Buttons work for most apps and screens (i.e. skip song, etc)
Stopwatch - buttons easily start, stop, and reset as you would expect
Song control - buttons play/pause and skip forward/backward

Watch has excellent haptic feedback on buttons
Screen looks very nice and the watch is very quick and responsive. An overall pleasurable experience

Mic works well for Google assistant
There is AOD
Excellent watch faces (plus many more in the play store of course)
AOD when prepping for a workout (the start swipe is ready and it reminds you that you did not start yet (so that you don’t accidentally forget to start tracking the WO)
Swim workout disables screen! But buttons still work

My testing: Round 1 included heavy use but no workouts tracked. My watch lasted from 3:30AM one day until 10:30AM the next day, at which time it went into power saving mode. The watch then lasted until 6:30 the following day (31 Hrs of normal use, 51 including power saving mode)
Round 2 included multiple workouts within a day. The watch lost 70% between 7AM and 9PM (~18.5 hrs per full charge)

Suunto app has 70+ sport modes
Easily integrates with Strava, TrainingPeaks, etc.
Detailed insights
Button controls during workouts

CONCLUSION:
Amazing smartwatch in all regards except for the battery life. This watch would be incredible for people doing logn hikes and exploring deep in the woods, if not for the limited battery life. But that is not who this watch is really for. This is for your fitness and adventure nut who has a day job and just wants to do intense workouts on weekends or after work, and for that, this watch is incredible!

