      Same, agreed. I wouldn't remember where anything is. So I would just be doing either moves that don't make sense or illegal moves because other pieces are occupying where I'm trying to send my piece

    Real fun content -- their energy levels are off the charts as usual, plus it's super impressive how they're keeping track of the position from start to finish while being chaotic to each other and calculating moves in advance. It's almost like those were not blindfolds but VR headsets

      Plus at the end they looked to the side at the virtual game board, showing they had it up on a screen. The blindfold was to make sure neither saw it during the match.

      There is actually a huge point to it since if you can see the board it's vastly easier to visualize where the pieces are/can go. Think about knight and bishop moves.

    That might have been the most solid handshake in the history of chess. Maybe that is the way to avoid the awkwardness at chess tournaments: Make the player shake hands blindfolded

    I love it when all you streamers get together cuz it shows that you just love chess so much and you don't care about the streaming like other streamers. Chess has always felt like a family game to me. My sister taught me to play and after she passed away, I continued playing chess to honor her. It's probably why I have to watch these ladies/gentelmen play, it gives me some sort of Solace. You know I never actually beat my sister in chess the whole time she was alive? Anyways I love that you guys are bringing people together that's what matters 💝

    I watched a lot of players playing blindfolded, and they always super focus, and Andrea head is like all over the place, which make it even more impressive she actually won.

    2:15 try telling that to Magnus. He told 60 minutes that he forgot the position, so he just replayed the game in his head and remembered where he put his rook.....while holding 20 other positions in his head

      Magnus have a special memory so he never forget, just can't remember the English name for it. But he basically remember all the positions on all the games he ever played

    Damn. My limit is like 15 moves each side so far. If I want to find a tactic it takes me like 10-15 minutes. I don’t see the board as clear so I have to replay every single move and then picture small sections of the board and see/deduce the position. Only after a bunch of repetition like that does the position become clear enough for me.

      Years of practice analyzing games, chess positions, and thinking multiple moves ahead where you have to visualize the board several moves ahead of the current position. It becomes second nature at some point.

      @@EnglishMike are you sure it is that? Do you have that skill yourself? Because for example, you can solve a rubiks cube blindfolded and not be an expert cube solver because you can train specifically for that skill.

      Same. I saw Levy and Hikaru do it and I thought I wish I could do it like that but Levy's an IM and Andrea while she is a good chess player her ratings both online and FIDE aren't that great. This is probably just "cope" but I wonder is there any chance this was fake or maybe they trained on a blindfold for a long time which would also explain it, the speed of it.

      @@RaniaIsAwesome They both grew up playing chess and when they talk about a game after they can instantly visualize positions that were played over an hour beforehand when talking about plays. So there's no reason to believe it's fake.

      @@EnglishMike I am a decent player normally but I can't play blindfolded and have pretty bad short-term memory. Always feel awkward when the opponent wants to analyse with me and I, having forgotten most of the game already, am like "yeah, sure, I guess"

      Chess players are trained to visualize future positions of the pieces anyway so they can find the best moves several turns ahead. That trains the memory in a way that helps with blindfold chess. There also much be some pattern recognition going on too since most chess games evolve into similar arrangements of pieces that chess players see all the time and can recognize instantly.

    Back sixty years ago, I had taped a large chess board above my bed. A friend and I used to play in class. Since we got A's in the class and never wrote anything down, we never got into trouble.

    Whats the purpose of the blindfolds when there aren't any pieces on the board anyways?
    I'm pretty sure I would lose against both, even when they can't see anything and I play normal.

      They set it up exactly how they would normally play blindfold chess. It prevents them from using the board in front of them (or any other cues) when visualizing the positions of the pieces.

      It's a lot easier to visualize _anything_ when you cut off your sight completely. No images to distract you and take energy, just you and your mind.
