As you can probably imagine, A LOT of footage got left on the editing room floor. That being said, I don't want all this to go to waste, so check out the Patreon to see all the footage from the night in a full, uncut, 40 minute video: www.patreon.com/posts/tony-night-uncut-84627869
Either Amanda is the best business friend you have, or it's her plot to BANKRUPT ALL OTHER CZcamsRS through peer pressure. Either way, you got to go to the Tonys!
The fact that you and Swell Entertainment are friends is the real life crossover I never knew I needed.
I can't believe that 4 years ago, this little up and coming CZcamsr and I start planning a video about The Producers; and now you got to sit in the same room where Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick presented an award together.
I hate you.
But I'm happy for you.
But I hate you.
But I'm so unbelievably proud of you for getting to this point! It never ceases to amaze me.
Taking this opportunity to give us a behind the scenes look at how the awards ceremony plays out aside form what you see on camera was very fascinating and was worth all the sweating.
My partner & I squealed when they came out together. My Disnerd was like, Timon & Simba! 🦁
I went to Some Like It Hot on their first show back after the Tonys. J. Harrison Ghee brought their Tony on stage in the middle of Act 2 and got a 5-minute standing ovation, it was incredible
I had no idea the New York theatre scene was so chill. It was cool to see how people were socializing with each other. I always thought the atmosphere would be more competitive and snooty. Thanks for taking us with you.
Yes to the Tony Playbills being thick - I grew up in CT and my sister worked at a restaurant in Hartford and one of her fave regular customers went to the Tonys one year and gave me his Playbill the next time he came by, knowing how much I loved theatre - it's like an actual mini book!
That’s so kind and awesome!
I love both your channel and Amanda's channel, so the fact that the broadway historian and the event reviewer are BOTH doing tony awards coverage is so exciting! It's so cool that everyone just mingles, whether they're a nominee or an audience member. Great video and I loved seeing the behind the scenes
Someone really needs to remake The Movies because that was a great game
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
not the betterhelp sponsorship in 2023...
I know. So problematic. But I guess Brendan and the others do need an income. Just wish they’d do a little bit of research into them first.
The program was a million times better without the scripted bs that hosts and presenters wasted time with. I love writers and am fully in support of the WGA, but this year's show was so great, they should continue to have no scripts. Were there a few awkward ad libs? Sure, but they passed by quickly. Ms. Dubose's danced opening number was fabulous. Period. Having extra time to show clips of the nominated plays, plus clips AND live numbers from the musicals was fantastic. The only things that were misguided were relegating the Lifetime Achievement Awards for Joel Gray and the beloved John Kander to a walk-on and wave during the main broadcast show (after seeing their full presentations and wonderful acceptance speeches in the "Act One" portion on Pluto TV. That was shameful. We did not need to see HOT HONEY RAG danced yet again - even by two great dancers - instead of seeing and hearing Kander and Gray's awards. And cutting off PARADE composer Jason Robert Brown’s speech just to give us yet another video montage about the closing of PHANTOM was terrible. Other than those few bad choices it was a tremendously good show this year. Keep it up... no scripts from bow on!
...from NOW on...
100% agree about the Lifetime Achievement Awards. Joel Gray and John Kander deserved so much better! As did the tv audience!
They showed it in the preshow
@@user-gv9vm9fg2c I know that, but is should have been shown in the prime time show. These legends deserved that. Pathetic.
@@carlbaldasso ...these eyes will not be blinded by the lights! 😃
Cannot believe that huge YT theatre channels like you/Mickey Joe aren’t invited to these events considering the influence you both have online! Hope they invite you next year instead of you fishing for tickets hahahuhu But 💯 love that you got in this year!
Watching this, I've now remembered why J. Harrison Ghee's name sounded so familiar. I saw them as Lola in Kinky Boots six years ago!!! And at the same time Brendon Urie was playing Charlie and Taylor Louderman as Lauren!!! Really realizing how lucky I was to see that cast
Now I need to find the slime tutorial with that cast 😁
I love Amanda. Glad she pressured you to go!