UPDATE: I have been continuing to test this watch and accuracy is a relative term. I noticed that altitude measurements are typically accurate within +/-8 ft. So that means you won't be using this to determine if things are level of course, but it should get the job done if you are hiking up a mountain and want to know your general progress.
Heart rate is also accurate within +/- 2 BPM from my measurements, which is pretty standard for a 2 diode input.
Location accuracy is dependent on the signal strength in your area, but this should suffice for the average runner looking to track their workouts.
garmin fenix 5 is worth buying in 2020? thanks Mikr
Mike O'Brien garmin fenix 5 is worth buying in 2020? Thanks Mike
Does it have bluetooth for headphones?
@@huiarama good question that one interests me too!
Just wanted to know if the GPS still works if you get out of signal. I want to get it but just not sure if it works or not outside of town were there is no signals.
I'm also really happy with this watch. Changed from Apple to Android so had to sell AW5... This is great compromise between "true" sport watch and smart watch. Battery life is about one and half days with AOD and one hour workout which is really ok for me. Oura ring tracks my sleep so i can charge it at night. Nokia smart scale, Oura ring and this Suunto 7 are all syncing really nice with Google Fit.
Oh that's a good idea to use the ring alongside this! I'm glad you like the watch!
How have you sorted out Suunto 7 and Google Fit sync? For me it doesn't sync correct distance.
@@joonasantikainen damn, i hadn't notice that problem before... I have mostly done indoor sports lately thanks to "winter" in Helsinki.. But yes true... For some reason Google Fit shows different distance that Suunto app.
Hi Mikko,
I am an Android user and planning to make a transition to an iPhone. I'm a bit confused if I should invest in a AW7 Or Suunto 7.
Since you've used both, can you please share your exp with both...
@@shivenmehru1571 definetely AW7 with iPhone
Suunto just makes great watches.
Im a big fan of suunto since suunto vector was released and im still using it. 😎
Dear Mike O‘Brien
thanks for this very informative and interesting video.
It really helps whether to buy one, or not.
Greetings from Winterthur (Switzerland)
Thanks for the review.
I wish there were quality comparisons of this watch to Garmin models... Thank you anyway!
Great video as always.... I was interested in this watch, but that is crazy huge!!!!
Is this better than the Galaxy Watch Active 2 or the Apple Watch when it comes to tracking fitness? What do you think?
I have active 2 nd my watch is awesome.
Thanks for sharing! I am glad you like your watch!!
Mike O'Brien probably the Active 2, but the Apple Watch has one of the best wrist based heart rate trackers out there
Apple watch 4 and 5 are the best crossovers out there for smartwatches. Galaxy Watch and Active 2 have been trashed just as bad by DCRainmaker and my experience with the Galaxy Watch was horrible. I really like this watch, just wish all the info was in the Suunto app (no step counts), but I'll still take it over the Samsung watches.
apple watch. galaxy watch. wearos
I know this is a weird question, but where did you get that flanell? It's really nice.
Thanks for the demo. I was wondering how a Multi-sport Watch running Wear Os would work when I do not have access to the touch screen. I am glad Suunto apps work of the buttons
Just ordered this one from sale for. I dont know what the watch was when it came out but I got it for 259 euros(about 300 dollars) which for me sounded like a good deal. I use Strava when I do cross-country skiing and I find it terrible to use with my phone. This watch was also one of the best looking watches out there. Hopefully I can get some years out of this watch. I´ve heard there is an update also for the watch which might increase the battery life and some of the apps.
Thanks for a great review. It does seem like this is an AMOLED screen. The one things I dislike about it, is once you're in Suunto app/features, the preferred, negative display turns positive, as in the background goes white as text turns black. Especially if it is an AMOLED screen, this is just a total waste of battery. If not, still, I prefer some kind of consistency. Well, I'm a bit obsessive having negative display setups, as they're much easier on the eyes, day or night. My PC, Android phone are both setup in "dark mode". Thanks again! 🍻🍻!
I’m stuck between this and the Fossil Gen 5😭
SAME!! the fossil gen 5 has horrible reviews but I want it so bad too lol
@@kyleedavis9176 I know right!
I was but decided to take Suunto 7
Fenix 6X Sapphire I feel is better for backcountry and rugged lifestyles.
Yes I hate how dim they are prefer Suunto
I've noticed Sapphire glass is amazing for Protection but GG is brighter although you have to take care of them
Hi do you have any idea how long the suunto 7 can track an activity, for example if i go on a 8 days Roadtrip and I'd like to track my route, would it track through gps and map it out as long as i don't end the activity? And can you minimise the activity recording screen to use other functions while tracking the activity?tq
Does Suunto 7 have any memory ??, if so, how much ??
I can use my Bluetooth headphones for this ?
Great review thanks! I guess it does not run nikeplus app, does it?
You've mentioned that this watch doesn't pair much with third party devices, does it have a heart sensor belt? And is possible to pair with one?
Appreciate the review. Is it possible to record activity via the watch and sync to Strava afterwards, or does the activity need to be launched via the Strava Wear OS app?
Hey Mike, long time since I've stopped by to say hi! Hope you're doing well.
Now on to my question. I recently bought a sailing boat and I'm looking for a smart watch to go with my adventures. I'd prefer something less pricey than the Garmin Marq Captain (2K EURO). Any suggestions?
Thanks, brother!
Wow that is exciting. I am glad to hear that your investing is paying off and you bought a sail boat. As for a watch, I might recommend the Garmin Quantix 5. I have never sailed, but I heard this watch is a great one for marine use, and it is about a quarter the cost of the Marq. If that is still too much, you might want to check out the basic Samsung Watch Active 2. It costs much less and is basically just a versatile smartwatch. Hope this helps! Have fun sailing
Great tips, Mike! Thank you for taking the time to answer.
Many users complain about short battery life, and you can only access data with their new app - on phones only!
Does it have hiking under sport mode?
And can I connect earphones on Bluetooth?
Thanks!
Really good review though!!
Garmin, Polar, Coros should at least make the screen a visual appeal like Sunnto.Great going.Time for LTE on sunnto 2021. Will you rate this above Galaxy watch 3 ?
yes if your priority is training
Question: does the Suunto app sync back with Google Fit to keep data?
Hi, do you know why I can't track my sleep when I sleep during the daytime? It seems that it works only the night. Thank you for the video! Very good explanation. Moreover do you know how can I set the watch to stop count after 2 km for example? For interval training. Or the only way is manual?
awesome content
