TOTK Ending Cutscene: Link’s smile hidden out of bounds! (found by mistress-light)

they got a custom freecam mod from a friend and painstakingly beat ganondorf over and over to bring us this since link and zelda warp around. what they found was that link smiles the moment when zelda says, “but when i felt something, like a warm, loving embrace, i woke up.” but this is never seen during normal gameplay because the camera is facing them from the back. it’s very cute.. he’s happy she felt him.
it’s timed perfectly too so you know what she’s talking about. i’ve seen zelink deniers be like “i think she was talking about the anti-draconification magic” as if zelda wasn’t unconscious during fall but started to wake up when link grabbed her and hugged her during the descent or carried her out of the water. this is just further proof it was about link.
some details:
you can see his expression transition go from closed mouth → “when i felt something,” slight tooth smile → “like a warm, loving embrace” open mouth smile.
when he smiles wider his eyes move down slightly (kind of makes him look like hes staring into space) before they glance back up afterwards which makes it look like he’s supposed to be recalling his actions from earlier and connecting the dots to what she’s saying. his smile is so spontaneous and authentic here it’s sweet.

@@kit76149 if you compare him to other incarnations you can really tell how little emotion BOTW/TOTK Link has. Yes they’re subtle but to the point where he looks apathetic to any situation around him. He didn’t even react to the big reveal with Zelda save for a small look of mild surprise.

This ending definitely deserved more expressiveness from Link. Even Age of Calamity's ending had him smile at Zelda.

@@nolanmartIn the english version, it is like a mission. In the Japanese version is a diary to Link. He usually says, “okay, I need to grab some carrots and I will be there in Kakariko Village, no biggie!” There is more reallly, but I cant remember the rest though.

@@genericname4168also like there's nothing that's keeping link from just going and living in a house. The Knight order of Hyrule doesn't exist anymore so he's not bound by any sort of duty. I choose to interpret it as he stays with Zelda because he wants to, cause otherwise there's no real reason for him to do what he does

@@evanbao93 Seriously, there was 0 excuse for this. It honestly feels like they just went the lazy route of having him not emote (or not wanting to show it in this case). Even the big Zelda reveal from the memories he barely even reacts to, he should've had a Skyward Sword-like moment similar to when Zelda was being crystalized, like he obviously cares for her! The game could've given so much to the storytelling if it just felt like Link was an actual human being sometimes, they do this better in other Zelda games and even Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity just through grunts and facial expressions, it's beyond me why they thought having him just be blank was the better option for BotW and TotK.
One of the rare times botw Link has an expression and they censor it.

Idk if they have a character bible of sorts for Zelda, but one of their core character traits must be that Link and Zelda can't show any overt romantic gestures. They tend to avoid redoing anything SS did, so maybe that extends to Zelink. I can tell the devs really love it deep down though.

I was expecting a kiss at the end, everything was so emotional 😭
But the loving embrace is probably Rauru and Sonia when they use their power through Link to change her back. She said it felt like she's been sleeping forever and then awoke with what felt like a loving embrace. Then says thank you while looking up. To then turning to Link to talk about them. She felt that loving feeling from the two people who looked after her and Link, I don't know how long she was with them before shit hit the fan but it would seem like she loved them dearly.
Or it could mean both, Link literally was embracing her
but zelda was still unconscious while falling. that’s why (and especially along with link smiling when she says it) i think it was link hugging or holding her that woke her up. rauru and sonia channeling their power through link’s hand turned her back into a human but didn’t immediately wake her from her slumber

I kinda hope that maybe if there's going to be DLC for this game that they do something to the ending scene.
I don't know what maybe some extra challenge to unlock an alternative ending where we actually see link smile or something happens between link and zelda to show a more romantic side of things.
But i do realize this is just wishful thinking but can't help but think that Nintendo were going to do something with link's smile. It had to mean something at some point.
Yeah my wish for dlc is post game with more romantic interactions with link and Zelda they've been hinted at enough, just make it canon. Or make botw/totk a trilogy that shows more of that I'm tired of them beating around the bush link is his own character now u can't even change his name, he has his own backstory, and personality and long time Zelda fans know this

That is weird to me, but super interesting. How were they able to animate something that wasn’t “on camera”?? I thought they could only animate what was shown on camera
3D animation doesn't require things to be in frame. It's 3D. You choose what is in frame. It's not like drawings, it's more similar to filming real people. They animated him smiling but decided to not show it, and go for a shot of the castle
… i want you to go outside an close your eyes, if you ask anyone, they will still be moving around Even though you cant see them.
The same is true is 3d games, just because you cant see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there, unless the developers decide to load something in or out
its not a drawing or a cartoon, its a 3d environment. so the frame can show any part of that, and the hidden parts will still be there

In-engine cutscenes often remove models that aren't needed. You should look up some of the out of bounds cutscenes in Resident Evil 4; they show how lighting and models are popped in and out as needed really well.
When Zelda turns to Link, it’s assumed Link is looking at her, like it’s his POV. So that’s probably why they didn’t use his model at that point

they lived in the same house, they slept in the same bed, they visited the lover's pond, in the true BOTW ending flowers falling representing love are around them, paya and mipha both speculate that Link is in love with Zelda, look at Link's little reaction to finding out that Zelda turned into the light dragon, they walked very close together compared to when their relationship was purely professional

I believe it was all 3 of em (4some confirmed?) however in the secrets ending cutscene mineru states how rauru and Sonia used their power to transform her back and Zelda acts surprised about this, so I’m not quite sure it’s kinda confusing
the great thing about these stories is that they are your own -- zelda and link can end up together if you want or they can just be friends if you! that being said, two attractive young people the same age that have shared experiences and trauma that seemingly spend like 75% of their waking time together, along with a shirtless embrace and dive into the water? not a hard case to make that there are romantic feelings there along with a pretty romantic ending! i just want the best for these two bbs 🥹
Well Zelda is allready confirmed to be romantically in love with link via the kass side quest witch states “Zelda only had eyes for link” and “the princess love for her fallen knight awakens her power” plus in totk we literally have the most overt memory 8 witch is basically Zelda telling her dad that she’s in love with link. As far as link goes it’s not as easy to prove since he is silent but there is a lot of details that strongly supports it. In the Japanese version of btow link says “I want too see Zelda’s beauty again with these eyes of my own” and he calls Zelda’s voice “beautiful” and in totk there is a quest called “my sweet princess”
