The Eurovision Song Contest 1968 was the 13th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in London, United Kingdom, following the country's victory at the 1967 contest with the song "Puppet on a String" by Sandie Shaw. It was the third time the United Kingdom hosted the competition, having previously done so in 1960 and 1963, both of which also took place in London. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the contest was held at Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 6 April 1968, and was hosted by Katie Boyle for the third time. It was the first time that the contest was broadcast in colour.
Seventeen countries participated in the contest. The same countries that participated the previous year.
The winner was Spain with the song "La, la, la" by Massiel, and written/composed by Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa. This was Spain's first victory - and their first ever top five placing - in the contest. This was also first victory for the country from the Iberian Peninsula. With her winning reprise, she became the first winner to perform part of her song in English, in addition to the original version. Prior to the contest, the United Kingdom's entry, the song "Congratulations" by Cliff Richard, was hotly tipped as the favourite to win, but lost out to Spain's by a margin of just one point.

I Love Massiel, Spain, 1968,💖
I think Spain deserved to win, I love that song very much 💖
Yeah because it's great
@@oliverjihan6732 I like it but its too repetitive
Belgium is underrated as always, one of the most beautiful entries in eurovision EVER imo.
YES, one of my favourite ESC songs ever as well! It's just outstanding, magical and absolutely timeless. The outstanding spell it has can't be described in words.
I don't guess
Pretty true
I don't really see how people actually like the song, however, I do believe your point is right (2006 was an absolute robbery)
Good to know that I'm not the only one who like the Finnish entry.
Grew up hearing Cliff Richard since my mom loooved his music 🎶 So hearing him always puts a big smile on my face. ❤
My top 5
1 Spain
2 Belgium
3 Portugal
4 Germany
5 🇳🇱
My top 3 is France, Ireland and Spain, so yeah, we have really different tastes hahahah. Great video
So many good ones this year. Not a bad one at all amongst the lot. Great mixed bag of styles. My faves are Mr Orange there, all set for colour in 1968, France was nice. The haunting Belgian entry, Germany (nice twirl there with the mic, Wencke), Marianne is beautiful with the orchestra, Jeel a dang-dag is right up there and the very polished Finnish entry is excellent. 1 vote? The judges want to have a word with themselves. Last and not least it's that cracking Yay, dang-dang effort to end what I think is an absolute corker of a year. No offense to any I didn't mention. Such a strong contest - all worthy of praise.
Sweden is my number 1 of this contest. The song is so great, uplifting, full of good vibes and the language is just beautiful, banne mej!
Earlier than Farid Gasimov
Maybe because I have no clue about 1968 😂😂
@@Vasil.Kostadinov_official lol😂
hot take: stress is better than odd børre’s disqualified plagarized song
No. The "plagiarized" song is a beautiful masterpiece. Stress on the other hand is very annoying.
Never been keen on the old years, but Portugal is an underrated gem ❤
I don't think we deserved last place that year. Ronnie Tober is a really good singer
But his voice is very annoying
No, you didn't deserve last place at all. Ok, Ronnie "knew where the camera was" a bit too much, and the song is a tad repetitive, but top 5 easily.
Have you considered making top countdowns for all of the songs different countries brought? Like "My Top X Swedish entries"
Spain 😍 Germany 😍
1. Spain
2. United Kingdom
3. Finland
4. Germany
5. Italy
My top 3 is
1. Germany
2. Yugoslavia
3. Spain
My favourite of this year is Finland.
A very strong ESC year. For me, Yugoslavia is the winner. But there's not a single song that I dislike.
Thank you for appreciating underrated Switzerland, Austria and MOnaco.
Although I personally think Luxembourg was the worst, because at least France had a message hidden there. The lack of chemistry (they obviously hate each other and the song) between the 2 irritates me
Chris himself said that although they were quite good friends, they had no sexual chemistry whatsoever. So, that's your answer.
Sweden is underrated. My winner.
It’s always fun to see different tastes. Your number 17, is my number one. I live Isabelle’s entry❤️
spain was a deserved winner!!
1.Yugoslavia 2. Cliff Richards 3. France (did you hear the instrumental version of this song that Paul Mauriat orchestra covered "Le source" ? It swept me off my feet.)
My winner is Norway.💙🇳🇴Such a classy song for the late '60

Well, i give sir Cliff 12 points! Congratulations!
Does anyone know the cause of Hamo Hajdarhodžić's death?
It's a bit of a morbid question, but I found it interesting that there are data on the death and causes of death of Đel Jusić, Marko Brešković and Oliver Dragojević, but not Hamo, who was a singer and guitarist of the Dubrovacki Trubaduri for the first few years since the formation of the band, according to consulted sources, he died in 2003, but it is not specified from what, so I would be grateful if someone could share the information, if there is any. And again, I'm sorry if that's a morbid question
Would the meaning of the lyrics behind la source make it worse or better?
Lala la is repetitive AND CONCRATULATIONS isn't?
At least Congratulations doesn’t just repeat one word in its chorus!
Yes
It's all a matter of opinions i suppose but sometimes you wonder how people think. They find a repetitive song better than another....... repetitive song. And the Jugoslavian ENTRY WHO you placed 4th is also repetitive.Catchy but repetitive nevertheless
@@JeSuisRene and what's wrong with that? im sure you’re the kind of person who criticizes Lena's 2010 song because of its lyrics
@@pukuwu6218 Germany were my personal winners in 2010.
my favourite of this year is yugoslavia
tal vez ganò España en ese año porque se venian cambios para el mundo y ella grita al universo los sentires de muchos, e ese entonces, lo que venìa y lo que se dejaba atras
Cliff the best
Lucas, please add comments to your other tops.
Very interesting to read your ranking. I must confess: I´ve never loved "Ein Hoch der Liebe". When I was 10 years old, it was in 1968, I heard it first time after the song contest. And I was very disapointed, because it was a total other song as the hits from Wencke I` ve known.
I love "Lalala" and "Chance of a lifetime" ."La source" is very boring for me , too.

Wow, I'm shocked! After 1999 I expected the worst, not gonna lie. But this time I enjoy your top. My winner, Belgium, is not last at least, and Spain YES, one of my most hated songs ever in the ESC. I don't agree with Italy and UK (just according to the placings, I like so many songs in that year either) at all, but that's it. Good one!
And dankeschön for the first place. Indeed Wencke did a great job, I really like her and the song.
Undeserved win from spain, chance of a lifetime - congratulations were better suited to win.
Agree with you, La la la was sooo overrated, i don’t really like it
Well, I thought it was wonderful! Happy music and lyrics full of optimism.
Great singers, bad songs
I also think lalalalala is repetitive
Agreed👍
Well, being repetitive, it had to have been exceptional to win. Sorry, I really liked it.
