As i have been seeing more and more luxury lovers talk about how they are switching from high end bags to contemporary, I wanted to discuss the possible reasons behind the switch and also how i feel about contemporary bags! xx
The reason in my opinion for the contemporary bags trend is because of the increasing price of the luxury bags and the declining quality
Be because they have nothing luxurious, bad quality and ridiculous looking
I own Hermes to lululemon bags. Lol. I honestly donât prescribe what influencers say to buy or not buy. If I like it and it fits my needs I will purchase. đ
Thatâs how it should be!
Itâs because they are crap! Everything thatâs new is cheap, terrible quality!
I think itâs because of the steep price increases of the luxury bags and the drop of quality. There used to be more difference in quality and that justified the difference in price. Now the quality of the luxury bags is not always that noticeably better (if at all) but the prices are miles apart! It definitely makes sense to go for the contemporary bags as the things stand.
I also graduated from contemporary to luxury and am not really vibing with the idea of going backwards. That said, I do still buy contemporary bags for the beach or working out so it doesn't matter if it gets wet/sandy/sweaty. Contemporary bags have a place in my collection when I don't want to ruin my luxury bags doing athletic things, but I just can't see myself going back to contemporary brands for work/social wear. I think this it's mainly trending because of the economy right now but will switch back in a year or two.
Iâve always considered coach as intro luxury for teens and twenties.
Okay, Iâve always scratched my head about the obsession around the kislux book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
The fact that capri pants, pencil skirts and big belts are coming back is a sign that fashion cycles so just keep your luxury bags even though they are not trending right now.
I think that for traveling, sport, and work, it is ok to use contemporary bags, just to "save" luxury ones from damage in the sand near the sea, for example... and honestly not everywhere I would feel safe with my luxury bags... Like in my city yes, but if I travel abroad or to some village, I will be very strange in the street with it :-) I am trying to save my money for lux, instead of contemporary, as you mentioned. But I don't want to sell few of my mid-ranges just due to what I have explained above.
I don't like the contemporary bags that are a copy or a dupe for a luxury bag design. But if they have a nice original design and i love the look of it, I'll get it. There are some Tory Burch bags that are gorgeous and unique, and they live in my head the same way gucci does.
The longchamp large le pliage is the best work and travel tote ever. Beats the hell out of the neverfull, which Iâve had and sold a few times now
I also think thatâs a mindset u have to get out of because there are things I buy that are cheaper but the materials are made way better. But also as a seamstress, once u find out the real price of fabric you will know youâre getting ripped off and paying for the name.
Absolutely fascinating topic! As a luxury bag enthusiast myself, I've noticed the shift towards contemporary bags too. Your insights shed light on this intriguing trend. It's refreshing to hear someone delve into the reasons behind the switch. Looking forward to more thought-provoking content like this!
Longchamp is NICE. So is Agnes b and Fossil.
I use my luxury and my contemporary bags in the same way and time. Decided not to invest in luxury any more - not the best quality at stratosferic price. No, thank you.
I love to change my bags every season and enjoy different colors and sizes. So MK, Coach, Furla and smaller brands are perfectly fine
No I had my time with Coach and now absolutely none of their bags is tempting me. I stuck to my luxury bags, itâs hard to go back and I donât even want to honestly.
Same here!
Some of creative designers in the contemporary fashion houses have worked for the luxury fashion houses so i think they are bringing those influences, and design to the moderate price handbag customer.
Interesting đ€
I think if you already have luxury bags doesnât make sense to buy contemporary bags. Just use the luxury bags you already have. If you are not gravitating to them anymore keep them coz they will come back in style. The thing with contemporary bags is that they go on sale and that hurts their value. If you want one get it on sale. The longchamp bag is good but it easily gets holes in the corners.
This is an excellent video discussion topic. Condition drives the resale of bags, whether they are contemporary or luxury handbags. If the bag is discontinued, Iâve seen some Coach bags sell for quite a bit.
Longchamp is my faaaaav everyday bag
Yes absolutely I have too many longchamp and so happy. Luxury bag are ok too but just one o two. Because right now so many contemporary bags out there and a fracciĂłn on the prices. â€â€â€â€
Really enjoyed your insights on the shift from luxury to contemporary bags, Angélique! It's fascinating to see how personal experiences with brands like Coach can influence our preferences over time. Your point about the resale value and investment perspective is particularly compelling. It really made me think about the true cost of luxury versus contemporary items. Thanks for sparking such an interesting discussion!
Very interesting observation! Yes, I find it particularly strange when former luxury influencers suddenly advertise cheaper bags or even dupes. Not my cup of tea đ
I use my Coach bag when the weather is bad. I will not take my Louis Vuitton bag out in bad weather.
