Nevele Pride sets world record that stands for 19 years. At the time this becomes the fastest race mile ever on a half mile track for trotter OR pacer.... source www.harnessracing.ws
I will forever remember this date and the then world record of 1:56 4/5. I actually had an indirect hand in that happening. I was publicity director at the time and after talking with the weather bureau I was told there was an oncoming storm approaching. They agreed to go with the race a little early, and it's a good thing because it really began to storm. Sure miss those classic days when I was around the likes of Stanley Dancer and Herve Fillion and more. Great memories. Boy, how final trotting and pacing times have changed. Nobody could have envisioned such a thing back in 1969.
One of the greatest (and meanest) trotters ever...visited him in Kentucky...perimeter fence around his paddock to keep his admirers from being eaten. :D
Yeah, he was pretty amazing, even now 56 and change is a pretty good mile on a half track. To think how heavy the bikes were back then.... With the bikes they have now he could have broken 1:50, I think. He was incredible
He was perhaps the meanest stallion that ever lived. His rotten behavior was legendary. Grooms and handlers were literally terrified of him. Somehow he lived to be about 28 years old.
George Miller. Our father started taking us kids to the Saratoga Harness track and flat track in 1951. I saw this race and could not believe how utterly game this horse was. And I still miss The Thief (Hal Story), a mythical figure to this day.
