cow, gulab jaman was cooked using beef dripping when an animal had died, and that very rarity in the occasion made it a special thing.. Perhaps there are regional differences in the attitude to this..? 🤔Interesting. 👍

    Great video as always Danny! A random question though (not necessarily about this report): do you think that the service you get from the takeaways has changed as you've become more famous/well known? Do you think that you get better service now? Just subtle things that might be about the flavours, but show the takeaway in a better light - like presentation and portion size?

    • @jonathanroberts1696
      @jonathanroberts1696 Před 2 lety +2

      I agree, takeaways do not come on plates! If you saw the Funky Indian report, half the items were not ordered! Normal customers do not get complimentary items.

      @@jonathanroberts1696 …. He might be getting complimentary dishes like all food bloggers do at most restaurants , but that doesn’t mean he is lying about how tasty the food is because this place is always full of locals and always rated high by paying customers.

    • @Aevilbeast
      @Aevilbeast Před 2 lety +1

      @@jonathanroberts1696 I don't know if I missed anything but the only thing I saw that he got that he didn't ordered was the Mint sauce... But I personally wouldn't consider getting a sauce or condiment "special treatment" as it probably comes with one of the dishes. Now if he got a whole dish for free..than that'd be different.
      But at the end of the day, unlike a lot of reviewer's he still pays for all of his meals and IIRC, he doesn't tell an restaurant beforehand that he's coming. So they can't really plan ahead on making things different.
      Plus, while it might give a boost in orders for a while.. giving a reviewer special treatment would only negatively effect the restaurant in the long run, because it would cause a ton of complaints from customers who felt liked they been conned or ripped off. One of the worst things a restaurant can do, and the easiest way to get run up bad reviews, is to improperly describe or portray their food, whether intentionally or not. It's been said that customers tend to get more angry and are more apt to write bad reviews, over that than the actual quality of the food.