Gonna pretend I didn't see that Playbill pile LOL
Agree that the non scripted Tonys was more authentic. My favorite part of the non scripted show was the focus on the snippets of the performances. Since time is apparently the reason why the show usually doesn’t show snippets/clips is because of the presenters/banter, I rather have the show clips. I hope next year’s ceremony is less scripted. Support the writers but still wish for the repeat genuine vibe and the spotlight on the Broadway shows - snippets to promote the nominated work. The opening number was such a pleasant and fantastic surprise!
To be clear--this Tony's wasn't "non-scripted" it was simply written without Union labor. Every moment was still meticulously planned and pre-written, it was just done by people breaking a picket line.
Ahhhh, I LOVED this video! First time I've ever seen an "inside the Tony's" vlog. I guess I may be ever so slightly older than you... I remember watching back in the early 90's the night after, and even recording it on a (shock, horror, gasp) VHS cassette... which I still have. Who needs a duster when one had cassettes??
Love your vlogs! Thanks for being real!
I can attest that the air conditioners were not broken! Ironically, center balcony last row was the place to be, right under a nice cooling A/C unit.
One thing I will say for having writers though, is that I like when they give context for the musical numbers. Because not everyone has seen every show and the performance itself may not have context for what's going on in the plot (*cough* & Juliet *cough*), which makes it hard to connect with what's going on. The intro videos helped, but I don't know if it was enough. Plus, a traditional opening number would have been more onstage, so the people in the theater would have gotten to enjoy it more. But yeah, perhaps loosening up and letting more parts go unscripted would help next year?
You and Swell were there?! I wish I saw you! This was my first time going, and as a Broadway producer at that!
Was hoping Shucked would get at least Best Book. But if they were to only get one award, I am so glad that it went to Alex! Their speech makes me cry every time I see it.
My old drama teacher got a ticket to the Tonys this year, I'm going to spend most of this vid just trying to spot him in the audience
I used to work at a major Hollywood awards show and it's so freaking weird. It looks so different from the red carpet, it's like it's lined with all these shoebox dioramas, but each of them is a different media outlet that the performers step up into. Being on the carpet it terrifying, because it's all these photographers screaming people's names to get their attention, and you're just trying not to step on a camera cable or the train of peoples' dresses. It was 8 hours on my feet with no time to stop and eat, sealed into 2 layers of spanx and an evening gown from TJ Maxx, but I'm glad I did it because it's a unique experience most people don't get.
I loved how unabashedly queer this show was, not just in the amount of queer artists who won this year, but the general attitude. Micheal Arden was right in focusing how speech on the trans community becayse they are the ones who helped this theatre community get to where it was. I mean it when i say that the community that creates theatre would not be talented if it wasn’t for the queer people in the field and the trans community were some of the most outspoken for those rights in queer history.
It was important to have the entire event just get so incredible to be able to see the Tonys send such a public message of “there may be people tearing the community down but there is an entire room of queer folks and allies that create what you love and are going to be loud aobut it.” I think people massively understate showing the average public how many queer folk are in the spaces they love can “wake” them up to how important caring about the community is.
Watching your video reminds me of how old and cynical I've become. Seeing such genuine enthusiasm and love for the subject is a treat. Thanks. You deserved to have this experience, your videos are always great. Please, don't ever become jaded about this sort of thing.
Honestly Amanda needs to be put on payroll as your financial advisor because she is so so right this is a great move for you. Of course you should go its the TONYS!!!!
Was any food available for purchase? If not, I hope you ate something before the show and/or something after. I loved my visit to The Drama Book Shop and can’t wait to return! I heard that Lin Manuel Miranda often frequents the shop. 😎
Sorry not sorry - I know this is my third post but I can’t help it, the Tony Awards is like Christmas to me ❤️🥳
When i saw the stack of tonys playbills i GASPED SO LOUD and i want oneee
JGH's blue dress seen against all that red and gold of the theatre... FABULOUS! STUNNING!! GORGEOUS!!! A well-deserved win (Alex, too.)
You and Swell Entertainment?! My CZcams worlds are colliding.
I adore the drama bookshop!! Also I'm so happy swell convinced you to go! The tony's is such a big step to being taken seriously as a theater critic by the professionals! I consider your content professional, well researched, and speaks on behalf of well versed theater going audience members. I hope this leads to bigger opportunities for you, because people who use CZcams as a platform for their writing are JUST as legitimate and more with the times than print critics. I'd love to have one of those playbills for my collection when a giveaway comes up!
