Im soo new to Suunto..I started with the 9 BARO and fell in love! Initially, i had been debating over the 7 vs the 9 baro, and i admit i made my purchase heavily influenced by the reveiws and opinions of others, however, even with sucky battery life, i decided to buy the 7 to experience the smartwatch features on such a big, quality display. Besides, i bought both off of ebay in "like new" condition for UNDER $180. The 7 has just shipped (sandstone color) and i cant wait to have it in my hands
This is a spot on review of Suunto 7. I had the watch for about 5 months but it wasn't the watch for me so I sold it and got the Polar Grit X. I do team sports (basket ball) so wearing a watch during practice and games isn't an option so I needed a watch that would pair to a BT HR strap with the native sports app to record the activity and to then again sync it to the app. Also sleep and recovery metrics is too basic with this watch. Sleep tracking is only via smart phone (for example using the Sleep as Android app). Otherwise as you said it's an ok daily smartwatch but not for people who look for a serious sports watch.
Doing a great job with these reviews. You are now my go to guy for sport watch content. Keep up the great work. PS I think the next Fenix upgrade will be the best so I’m holding out on a purchase for a little bit longer.
Had it, returned it. What they don't tell you is that the GPS requires the maps downloads to be accurate. It's not just a straight up GPS, as in get signal hit start and go. Confirmed this with Suunto. This after my first two runs were 1 mile and 1 1/2 miles off. The battery sucks too. My personal opinion. Suunto should have never done a Google Wear OS collaboration. They should have just used the UI design/look and come out with an AMOLED screen watch with a decent battery. Would have been perfect.
@@ChaseTheSummit IDK, I think Suunto has kind of lost it's way. Either that or just given up on being a top player in the GPS watch game. It's been years since they came out with a high end GPS watch.
Hello, nice to meet you, I’m roberto from Italy. I love your way to describe with passion all the stuff that you review. Because of you I bought Garmin fenix 6 sapphire 😂😂😂😂 thanks a lot
And PS. The GPS battery realistically isn't even close to 12 hours, LOL. I went on 3 hour runs/trail runs and the battery was sucked down to 50%. And that was from 100% walking out the door. Love your reviews, keep it up!
Yeah I've been seeing the same. The Battery specs are hard to pin down on these Wear OS watches because it really depends on what other stuff you have the watch doing and how often the screen is turning on. Smartwatch first... Fitness watch second.
Job well done picking up the inability to connect HR belts being a software limitation. After a (was it your?) Ticwatch video started suspecting this and you answered this question 😊👍🏻
I got mine as a gift from my son. I have a tiny wrist and I may be weird but I love how big it is. It's a conversation starter for sure because people ask me about my watch. I have the colors of yours and they are perfect for me as a female runner. I agree with you that the battery life is a downside. I need to see if I can recharge it while running with my Anker before my next ultra. Thanks for the review
On 8:01 you mention that it doesn't give notification when you are off route, but it actually has a notification for that. Only thing is that it has a bigger threshold than you might expect so you need to be away from the route about 100 meters to get the notification.
Oh interesting. When I tested it I was probably 100-200 feet off the route and was kind of surprised that it wasn't beeping or yelling at me yet. My Garmin and Coros watches start buzzing after 30-40 feet. Thanks for the tip!
Well.... No. Battery saving mode? That's useless. Only 1 second GPS tracking is ok, everything else is not ok. I was hiking for 3 days in the mountains... Suunto 7 would not survive half of my first day activities... So, it's good for the office, but definitely not for serious sports and adventure..
Thanks for the review. I know this has been old by now, but then it would be more interesting to see how things are evolving in long term… I have used many different sport watches mostly for running. Can you tell in the running workout, how many data fields can it display at the same time in one page? And can you customize it? PS: as far as I know Suunto is not very good at pushing out lots of firmware updates etc., it seems they did make some improvements in the navigation and the mobile app front? But other than that, the watch itself did not get many updates? Looking forward to your reply and other good reviews!
Suunto did actually issue a pretty big firmware update (I posted a video about it) recently which added some features to the Suunto 7. It will be interesting to see if they continue to add or just release a new model in the future.
Some of the issues here have been solved yeah, for instance the mapping function now has both the back home function (if you start moving backwards it automatically reverses the direction of the track and leads you back to where you started) along with notifications for turn by turn navigation and alerts when you go off track. For the heart rate, I noticed suunto 7 works very well for runs, hikes and walks, but for other kinds of exercises like calisthenics and free weights there are a few issues, it tends to underestimate heart rate significantly particularly with stuff like push-ups and pull-ups/rows, and it reacts kinda badly to forward plane arm movements (like doing shadow boxing with resistance band gives you way lower heart rate than actual when you use the non watch hand, and way higher when you use the watch hand).