Thanks
Creating a route is useless if you cannot transfer that route to the watch,or am I missing something?
Thanks for this review. I’m looking to ditch the Apple Watch, this is very helpful.
If you like to track activities, this might be a great option for you! Enjoy your new watch!
if you're using iPhone it probably not a good idea
@@nothinginteresting1833 I used it with an IPhone, there are no Problems or Issues !
@Reiner O what he means is that Apple tos makes software on the App Store very limited, as you will see Apple watch functions have more then much others
I have been looking for a smartwatch for a while I really love the look in the features of this watch but it doesn't have a speaker I cannot make phone calls use Google assistance and can not use Google translate which is the one that I must have same as I am learning a new language with Google translate it's helping me a lot on my cell phone
Hmm then in sounds like this is not the watch for you. Did you decide on Tizen OS vs Wear OS?
No sensor connections on a $500 watch? Suunto will continue to be an also-ran until they fix that oversight.
This watch tracks kitesurfing? And shows the path that you run in the sea ?
do you ever go back and update reviews when there have been significant updates and improvements?
Does the watch have a barometer? Can it display sea level pressure?
Does it have respiration & oxygen monitor?
Why its so costly and in India huh already available samsung active 2 and watch 4
battery how many hours does the running function last?
Is there a temperature sensor on this just like the 9?
Do all Suunto have basketball? I had the UA healthband a few years ago when I worked for Under Armour and loved the little thing/ UA Record app (very pissed though I have an expensive scale basically useless now). Not until a couple of months ago did I try the Huwai band as it measured jumps/jump height etc obvi useful for basketball and so much more. HOWEVER it only did so for android and I am currently on iOS so I sold it and made a $5 profit. After much shopping around and product comparison and some sales I bought the Garmin vivoactive 3. Was told by garmin reps it tracks basketball... it does not. it also doesn't have pulse oxi etc that vivo4s (small wrists) has so after a month of use I'll be exchanging. I also run (if we wanna call it that) with UA bluetooth enabled shoes and have a smart scale.
Little late to comment but I just bought this and just wanted to know does this have raise to wake? Like if you raise your wrist does it lite up? Cause the suunto 9 does not
Yes it does
Hi. can you install the runtastic application on it? I would like to run it from a watch position. Is it possible?
How did you get that watch face at the 4:19 mark?
Which suntoo model can accept calls?
Does it work well with iPhones?
How is battery life?
Is it better than garmin 5 or ??
Does the suunto7 logo gets imprinted on your wrist after long time using this watch?
Good question... I will check now.
Nope. It does not show any imprinting on my wrist at least. The logo is recessed and the HR sensor protrudes slightly, so I doubt this will be leaving an imprint in anyone's wrist
Lmao, imagine removing the watch and seeing a suunto7. You'll be a brand of suunto from that point. 🤣
Can it be used for triathlon. And does it connect for my earphone/buds?
Not triathlon
How about golf?
Crazy question are you related to Nate O'Brien ?
FYI, its a 50mm watch with a 2 day battery life, or when DC rainmaker mentioned less or about 12 hours. BTW, kinda awkward though, with a four button watch
TestAcc Solutions He said the heart rate monitor was awful too! He pretty much trashed the watch
@@amberbozzelli751 yeap and you know why? its the first suunto watch that is not using the Valencel heart rate monitor, which other Suunto watches are currently using. - Could be the explanation of the lack in accuracy though, but then again, if you want to get the best of the heart rate accuracy, the chest strap is the best way in moving forward
Does it have speaker
No it doesn't have speaker but this is because it can be used for swimming in open waters. Check Suunto website
Yeah. As mentioned below, DC Rainmaker crushed this watch. Not even close to being accurate in the health app and many other issues.
I think that is the nature of the gray area in which this watch lives. I review mostly smartwatches from a daily use standpoint, and Ray (DC Rainmaker) focuses more on sportswatches from a sports and fitness standpoint (I love his reviews and have been subscribed to him for a while). This watch is very capable of tracking workouts for a smartwatch (e.g. try paragliding with the Fossil Gen 5) but perhaps not as capable as a sportswatch, as Ray pointed out in his reviews. Just two perspectives of the same watch. So essentially I think this watch is NOT for the very active people who are looking for the best sports and fitness tracker, but instead might be for someone who likes the Fossil Gen 5 or Fitbit Versa 2, but wishes they had something to track activities while they are non-competitively skiing, trail running, swimming, etc.
@@MikeOBrienMedia Please don't think I was meaning to rubbish your review. Not my intention at all. I value your channel greatly. I just wanted people to see another side of the same coin through another's eyes and opinion. At the cost of this admittedly beautiful smart watch I just thought folk should see a second opinion my friend. Many thanks.
@@DeneF Also remember you can get 2 different results from the same watch. I bought a Garmin Fenix 6x sapphire and my numbers were rubbish. Heart rate would drop to the 80's while playing ice hockey and bike riding. It would tell me my VO2 max was 32 when running and 60 while biking. Needless to say I took it back and found the Vivoactive 4 was much more accurate on my arm. Others swear by the Fenix 6 but I could never get it to measure right for me (tried twice for the record). I have found this watch to have much better optical heart rate as well. Are there features that are disappointing? Yes! But I haven't found the perfect smartwatch activity tracker yet... :(

It's like wearing a hockey puck.
Is It possible To download whatsapp and snapchat on it
Hi
$400 .🙌
Do you know if All Trails and Stepbet apps work on this watch??
Sub+
Cheers Ryan
:0 it has Spotify
Well battery is very important, and its bad
Dude… do you even run or swim 😂
Wear Os straight forward, lol
This is more expensive than my phone :/
Much ?
The watch is pure garbage in every aspect.
* 2 day battery life isn't true. It's much less.
* Worst HR on any Suunto yet. Probably on any recent HR watch period
* GPS REQUIRES, the maps downloads to work accurately (Suunto confirmed this)
* 4 of 5 tops features do not transfer to the Suunto app when synced
* In no way shape or form is this worth a big 500$
* Can NOT use a, external HR sensor
Watch DC Rainmakers review. He gives a 100% honest review. Then absolutely shreds this watch to pieces.
He expects this watch to be a sports watch only. Wear OS attracts lot of people too. Sorry to each their own. This is a very high quality watch
Crap .. battery life
wear os is just crap
*checked the price*... So this thing will brew coffee, do my taxes, and make new a sandwich?....
Lol
I just found one of these in perfect shape