I learned about your channel through Swell Entertainment, and I'm so glad I did!
Welcome to the party!!
Wishful thinking: Sitting here with my heart pounding waiting in the wings for you ....(pun intended duh) to utter the sentence "and then I ran into King Lin Manuel and he agreed to do a sit down interview for the channel"
You definitely made the right choice in going! Love to see this Swell Entertainment crossover. This might be the only place on the internet where I can ask, "does anyone else think Amanda looks a little like Julia Murney?" and there will be at least a few people who know who they both are.
I'm new to this channel. What is the Rachel Chavkin story? Is there a video covering this?
I wanna know too
I came to the comments looking for the answer to this too!
Me three. What’s the goss? I hope she was nice, because I just adore Hadestown, though I doubt it will ever make it down to Australia
Same what happened, haven't heard a story on this before.
I think unscripted worked so well for the Tony Awards because Broadway actors are used to having to recover live whenever there's a hiccup onstage. There's no reshoot: the show must go on.
wait in the wings and swell!!! my worlds are colliding
I like the Costco - Tony peeps analogy. 👍 I’d do the same! So glad you caved and attended AND you shared your inside ticket with us! 🙏🥰
You need to see & Juliet!!! It’s a wonderful show! I had so much fun seeing it live and the cast is amazing. It’s joyous and inclusive and the songs are all bangers! Give yourself that gift while the original cast is there.
My sister's NYU MS graduation was at the united palace a few months before the tony's, and it was filled to capacity.
Tony Awards is one of the few televised awards shows with a CASH BAR!
im shook by the swell wait in the wings crossover omg
I was an associate producer at the Tony Awards several years ago - it was so much fun and all the nominees and guest talent were incredibly kind; no one was a diva, everyone was happy to chat. It was a terrible experience.
I had no idea you were friends Amanda! Makes sense though, the more I think about it.
Beautiful theatre! Glad you got to experience The Tony's up close and personal.
Thanks for doing this. But besides the lack of A/C, what about the theater? It looked stunning!
There were so many moments in this video when it could have veered into a bit of a cringe feeling and you managed to avoid them all. What a lovely, genuine, interesting look at the Tony Awards. Thanks for making the choice to spend a bit for a cool adventure.
So glad Amanda got you to go! Its so cool to see the behind the scenes
Love your coverage. Thank you for sharing ❤
I loved “A Christmas Carol”!! I saw it 3x when it premiered at the Geffen Playhouse in LA in 2018. Sooo happy that Michael Arden is who directed A Christmas Carol won for directing “Parade” . And yes his acceptance speech #✊🏼
My good friend Vi made that infographic of Broadway by the Numbers!!
Really enjoyed seeing your experience, and it's always fun to see crossovers with other CZcamsrs I subscribe to and had no idea you knew each other!
Yeah, you’ll never regret going to this; Amanda did you a solid! Even if you go to future Tonys (which I’m sure you will) you’ll never forget your first time ☺️
One of the few times that I’ll say it’s worth the credit card debt 😅
Thank you for this video!!
Thank you so much for this video!!! This year was my first time watching the Tony’s and it truly is very interesting to see your reaction too. I wish I could be there some day haha.
(PS: were you at Hadestown last Friday? Because I thought I saw you. I literally screamed to my friend lolll)
Absolutely Adored This! Wow! Amazing Footage!
You deserve this experience so much!!! So happy that you got to go!!! Thank you Amanda hahahahaha
Love this behind the scenes look!
Back in 2018 i was in nyc same time as the tonys and it was so fun just to be in nyc at that time. i got to walk by radio city when it was red carpet time so it was crazy busy and then i got takeaway and watched it in my hotel room so i cant imagine how fun and exciting it would be in the actual room. The playbills look so cool ahh i want one.
I've gone to the Tony's 3 times. 1994 2001 and 2004. The first time it was at the Gershwin. The other 2 times it qas at Radio City. I sprung for the after Party. First 2 times it was in the ballroom at the Marriott Marquis. The last time it was at Rockafeller Center.r
I almost went last year. I figured out how to buy tickets and found one that wasn't horrible. I couldn't make my work schedule work though. This year, I couldn't figure out how to buy them. :(
@@browneyes142a I got mine just by calling the Antaenette perry offices.