Awesome job. Man the screen... Load and Recovery: Firstbeat stats? Also - EPOC/Training Effect scores are all? Then - if use Sporty Go - will the workouts flow to App, therefore Load/Recovery? Last - sleep via goodie OS algorithm? Awesome job - you do such a great job w pace and content.
Hey Hunter! I should have mentioned this in the video but the Suunto 7 is one of the only watches that DOESN'T have FirstBeat tech from Suunto. I think this is due to the 7 leveraging the Google Fit ecosystem for wellness data. If you use SportyGo you will not get your activities in Suunto though you could transfer them manually or use a third party sync service. Sleep tracking is based on Google Fit. Thanks for watching!
Chase the Summit great! Should be getting one soon but ugh on the sporty go non-sync issue. Thanks man - you have been killing it w reviews recently - a lot of content. Well done.
Hope your back is feeling better. Looking forward to your S9 baro opinions. Suunto has started discounting the Baro making it rather affordable... Brand may plan new model release, wants to compete with coros, etc.
@@ChaseTheSummit Hi Dave. First of all, thank you very much for your videos. I enjoy a lot watching them. I’d like to know your opinion about Suunto 9 Baro. Could it be a good option for Black Friday sales? I’m waiting for good discounts and choosing one of them: Suunto 9 Baro, Polar Grit X, FR945 or Coros Apex Pro. Greetings from Spain.
I haven’t ever tried Suunto. It’s interesting that they are gravitating towards smart watch features. I wonder if more and more sports watches will go this direction. When the first Apple Watch came out, I figured it was all over for Garmin but I was wrong. I’ve always thought that these watches are either good smart watches with ok fitness features or the opposite. But I wonder if that’s only short term. 🤔
It will be interesting to see how they advance over the next few years. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more and more AMOLED possibly even on Garmin's higher end devices. Thanks for watching Matt!
It actually does warn you if you go off course, but its based on how you set up your route. If you use loads of waypointst he warning comes up fairly quickly as it bases it off the next waypoint. Its not like google maps in that there is a defined route and any straying from it triggers a response, so if your next waypoint is way like a kilometer away, straying 100m off, or going two roads down etc will not trigger it as you can still get to that point. It does mean that for route navigation you have to have a very tight route with lots of waypoints at each turn/regular stages to trigger the off route notification. (sorry bit difficult to explain but hopefully you get the gist). this will also give you regular notifications as you reach each of these waypoints (however no directions and no details of the waypoint - hopefully a future update will fix it so that waypoint label is used). You missed all the summary analysis detail and route comparison detail on the app. Would be great if you did a review comparing the ticwatch Pro3 compared to the Suunto 7.
Hey thanks for the tip. I actually did noticed the off course alert but I had to be WAYYYY off course for it to trigger. In comparison my Garmin, Polar, and Coros devices tend to alert me after 50 feet or so. Even the Suunto 9 has a quicker "off course" alert so I found that kind of weird. I don't think people are interested in creating waypoints for every turn. For instance, some of my courses are 100 miles long. If I had to create a waypoint for every turn it would take days! Sorry for skimping over the summary analysis. If I covered every detail in these videos they'd be an hour long. A comparison to the TicWatch Pro 3 is a great idea! They've got a lot in common with a much different price tag! Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheSummit you will run out of battery first. Doesn't take long to add drop in waypoints. Can pull in and create a 20/30km route in a couple of minutes including waypoints. The routing creation software is really easy to use. They do need to tighten up off route. Think it's due to not tracking track, as long as watch is going on general direction (irrespective of what is in the way), you can still get to waypoints so not off route. Hopefully they will improve in n next update which should include sleep tracking.
True! But it was good to see that other apps actually supported external sensors. Hopefully Suunto sees the complaints and adds it in firmware. Thanks for watching!
I'm curious if you were able to try the Suunto 9 Baro. I'm debating between these 2! I have a good offer to buy any of the 2 but I haven't made up my mind.
I have a Suunto 9 Baro but haven't made a video about it yet. That said, deciding between the two is kind of up to what you need/want. The Suunto 7 is a very intentional smartwatch and the 9 Baro is a straight up sports watch with limited smart features. If you're just looking to track activities the 9 Baro might be the better choice. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the review appreciate the information. I will say being a long time customer of theirs using several different watches their customer support has really gone down hill. Sent several messages threw their new app and waited for over 2 hours before I gave up on my phone call. Just a heads up if that is a importance to some.