Value to quality period- I can afford the luxury bags but not paying those prices for the mediocre quality
I have the same number of luxury and contemporary brand bags. I donât really care about whether they are one or the other. I know my style and what suits my needs. It would be a worry if at the age of 60 I didnât. I buy a bag because I fall in love with the look and the functionality of it. It may be a luxury bag for thousands of dollars or it may be a contemporary bag for under a thousand. I will say that I donât travel with luxury bags as I feel they have steal me written all over them and you never know what sort of environment you are going into when travelling. I donât know much about the American brands you mentioned. I love the British brands and my favourites are Aspinal Of London, Strathberry and Demellier. Aspinal is an interesting one. I bought a few of their bags before 2020 and at the time I never imagined that they would be good investments as they were asking very little for them preloved. But a few years later they became big favourites of the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Edinburgh and all of sudden the values have skyrocketed. Thereâs no doubt about the royal effect.
Depending on the contemporary bag brand⊠you can get a good return when you sell it as long as itâs in good condition. Iâve sold so many of my Coach bags and have gotten a good amount of my money back. But MK makes no money and theyâre harder to sell. So really it just depends. Now I would never sell your bags to a consignment or to like The Real Real. Theyâll offer you crap. But if you sell on your own via eBay or Poshmark, you get a good return even with the fees you have to pay to sell it on that platform. This is just my experience since Iâve been selling my bags since 2017.
People are only liking contemporary because of the state of the economy. the quality of luxury has been on the decline for a while yet people kept buying because they could afford to. Now things are tight but they still want to buy so they choose a more cost friendly option. As soon as the economy rebounds or balances out and everyone feels safe and good again they will go right back to buy luxury even if there are price increases and bad quality. people are using price increases and quality as a guise. Price increases aren't new and they still went to the boutique, quality has been on the decline and they still went to the boutique. It's because people are being cautious with money RIGHT NOW!!!
Guibert is excellent quality with a great price. Quality is just as good as designer brands. Yufezi is also great.
I think there comes a point where you have so many luxury bags, you stop and realize how much was spent on them and realize you donât want to spend at these inflated prices anymore and have enoughâŠfor now đ I cannot get into the Coach tabby trend thatâs going on right now.
I will say Tory Burch bags just don't resell on the pre-loved market. I've sold two brand new ones at a major loss. I have two now that won't budge. Now Coach on the other hand sells quickly. I haven't lost any money (maybe a few bucks?) selling a Coach bag, to be honest. They've also sold very quickly.
Not really... I have been looking at these brands a lot but can't get myself to pay for one yet. Not sure why?
Iâm open to contemporary bags as long as theyâre not made in China. If itâs a USA brand I expect it to be made in USA at minimum, but prefer Europe because thatâs where the craftsmen are. I donât tolerate crooked stitching messy glazing, it plastic feeling materials with MK or C monogram thrown up all over.
Combining elegance and luxury kislux
With the insane price increases that all the luxury houses are doing alongside declining quality, and the inflation happening around the world right now, people are starting to look for alternatives in the contemporary brands to have a better value for your manoey, I don't think most people see bags as an investment, they simply love the house and it's history but they refuse to pay over 10k on a classic flap that is known to have bad quality, that is why people are also starting to look at Hermes but it's not easy getting many of their bags so the mid range bags are a good solution.
Also the "quite luxury" trend that is happening right now helps because these contemporary brands don't have big logos, but they look very luxurious
Michael kors and kate spade is nowhere near coach anymore. Coach quality is insanely good, and a lot of the bags that are around 500$ keep their value. I've sold all of my coach and tory burch bags on poshmark and made my money back.
The 1st coach bag you showed, i have the original and it was my 1st designer bag that i bought at 15. That bag has 0 wear. Coach is the only mainstream contemporary brand I'll buy. Others like polene, APC, strathberry, etc, are luxury level quality. I'll buy those brands plus luxury bags if i think the quality is there. I buy my bags mainly for quality. I have mid range designer and high-end luxury bags, because different occasions require one or the other.
Iâm not hating Coachâs quality right now.
Is it good?
@ I own the studio baguette with sequins and the quality is amazing, the sequins are all sewn on individuoly. Itâs on sale right now for $255. I think the leather is more hearty than a lot of my designer bags.

Coach has always had amazing quality and leather.
Early 2000s hun, early
Amei todas as bolsas lindas e de muito bom gosto.Parabens #kislux
Michael Kors just copies other designers and they branding is too obvious. It's a cringy brand.
I love Furla, Coach, Kurt Geiger, Longchamp and Boss. They're all great bang for your buck. I've given up medium tier designer because they're not that great value anymore.
The Longchamp Le Pliage is an amazing bag. It's a great price for what you get. (Longchamp will also fix the corners for free once). If you want to go a bit higher tier get a Le Pliage Cuir or something from the Le Foulonne line. I have 2 Le Pliage Cuirs and a Penelope and they're amazing.
yes đ definitely cringy.
Thanks i will look into those đ
Come on ... Let's see.. A $400 Michael Kors bag on sale at $200.. or a $10,000 Chanel. Is the math that difficult for you?