...I saw the title and immediately thought of Swell, and laughed when you mentioned Amanda.
love the swell entertainment shoutout!!!!
Oh lord this is so exciting!!!
I'm only two minutes into the video and you're already making a Tony the Tiger joke.
omg i was about to watch one of your videos and then saw you posted this 30 seconds ago lmao
you and swell entertainment meeting is my avengers endgame
I did not expect a The Movies reference but it is truly appreciated (God they need to re-release/remake that title or something like it!)
Did anyone fan out about you and swell because I definitely would’ve lmaoooo
Came over from Swell's channel, and immediately subscribed once I found you were also a pro wrestling fan! I'm so happy that there is more of us Broadway/Wrestling fans out in the wild 🎉
This is just my opinion but i vastly prefer the medley performances vs just one song or moment, i want to get a feel for a show at the tonys if possible and one song never feels like enough
“The buttah song” 😂
That was delightful! Thank you!
I just signed up to be a Patreon patron, in hopes that you can recoup a little bit more money towards that expensive ticket. It was totally worth it. I love this video so much.
The show was fantastic! ❤so happy you got to go!
My friends and I did predictions this year, they owe me so many playbill earrings
Loving all of the wrestling references because I know exactly what you mean!
Of course Swell was involved! Of course she was! 😂😂
OMG I used to play the movies with my sibilings. It was so much fun.
Omg I’m so excited for swell’s video too
I'm so happy two of my favourite creators are friends
This is so cool, thank you so much for paying that expensive ass ticket to get us to get a glimpse of what it’s like inside lol
That was the exact reaction I had to the Best Musical win.
OMG, I had "The Movies" computer game when I was a kid! Whew, there's a nostalgia trip! 😅
I heard of these awards but have no idea what they are?
What a blast it must’ve been. Sometimes you just have to go for it. Do you know you’d be really pissed with yourself if you had not gone. Way back in 1978. I bullshitted my way into a ticket to the Oscars. It was a comparable experience, but in film terms. I doubt it’s the same now, but I walked in on the red carpet with everyone else. [the only way into the auditorium] and when it was over every movie star in Hollywood was just in the lobby or out front waiting for their cars! It was pretty amazing. Security being what it is now I imagine it’s not like this anymore. Thanks for sharing your joy with us.
I think it's awesome Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick announced an award. I love The Producers! I used to be the king, the king of old Broadway! I might just try to make the Tony Awards some day!
I thought that this year was one of the best I have seen. Lot of good representation that I haven't seen in a while
Every time you do something cool like this I’m just so happy for you! Looking forward to all things Shucked.
Saw J. Harrison Ghee play Velma Kelly in Chicago last summer. I love this for them.
I'm so happy for Alex, I'm tearing up
I absolutely LOVED The Movies game when I was a kid lol.
Wow. I'm so sad I missed the live show because my internet was down. :(
You’re adorable! And very funny. The world needs people like you!
Good for you Brendon!!!!! You should thank Amanda for peer pressuring you!!!
Sometimes you need friends to bully you in to things and you thank them later!

I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE FRIENDS WITH AMANDA
I love this discovery it makes so much sense
I get to see a musical on broadway (technically off broadway) for the first time next week and I can’t wait!
Hope you enjoy it! Which show?!

@@karenz3853omg you’re going to have SUCH a good time! the current cast are standouts (& if you’re going to ahem audio/visual bootleg it, i will literally pay you for a copy bc it was sooo good)
I remember watching CallMeKevin playing The Movies game and being so chaotic. It seemed like a pretty fun game!
What happen during the “I Rachel and I Brandon” moment?
Ha! I knew Marc Bonnani when he still went by his first name.
0:55 no! i refuse
They did Kick off one of the intro packages with a Quote from you (or i thought it was you, and I thought that was fun)
i know nothing about sweeney todd but i loved their performance and im so suprised u didnt mention it 😭
I can't believe you played The Movies video game growing up! I use to play that game for hours. Unfortunately, it hasn't been re-released because its ownership rights are up in the air. Anyway, glad you had a great night at the Tony Awards--I enjoyed the video!