Dave, you are becoming famous. You have one dislike. 😂 FR945 seems to be the one for me out of all the watches you have reviewed. Informative video. Thanks.
I found this watch for $375 at Amazon as a “used-like new’’ item. That being said, would you buy Suunto 7 or TicWatch Pro for $300? I couldn’t stomach paying $500 for the Suunto but for this price I can. Thanks as always!
That's a great deal. The Suunto's only advantage is the "suunto" app that's not available on other Wear OS watches. It's pretty powerful with offline mapping, routing, etc... and the ability to tie in with Suunto's app and ecosystem. That said, I think the TicWatch Pro 3 is a better value and since you can download apps like "Sporty Go" from the app store it's powerful enough for most! Hope that helps!
The Fenix is for a totally different market. I'd say the 7 is a better smartwatch but the Fenix is certainly a better fitness/activity tracker. Thanks for watching!
great review and you pointed the principal problem of this watch for me, the battery life and the posibility of connecting it to external devices, that's what made me buy the fenix garmin 6 instead of the suunto 7. Are you going to review also the suunto 9? maybe it can be a direct competitor to the garmin fenix 6?
Yeah it's a littttle on the weak side but it's to be expected for a Smartwatch like this. Even the Apple Watch only goes for 18 hours at the most. The Fenix 6 is a whole different animal and will last MUCH longer. I have the Suunto 9 Baro right now and I'm working on a review for it soon!
I cant wait to try a smartwatch in 5 years :O Now it's almost useless to be honest.. I appreciate the honest review though. I'm expecting a small keyboard integrated somewhere, easy music listening via bluetooth and wireless headphones and phone-free calling and texting also wifi or sim card reader of some kind. It sounds like totally doable. Phone calls with wireless headphones would be a killer thing iin a watch.. What do you think about smart watch perspective in 3-5 years?
Looks like the perfect watch for those that want an alternative to Samsung within the Android ecosystem. I wonder if those shortcomings with chest strap monitor can be firmware patched in?
They are working on firmware updates. The course builder and route features actually just rolled out in a firmware update. I'd like to see more functionality in the future. Thanks for watching!
I am considering the Suunto 7, TicWatch Pro 3, and Vivoactive 4. I am a walker, hiker, and occasional runner. Like a good balance of Smartwatch / Fitness Watch. Which is best in your opinion?
Out of those three my preference would probably be the Ticwatch Pro 3 if I cared more about smartwatch features than fitness. If fitness/activity was the priority the Vivoactive would be my choice. Hope that helps!
Good review! Between this and the new tic watch pro 3, what could you say is better for sports? Because the hardware is almost the same (not the cpu). Battery running with gps is better on the tic watch pro 3? I am thinking about buy the ticwatch for sport and the battery life is important and android system too. Thank you!
@@ChaseTheSummit in your experience, in the review of the ticwatch pro 3, running arround 4 times at week could work without chargin? I mean, battery using gps at one hour how many percentage could be? Thank you for you review
I hesitate to buy between Suunto7 and Tic watch pro3. Actually, I really like Suunto7 more but I just worried about the battery life. Would you please recommend for me? I'm just a office guy who wanna run 10 km almost everyday after work. What should I choose. Thank you ❤❤❤
I think both will do the job. Neither one has "Excellent" battery life. The Ticwatch has a few extra hours. The Suunto 7 has an excellent built in "suunto sports" app that supports mapping. If you prefer the look and feel of the Suunto 7 I'd say go for it. You need to enjoy what you're wearing! Thanks for watching!
Advertised up to "2 days" In my personal experience its been around 1.5-2 depending on use. Venu is a great watch but not really as "smart" as a Wear OS device... That said, it probably does enough for most people! Thanks for watching!
Hi, do you know why I can't track my sleep when I sleep during the daytime? It seems that it works only the night. Thank you for the video! Very good explanation. Moreover do you know how can I set the watch to stop count after 2 km for example? For interval training. Or the only way is manual?
@@ChaseTheSummit You also tested TicWatch 3 Pro. Can you tell any difference in terms of speed, battery longetivity? Because one of them uses SD 3100 and other one uses SD 4100
Atakan there’s not really a noticeable difference in speed but the TicWatch has much better smartwatch battery life of at least 2.5 days. The Suunto seems to have better gps battery life oddly . Thanks for watching.
