I love how Ganondorf first meeting Link is basically "Really? You're Rauru's last hope? Seriously?"
It's cool seeing him go from annoyed and dismissive to pleasantly surprised when Link does prove to give him a decent fight to complete breakdown when Link starts beating him.

      @cato3277 Před 11 měsíci +180

Exactly my feelings. Seeing him use conventional combat in an almost cocky way to nearly cheating by using almost all magical attacks is super satisfying for character building.
I almost wish we could’ve done that phase one battle with Ganondorf around a midpoint in the game just to give that fear and respect he has for Link more time to develop. Like he gets pissed that we’re making progress and shows up after we beat two temples, expecting to wipe the floor but getting beaten back.

Like everytime you leave the temple the corruption on Link's arm would overwhelm his mind and he gets taken to an astral or mental arena where he fights hydrated Ganon from corrupting his body and taunts him for his failures.

      Beating the:
Fire Temple: Gloom Clubs with projectiles.
Lighting Temple: Gloom Sword with phantom Ganons.
Water Temple: Gloom Spear with multiple dashes.
Wind Temple: Frequent use of the Demon King bow, and circling projectiles.

Not only did it fill me with a sense of dread, knowing this was going to be a seriously difficult boss, but it was a great way to exemplify his power. It's weird how the last time we actually saw Ganondorf in a mainline game was in Twilight Princess in 2006, not counting the spin-offs and Smash, and even there he only appeared near the end. He's Nintendo's most iconic bad guy behind Bowser so they knew people wanted him back. He was unwelcome in Twilight Princess. They had a fine villain with Zant, but then when Ganondorf came into the picture they had to change Zant's personality into a comedic doofus to make Ganondorf intimidating in comparison. If you have to change around your other villain to be lamer for ganondorf to seem like a threat at all, maybe don't bother having ganondorf. A villain you've faced over and over again only gets less threatening with each defeat, doesn't matter if they get some new power, it's just sad sore loser syndrome.
He was never a very interesting bad guy anyway, no depth, then again this is nintendo we're talking about here, asking them for depth is like suggesting to a snowman to have a trip to the sahara desert.

@@Vaquix000 Agree on Twilight Princess, but the last thing i look forward when facing the literal Satan of that universe is his "depth". Bad guys like him don't need a sad backstory, they need presence and charisma first, and Ganondorf has plenty to spare. I want him to feel like a real threat for Hyrule and Link, i don't want him to go "muh childhood, muh people, i'm actually just a misunderstood boy angry at the world". What I personally love about this version of Ganondorf is that the guy shows respect; when told of Link and how he will have the sword that seals the darkness, and is told to remember this name, he actually is interested. He desires worthy foes to fight, which is a nice little addition; gives him more personality than simply just wanting to destroy the world.

Only when his ass is getting beat. Throughout the game, Ganondorf constantly distrspects Link, attributing all his success to Rauru's arm and magic, and even after defeating his army, he still deems Link "not worthy" enough to be a fitting opponent. When he transitions to phase 2, he actually seems to respect Link a little more, if only to unleash his full power. But at the end, hes a sore loser because he couldnt bear to be defeated by anyone, let alone someone who carries a "fragile sword" so he becomes the Demon Dragon in desperation, and by that point his opinions on Link are basically null.

What blows me away about this version of Ganondorf (apart from Matt Mercer absolutely killing the performance) was the sheer attention to detail that went into his various designs for this game. He really felt like a combination of so many previous incarnations, all rolled into one.
His design is classic Ganondorf, but when he gets the Secret Stone, he's the spitting image of Demise, his original predecessor, which really accentuates his rise to ultimate power, and apotheosis right before his "ascension". Right down to the black scales hiding in his clothes, and glowing pulsing hair.
But not only then, but after he absorbs the stone and becomes a dragon, his eyes IMMEDIATELY reminded me of Malladus, the "Demon King" from Spirit Tracks, which felt like an incredible tie-in, and further implies that he really is a king of demons.
At every moment in this game, he exudes power over everything around him, and it's honestly incredible. They absolutely nailed him this time.

