We are implementing this for the first time this school year. A learning curve for both of us. What do you do when they get the answer wrong? Or When you can tell they are just guessing (and getting it wrong)?
Don't repeat the question if your child gets an answer wrong during mental math. You can approach it by asking questions that lead him to figure the answer out on his own. For example, if you ask a child, "What is 7 x 5?" and receive an incorrect answer, ask a question that he most likely knows, such as "What's 5 x 5." If this is answered correctly, ask, "6 x 5 = ?" and he will most likely get the correct answer as it's one more 5. Then ask, "7 x 5" and he will most likely know the answer at this point. Also, make a mental or written note for yourself to work on the problems with incorrect answers during the regular lesson time the next day while using manipulatives.
I truly love this math program. I wish this was around for my older kids that have graduated. I have a early teen that struggles with math and we have used another program before this one and this is the only one I have seen her progress in. Thank you so much for creating this. It is a blessing.

Although I have been working on this with my eldest, just listening to you two reminded me of going to my grandparents’ for maths for a few days… and doing lots of mental math with my grandad! He was brilliant and it got to interesting with him and built our relationship.
Thank you for this discussion and demonstration. 😊 Since building the habit of attention is one of the aims of Mental Math, how do we address the child asking to have the question repeated? I notice this happens more often for lengthier word problems (maybe because the child is processing the words too on top of the numbers? We're still evaluating for possible dyslexia/adhd)... And for my other child in Grade 6 using Right Start Math, would you recommend adding more mental math exercises or would the built in ones suffice? (Saw that RSM is in your recommended list for Grade 6)
During the time of Mental Math, you'll want to be sure the questions are within his scope. If the words are too long, then simplify it to something like 14 sheep + 12 sheep (this still gives a mental picture). If the child isn't able to keep double digits in his head (yet), then work with single digits, proceed to a double digit and a single digit, then build up to double digits. I'm sorry that I can't comment on RSM, but for any math program, giving some oral work during the main lesson and five minutes of mental math either during the lesson or at another time outside of the lesson is recommended.

Always great information in your videos. Can you recommend another math besides MUS and Right Start for older kids? I do not prefer math that aligns with common core.
Thank you for your encouragement. And to dispel any myths about anything extra being added to MUS to align with common core, the equations in MUS is the way it has always been. They teach the how and why mathematical operations work and then eventually phase some of those details out as skills are mastered. MUS did make changes a few years ago that allowed it to be used by those who required Common Core compliance. The changes were mostly adding extra practice problems to each section. The differences are so minor that they didn’t even change the teacher books.