Polar beat isn't compatible with Wear OS yet. But you could still use it on your phone if you chose to. There are other third party apps for wear OS like "SportyGo" which is really nice. Hope that helps!

@@ChaseTheSummit A good handful of Amazfit watches use AMOLED screens and have pretty lengthy battery these days, but their fitness tracking accuracy has taken a hit since I got my Pace back in 2017 (GTS and GTR have terrible GPS tracking for some reason). Hopeful Suunto makes a watch with a nice screen/these fitness features without relying on Wear OS. Just don't see enough value in the OS right now especially when looking at this specifically as a fitness watch. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it weren't for having to charge it frequently for features I wont even use.
There's such a divide between "Smart watch" and "Fitness Watch" these days. Seems like no one can bridge the gap. It's either crazy good battery life with limited smarts, or lots of smarts with limited battery life. Thanks again dude!
With a 3100 snapdragon this watch doesn't deserve 480 euro.Is super overpriced doesn't matter how beautiful he is.Using that 4 years old processor you won't hit more then 1 day battery life.
In terms of "speed" I don't feel any lag with the Suunto 7 compared to the Snapdragon 4100 in my Ticwatch Pro 3 but yeah... battery life isn't great on the 7. Thanks for watching!
I’ve never understood the importance of battery life on smart watches. I charge my Apple Watch every night and it doesn’t take a whole lot. I used to have a TicWatch Pro Wear OS and same thing. I know I’m in the minority but battery life is overrated imo.
Different tools for different jobs! Battery life is great for long expeditions, hikes, being off grid for extended periods of time and of course for tracking really long events like Ironman or Ultra Marathons. For regular smart watch stuff 24 hours is fine! Thanks for watching.
Chase the Summit agree 100%, but I think most of the every day users complain about it which like you said, 24 hours is fine. Other channels complain as well, but I’m almost certain they are not Ironman or ultra marathon athletes. Just started following and appreciate this review.
@@ChaseTheSummit awesome! Thanks
Great honest overview. Still not enough for me to leave my Garmin Fenix 5.
The Fenix is for a totally different market. I'd say the 7 is a better smartwatch but the Fenix is certainly a better fitness/activity tracker. Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheSummit agreed. I had a smart watch and couldn't stand getting all the notifications that I stopped linking it to my phone. Lol
great review and you pointed the principal problem of this watch for me, the battery life and the posibility of connecting it to external devices, that's what made me buy the fenix garmin 6 instead of the suunto 7.
Você recomendaria o Suunto 9 para treinos e uso diário?
What if you/I were to use two Suunto watches? One for daily stuff and one for workouts? Could you connect two watches to the same profile/app?
Unfortunately the app only supports one device at a time.
@@ChaseTheSummit that sucks
I cant wait to try a smartwatch in 5 years :O Now it's almost useless to be honest.. I appreciate the honest review though.
I'm expecting a small keyboard integrated somewhere, easy music listening via bluetooth and wireless headphones and phone-free calling and texting also wifi or sim card reader of some kind. It sounds like totally doable. Phone calls with wireless headphones would be a killer thing iin a watch.. What do you think about smart watch perspective in 3-5 years?
Most of those features already exist in the Apple Watch Series 6 with LTE. Hard to say what we'll have in 3-5 years! Technology moves so fast.
Thank you!
Standby battery is better on the Ticwatch but oddly GPS battery seems better on the Suunto 7. They’re pretty similar in this regard. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit in your experience, in the review of the ticwatch pro 3, running arround 4 times at week could work without chargin? I mean, battery using gps at one hour how many percentage could be? Thank you for you review
Thanks for video, I noticed you paired it with an iPhone. Does it work well and do you get all the features ?
It works the same on both Android and IOS. There's really not much of a difference.
@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks for your recommendation. ❤❤❤
Suunto 7 battery life is circa 48 hours - that said, the VENU last you for 5 days
Unfortunately the Suunto 7 doesn't track naps. Most of the competition doesn't either.
@@ChaseTheSummit thank you! That's a big problem for me hahaha because I work at night 😅
For a heavylight sport, this Will be a good choise? Or maybe a garmin o fitbit? Thanks
Hmmm... What's a "HeavyLight" sport?
Hi Dave, great vid. Can you do a Coros Apex v Garmin 245 review?
Thanks for watching! I don't have a 245 on hand but that would be a good comparison!
