OMG, I’m SO GLAD you reacted to this, the performance is SO FREAKING AMAZING😻
I have SO MUCH RESPECT for George as a person:
This performance is just a few months after the love of George’s life - Anselmo Feleppa - died of AIDS. George had found out that Anselmo might have HIV/AIDS just the night before Freddie Mercury passed away from AIDS in November 1991. When George did his (probably most famous) performance of “Somebody To Love” at Freddie’s tribute concert in April 1992, Anselmo was in the audience. (He had been positively diagnosed by then; George said later, it was the worst day of his life, performing such a famous song in Fred’s honor and knowing his boyfriend was terminally ill.) Anselmo passed away in April 1993, and this performance was in December of the same year. At the end of the song here… when George says “HE LEFT US!”… I guess it’s just my imagination, but I always imagine he’s talking about Anselmo (and maybe Freddie).🙏

This 11 minute song appears on an album called Five Live. It was a collaboration he did with Queen. It was a charity album. It’s a rare one and I’m so lucky to have it. There’s also a very interesting video that goes along with it, that you can catch on the old MTV channel or CZcams. George was a undeniable talent. And what he could do with other people songs were just amazing. Years ago, I remember reading that his contemporaries were a little afraid when he would cover their music because it would cease to be theirs and then would belong to George. It’s exactly what Elton said about. Don’t let the sun go down on me. He said George just took that song to another level.

You should watch 'Freedom' from the same concert. Tbh, his whole set was amazing! The concert is the 'Concert of Hope', or 'Prince's Trust Concert'. It was an AIDS benefit concert, organised by George, hosted by David Bowie and also featuring KD Lang and Mick Hucknall from Simply Red. The main VIP guest and patron, was Princess Diana.
I used to have the concert on video and played it to death. Well I played George's part to death and a couple of KD Lang's songs. It's one of the best live performances I've ever seen and heard! Incredible stage presence and charisma, an amazing voice, fantastic songs and with an incredible band and backing singers. They stayed loyal to him throughout his career and he to them too. He even paid them when he wasn't touring! One of the best singers of his generation. One of the best songwriters of all-time. He was a top notch producer too and played most of the instruments on his studio albums. All his albums are great but for me, his masterpiece is 'Listen Without Prejudice'. It's quite simply, one of the greatest albums of all-time! Yep, in his day, he was right up there, alongside MJ, Madonna and Prince. A true global megastar! To top it all, he was a thoroughly decent human being, intelligent, thoughtful, kind and with real integrity. He didn't just talk the talk. After he died, it emerged that, over the years, he'd given most of his vast fortune away, mainly to charities and good causes but also to people he met, or heard about, that needed help. All done with no PR, no publicity. In fact he always insisted that there was zero publicity! A great artist and a great man. Sorely missed! :)

George was a once in a generation talent. Songwriter, producer and singer...there was none better who could do all three. Faith is not my favorite album of George's. I reserve that for Older. However, to create Faith again including songwriting and producing in addition to singing at the age of 23 still boggles my mind. I find him much more compelling as a human being than any other artist, period. Talk about having the courage of your convictions, George was the very definition of that courage. Taking on an unfair record company contract, done, charity being a coat he wore every day, not just twice a year, done, staying friends with those he grew up with, done, being a true friend to those that needed him, done. Obviously, I am a fan because of his talent just as I am a fan of a great many talented people. I am an admirer of George as a person because of what he did for others. Sometime just google the charities that George supported and just how generous he was. Of course, no one knew about his generosity until after he passed away. He always gave anonymously, never wanting to take the credit. I actually think he would have been embarrassed to take the credit, because that is not why he did it. He did it because he could, because he wanted to and because he felt it was the right thing to do.
A great many of his songs has touched my heart but I recently went back and listened to "John and Elvis Are Dead" and I just started crying. In the video, which is visually stunning, George sings about a friend who went into a coma in 1975 and then suddenly wakes up and no longer understands the world. His friend is comparing today's culture to the culture he remembers from 1975 and finds it lacking. Not just in the lack of true talent in music, like Arthea Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Queen, T-Rex and Elton (70's Elton) but also in what the 70's and early 80's were all about. Fighting for things that mattered. The friends says "hey all the girls they look the same, don't they know just what their mothers paid in blood and tears to change". I identified with that verse so strongly. I no longer recognize the kind of feminism that is being practiced today, I am sorry to say. It definitely is not the feminism I fought for. Then the video shows a young Princess Diana, then Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandala and he says "we walked through the walls until we found the truth and said change it, it's ugly just change it. Meaning these three dedicated themselves to significant, important change. Talking about the song George said it was a lament for the culture that he grew up with where people and music were often about righting wrongs. In addition, he said that religion seems to be everywhere, but no one is acting like a Christian. When you think of the songs of John Lennon who is most known for his song "Imagine", Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Elvis Presley's The Impossible Dream, then it isn't hard to understand why George chose these three. I urge you to listen to all of these songs and then watch George's John and Elvis Are Dead video. If you do, I know you will understand what he is talking about. Sorry, to get so deep. I know a lot of good has occurred in the decades since 70's. But I don't think the music is as meaningful and I don't think we treat each other very well. I guess because no one actually talks to face to face anymore people feel free to "say" anything no matter how much it might hurt someone else and that makes me really sad.
