There's a new hatchback on the market and for the first time in decades it carries the Corolla nameplate. It's all a bit confusing but just before the launch of the new Auris, Toyota (globally) did a 180 and changed the car's name to the Corolla Hatch.
Toyota hatchbacks have quite a following in South Africa. Those wearing the RSi badge were much loved and even the RunX, which predated the Auris, found many homes.
This new hatch however is a thoroughly different product and we were first to get our hands on one in SA. Join Ciro De Siena as he takes a thorough look at the car, and discusses the upcoming sportier versions which will no doubt hit showroom floors in due course.

Test drove one a few weeks ago. I was shocked at how good it is. The quietness and ride comfort. CVT is actually bearable as it imitates an auto. Good engine. Would I buy one, maybe. Would I keep it if I won one, for sure.

I recently ordered mine. But since I'm in Europe, mine is a 2.0l Hybrid with 180hp and adjustable suspension. It also has nav and full phone connectivity and Mirrorlink though still no CarPlay or AndroidAuto. Does have Qi charging as well and full park assist/automatic parking. It also as a speedometer with 3D effects instead of the normal digital display. Just to name a few things you apparently don't have 😁.

I just scanned the latest issue of the British magazine CAR and out of 5 cars....the Corolla hatch was LAST. One of the key factors in its poor showing was the lack of equipment that other manufacturers included so that the price was a bit out of line with its competitors.
Other cars tested included the Ford Focus, VW Golf, Mazda3, and Skoda Scala.

For the upgraded versions please enlarge the boot, park distance control, android Auto and Apple car play is a must. I don't want to even get started with the exorbitant pricing...but would not mind paying that much if the above were taken care of, lets wait for the bigger better versions #Letsmaketoyotacorrollafashionableandyouthful

  • @SDav21
    @SDav21 Před 5 lety +1

Having test driven this, I was actually surprised by the interior quality and solidity. Very different to the plastic nonsense they usually spew out. The reverse camera however is shockingly low quality with a grainy image it is basically unusable. The road noise is a bit high and I did not like the gearbox at all. It drones and makes the power delivery weird making it appear sluggish. A well engineered and well sorted normal torque converter automatic like those from Mazda would have been so much better. Toyota just took the easy way out here using a rubbish CVT. Having also driven a Peugeot with a 1.2 turbo and normal automatic with similar power and torque to the Toyota 1.2 turbo with CVT, the Peugeot feels and performs light years better. Other than that it is an okay car. Interior quality is much improved but for Toyota that is not saying much.

      That's a massive lie....
My second car is a auris 2014, nowhere near the perfection on driving with the Corolla!
The Corolla you are driving it at 230 km/h. And absolutely no shaking, and no noise,
Auris you gonna have your ears bleeding, and the movement of the car nowhere near as solid as the corolla, the way the corolla turns in corners not only its allot faster than the auris, it is way more planted but not only that you can experience lift off oversteer, it's absolutely neutral balanced, if you make it understeer with the esp it interferes with the best way! Apply rear brakes and it makes it feel like a rwd 150 hp bmw 1 series 2016,
Don't comment stuff badly just because you can't aford it

Hi guys... So I've been in the market for year now. Looking for a decent car for about R350k. Recently married so need the space of family car. I'm currently driving an 07 Fiesta which I've put 190k kms on. Trouble is that with all the cars market nothing really seems value for money anymore. Perhaps because I haven't kept up to date with car prices for a few years.
My options recently were as follows. Honda HRV- nice looking crossover with Honda reliability but terribly loud CVT. Tuscon and Tiguan I like but both over my budget. Also base models are terrible for R420.
Was banking on this Carolla as am alternative to a crossover but not interested anymore.
The 2019 focus has gotten great reviews in UK and looks handsome in St line trim. Problem is that Ford is the biggest losers at the moment regarding reliability. Last option for this year could be the t cross. Might be too small though. Will have to see in the metal.
Otherwise will have to wait for the golf 8 next year.
Any opinions would be welcome our Anyone in the same predicament feel free to contact me via WhatsApp 0784433633 to share ideas.

For almost R100 000 less I can buy a Corsa that also pushes 85kw and has all the features missing in the Toyota.

No phone connectivity! No sat Nav? yeah... go market this at the old age home

    • @tdmap2241

In case you are not aware sat nav is an option item in many “expensive” brands. Those should also be marketed at old age home as per your line of thinking

Buy a Mégane if you want sat nav as standard, because Golf's nav is an optional extra

This guy is a good journalist but a bit too dull for my liking as compared to Matt Watson of Cawow UK. The latter is full of energy, fun, very humourous but then very informative in one package. Hope our reviewers can learn a thing or two from him.

for that price, the polo/golf is a much better buy AND AN EVEN BETTER buy is the new vivo which is the old polo....

I would never buy a car that doesn't have features as standard like most of VW models has OPTIONAL features that is not standard

The rear looks like the 4th generation Mazda 3 hatch..... the price for the entry level is stupidly high... the new Mazda 3 will shut this down with its range.

    Dear South Africans
350k plus for a vehicle is a lot of money so why not consider a Toyota Etios or a VW Polo Vivo both below 200k entry level and have bigger engines.
    Kind regards
    Your friendly advisor

    • @releM15
      @releM15 Před 5 lety

Such bad advice... the vw is a safety risk, high risk of theft... the Etios is not so safe in terms of safety itself, very light, unbalanced and only has 2 airbags...

      Dear so called adviser
You can't tell people what to buy or not to buy. If they want this car then is their right to do it and is their money, it doesn't matter how it costs
      Thank you

"Quiet"?? When compared to what though? I found the road noise a bit high. Toyota needs to step it up on the tech side. Imagine the current, now 7 year old, Golf has better technology and the Toyota is all new. It will be completely annihilated once the Golf 8 arrives. Toyota has never really managed to stay competitive in any segment. They start designing their new models where the competitors are currently at rather than designing it for when it comes out after development meaning they are always behind right from launch.

You poor buggers in SA get ripped off . The Corolla starts from R250 000 in Australia with the same specs but we get satnav and we also get the new toyota 2.0L 125 kw 200Nm engine as standard , not that wheezy 1.2l turbo unit . Plus emergency city braking as standard too .

If they could bring back the RSI version, full spec...if only...I would choose that over the germans...Toyota just dissapoints...