Not to mention that during his draconification, he also looked like the serpent form of Calamity Ganon, which is also a pretty good nod to the fact that Ganondorf and Ganon are essentially the same thing. And then there’s the whole obsession with power, his Triforce piece.

Incredible? He's just a generic reoccuring villain, nintendo loves to do that because they hate making new characters. Anyone called a "Demon King" is painfully generic and ganondorf has never been a exception to this. Never has there been any depth to him, he's just a cartoony villain for the sake of it, it's fiction for kids. As for anything that could be described as "Incredible" about this character... Incredibly generic? Hmm... ncredible is a word that means more than people seem to think, I don't use it lightly. Just like people like to toss out the word masterpiece.
But let's see. Overused typical black and red color scheme? Check.
      Bland cartoony villain dialogue? Check.
      No depth? Check.
      Called "The Demon King?" Check.
Been beaten multiple times already? Check.
      Turns into a dragon? Check.

How is he the greatest video game villain of all time? He's just some guy with hair hair and a big nose. No depth. Been beaten multiple times, not to the laughable extent of nintendo's other favorite villain bowser but enough to the point they're a non-threat.
Ganondorf was already boring in Twilight Princess. They had to suddenly change Zant into a comedy villain and change his personality to make ganondorf seem threatening in comparison. If you have to make your other villains less scary to make your main villain more scary, your main villain is a failure. Actually I was even bored to see him in Wind Waker, I had already beaten ganondorf in ocarina of time, and if a villain is beaten they never get that sense of threat ever again... well, except to those who have the memory of a goldfish.

@@Vaquix000 I have to completely disagree with you. Ganondorf has had many different iterations, as you said, and has had many reasons to hailed as an amazing villain.
First off, his first appearance in his Ganondorf form in Ocarina of Time was completely new, and made his presence so threatening throughout the game.
With Wind Waker, they gave him reasons behind his motives, and it was also confirmation that Ganondorf still remembers events from hundreds of years ago(because he speaks of the hero of time). He speaks about the harsh conditions of living in the Gerudo desert and not being accepted by Hyrule royalty. It’s a very interesting take on the character.
What made Twilight Princess Ganondorf so menacing wasn’t because they made Zant a comical villain. Zant was the same, just hidden behind a mask and pretending to be something he wasn’t, and he finally showed his true self in his final scenes. I thought he was fantastic. What made Ganondorf threatening was the fact that the six sages failed to execute him after Ocarina of Time, and resorted to putting him in another world to stay out of Hyrule, which leads him to use that to his advantage with the twilight realm.
It’s been 17 years since Twilighg Princess, and this is the first full Ganondorf incarnation we have had since. They kept him just as menacing, with his mummy form to his normal form, and I was ecstatic to see him again after such a long time. His design and voice are fantastic as well.
His characters ambiguity and constant mysterious returns(but not with every game of course) are some of the things that make him my favorite video game villain of all time.

I found it intriguing that when Ganon wielded his secret stone, he somehow gained full mastery of it. Even Zelda had to train to use her time powers effectively. The moment Ganondorf donned it, he transformed into his demon king form, spawned bloodmoons and spawned hoards of monsters. In addition, Ganon has the strangely specific title "Master of the Secret Stone." There are other people who wield Secret Stones but only Ganon has been called a master of one.
As a side note, since Mineru's dead Link should get her stone. He is the perfect candidate, he is a hero who saved the world and him having the "Spirit" of the Hero.

    • @peveral4246

Considering Ganondorf could summon swarms of Molduga and create gloom puppets even before he gained the secret stone, it's safe to assume he had long since mastered his powers (especially when you consider that other incarnations of Ganondorf have lived for centuries and only grew stronger with age). Like Mineru says in one of the cutscenes, secret stones only amplify people's existing abilities. They don't suddenly grant proficiency in them, hence why Zelda had to train to control her time power.