@@ChaseTheSummit What strap do you use for your 945 mate? Think its a grey one.
Had the suunto 9 and loved the watch... but the companion app is just rubbish. Changed the watch for a Fenix 5 and I LOVE Garmin Connect
Glad to hear you found something that worked! Thanks for watching!
The heatmap watchface is the only win on the 7 for me. It's like an Android version of Apple watch battery wise lol.
Hah yeah I really like that watchface as well. I do get a bit more battery life from the 7 than I do with my Apple Watch. Thanks for watching.
in this review you have suunto 9 baro too, will you make a video about this watch?
Eventually. Priorities tend to shift to newer devices but I am working on something. Thanks for watching!
Did you get to keep compass and earbuds? You had to return the watch?
This was a loaner unit that I'll eventually need to send back. Thanks for watching!
Hi , Do Suunto 7 has continuous heart rate measurement , stress -resource like the sunnto 9? Thanks !
Yes it does
Chase the Summit Thanks!
can you turn notifications off on this watch? to save battery? idc about having notifications on my wrist haha
Yup, you can also turn off bluetooth if you want to save even more battery so it's not constantly connected to your phone.
Do you know how to enable 'auto' mode. So when you stop while cycling the timer automatically stop
To the best of my knowledge I don't think the Suunto 7 has an auto-pause feature.
@@ChaseTheSummit thank you so much
The beard looks dope 👌
Thanks! Maybe I should grow it back 🤔
What can you say about HRM accuracy. I think it is better than TicWatch 3 Pro.
Pretty good in my testing so far. I know others have gotten bad results but that hasn’t been my experience!
Man, that's a perfect watch!!! I really want that!!!!
Are you teasing?! It is actually really cool to use! I just wish there were a few things that could make it a perfect Iphone alternative.
Pro: It's an Android Wear watch for runners and cyclists.
Con: it's an Android Wear watch
😂
Can you download a golf app from the playstore to use will golfing for distance to the front, middle and back of green, hazards etc?
If it's available for Wear OS it should work on the Suunto 7
Awesome thanks so much. Great video.
What if the user decides to use a 3rth party app for training i.e. polar beat
Polar beat isn't compatible with Wear OS yet. But you could still use it on your phone if you chose to. There are other third party apps for wear OS like "SportyGo" which is really nice. Hope that helps!
Looked at this
But passed don't need smart smart watch
Looked Suunto 9
Had ambit 3
Jumped ship to fenix 6x
How do you like the Fenix 6?
@@ChaseTheSummit hiya, love it. I keep it on right wrist 24/7 pretty much. If you have time or inclination sub me back, I've put one video up on it plus more to follow :)
Its very comfy plus great to change straps :)
Can someone please help me with a watch with a freaking surfing app/workout/exercise except the apple watch. If done research for weeks now
A lot of good watches ( garmin, suunto, fossil, Samsung etc) but no one speakes about surfing I can't even find information.
Someone please help me with some info
There's a Garmin Instinct Solar specifically designed for surfers actually (the one with the blue band). Maybe check that out?
great review to help me remove this watch from my watched list :)
It's a niche product. Seems like it's perfect for the right person but not for everybody. Thanks for watching!
Nice, now i know to ditch that suunto :) good review!
It depends what you're doing with it. It's a pretty cool smartwatch but I think there are better options for fitness.
@@ChaseTheSummit I’m just looking totally for something casual with time to time options for running. Huashi watch gt2 pro is for this time best option for me from what I’ve read and watched all over CZcams based on many reviews including all reviews you’ve made about many different watches !:)
But I’m waiting for amazfit gts 2
Interesting watch only if it has better battery life 😢
It's a tough balance. Battery life vs features vs bright vibrant AMOLED screen. Pick two haha. Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheSummit I will pick AMOLED display and battery life with alot of features 😁😁
Can people use facebook or snapchat here? And headphones?
Facebook has a Wear OS app but I don't think Snapchat does. Yes you can pair headphones to the watch.
I wish I could afford this
#best watch
It's a nice one!
$500 for a watch without great battery life? What's the demographic here? Great review as always!
@@ChaseTheSummit i just think is to expensive for his specs and for what he can do beside others...
I have this watch, my Fenix 6 is way better
Man, that the perfect watch. I want...... Just kidding!
So close!
Wear OS?! Dafuq. No thanks. Battery life on Wear OS smartwatches is absolutely unusable short.
Been wanting to see if this is a watch I can get behind. I’m an android user , but not sure I can get behind the $500 price tag
