When Veron & v.Nistelrooy came for the 2001/02 season after ManUtd had just had 3 consecutive successful seasons with mainly 4-4-2.
It mainly changed to 5 in midfield with v.Nistelrooy on his own up front. The main first choice 5 in midfield would've been Beckham Scholes Keane Veron Giggs.
But Butt was a good replacement in centre midfield (as was Solskjaer a very good replacement as a winger or forward).
The team weren't very successful that year, 3rd in the PL worst finish since 1990/91, a bit unlucky in the champions league lost on away goals in semi-finals but they won the PL the following season and both seasons 2001/02 & 2002/03 the team scored so many goals.

Agreed; CS From The US, L' Pool Fan; Even w/ the Reds being
a notch below Man U in the 90's, a "true" Football Fan is
Fascinated w/ the Variables / Mindset of the Players of that Era
and appreciate the1999 Man U "treble" which is not only the most
prestigious, but arguably the "highest level" sweep historically,
given the quality of team itself & the competition...
L' Pool won the "Co"-2nd Best "Treble" in 2001 w/ the League,
FA, & UEFA (now Europa) Cup Titles which is a feat in it of
itself if you miss Champions League qualification
And to Your Point, the Man U / Arsenal Clubs,
and to some extent Liverpool, could compete very well
      vs current EPL teams

For all the statistics observers out there that seem to be skeptics of scholes’ ability since his numbers aren’t as good as some other elite players in terms of assisting or whatever. Just look at the season he came back, 37 years old and played the 2nd half of the season and Man Utd came within a whisker of winning the league that season with his contribution, they won almost every game with him the team, he was rested against wigan and they lost. It was crazy watching a 37 year old with 6 months off the game come back and just dictate everything from deep role. Unfortunately the stat box doesn’t do justice for him, so the youth just seem to right him off

What an amazing player and the greatest compliment that you can receive is one from a rivals standpoint! Liverpool will be the only team that will ever have my loyalty and dedication but we are not the same team or experience without the other side of the pitch dressed in man united and trying to execute us with a football every single time we play one another

CS From The US / L' Pool Fan; Agreed; Rivals ultimately respect
each other, probably More so than many Fans, and it's
Crazy Beautiful to see the Top Guys Podcasting
and sharing Club/ International Team stories / the Nuances
of the Game, be it Rob, Scholes, and what, Richards, Lineker,
Shearer, Carragher Neville, Keane, Wright & others are doing:
Though I'm Not Mourning Man U's current struggles,
players in & out of the Man U organization are trying to
dissect the problems & solutions in the midst of
L' Pool trying to topple Man City to win the League
and / or Cups, which they seem primed to do,
be it one or the other or Both; Great Podcast