    • @speedude0164

I think the single biggest thing distinguishing Ganondorf's Demon King body from his Gerudo body is that he can summon the Blood Moon at will. We already know he draws power from it and uses it to summon monsters to replace the ones Link killed, and we see a summoning ability of a similar magnitude in the cutscenes. Hyrule was basically fighting against an infinite Blood Moon during the Imprisoning War.
Link with a secret stone would literally look like Jin from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

This outing of Ganondorf honestly seems really lackluster apart from the final boss fight. I really really loved the way the final quest was introduced and completed. When you first get the final quest causally you've already been playing the game for at least a solid 20 hours, and pretty much that whole time the game teaches you that Ganondorf is EXTREMELY powerful, and that any attempt to stop him has failed.
Then finally after finding the 5 sages, restoring the 4 regions of Hyrule, learning about what happened during the Imprisoning War, and reuniting with the Master Sword, the game gives you one last directive: *Destroy Ganondorf.* It gave me chills when I saw that, but it made me really excited to finally face off against the evil bastard.
The fight itself was great, and I loved all 3 phases, but the ending was absolutely captivating. I loved seeing this dragon version of Ganondorf exploding in a gigantic pillar of red light just to be followed by "Destroy Ganondorf: Completed" popping up on my screen over the cloud of smoke. This game has been an amazing experience so far, but it's little stuff like those amazing quest transitions that help to set the game apart from the rest, and somehow makes me love this game even more.

The last time Ganon was an active and actualized threat in a Zelda game was Twilight Princess or Windwaker. TP is weird though cause he was puppeteering Zant nearly the whole time, so IMO Wind Waker was the last game to really do him justice as a game spanning threat.
The fact that this iteration got so much love in both design and character expression speaks wonders to the love that went into TOTK. After nearly 17 years of no legitimate Ganons, we get this absolute beast of a character. The design is cool, he looks threatening, big, and he wears his Gerudo roots on his sleeve. The character is THE Ganon, pure evil packaged into an arrogant attitude that wants nothing more than to plunge the world into darkness. This isn't some goopy force of evil, or some underling trying to RP as the demon king, this IS THE DEMON KING pure and simple.
I'm so happy to see Ganon given the character his design and concept deserves, no more wasted potential like in BOTW, this is the Demon King baby

This one is even more boring than the last one, now you actually have to look at his goofy human face and hear is generic cartoony villain lines, at least the other one had a pretty pink boar. A glowing pretty pink boar is SOME originality at least, now what do we get... His transformation is if you asked a random person on the street to draw a demonic dragon, that's how bland it is.

Im pretty surprised from all the comments ive read about ganon's goofy ass smile; I was expecting more people to notice how similar it looks to midna's in twilight princess. If anything the devs toned it down a little since midna's was even more ridiculous and expressive.
First time I saw it, I figured it was an intentional throwback to TP being that it was the last zelda game we've seen ganondorf be the main antagonist in a while. Tho im sure the other zelda veterans noticed it too.

      @josephgoddard7438 Před 11 měsíci +2

@@rynemcgriffin1752 Well there was no link in any of the past scenes, and zelda was from the future, so nobody knows about the master sword in their original fight against ganondorf, and even if they did, the master sword wouldnt work yet like at the start of the game. For timeline placement, it’s all hundreds of thousands of years after anything in Zelda. Devs themselves have said it’s at the very end of all timelines (so they kinda merge and the nonsense timeline split is over). The Zonai came down many hundreds of thousands of years after any previous zelda games, name their kingdom Hyrule and continue demise’s curse, etc.

    • @nicke5801

@@josephgoddard7438 If thats the explanation, thats honestly pretty dumb. What happened to the kingdom of Hyrule that already existed? Hyrule was named after Hylia, why did the Zonai coincidentally just name their kingdom Hyrule, and after everything thats happened with all their wisdom, why haven't they heard of Ganon or the Master Sword? It also retcons all of Ganondorf/Ganons previous lore, so... I think it makes much more sense to just put BotW/TotK in their own separate universe unrelated to the other games.
