2700 Miles Motorcycle Trip on a Sportster 883

- 29 Days of riding and filming on a motorcycle.
I began my travels in Bismarck, North Dakota and went out west to Bend, Oregon and back. As far as the road and my body and bike would take me, really. I stayed in many places along the way and met many interesting people. Hopefully, you will see that in this video and feel like you yourself can do this same trip.
I have been riding for only a year, and I didn't want to wait any longer to embark on a trip of this caliber. The true matter at hand is that no one is ever really ready for something like this. Almost everyone was telling me not to do it, but I did it and wouldn't have done it any other way. It gave me a new perspective on riding a motorcycle and being one with nature. I realized that riding isn't about how big or fast your bike is. It's about living life and realizing what the gift of life is really about.
I urge anyone that want's to go, just to do it. Save the cash up, do what you need to do and then just shoot. You won't regret it. Thank you for watching and as always keep the rubber side down.

As my budget only affords a 883 sportster, I found this video to be super inspiring and motivating for the possibilities. Thank you🤓
paul grogan your welcome, I’m glad you liked it. Ride whatever you got. Forget what anyone else has to say, riding is riding 🙏🏻
I have a Fatboy myself and my good friend who is much smaller than I am wanted an Iron. I told him I'll tease him a bit of course (being his friend) but it comes down to what you can afford and What YOU are CAPABLE with. Keep the rubber side down. God Bless
Anyone that tells you the 883 is a slow bike or not good for long trips is just wrong. You can make that bike into anything
I'm not on a budget, could afford a bagger if I wanted it, have a bigger bike, but always prefer my 883. Last ride was a 13 hour ride to Tail of the Dragon. No issues.
dude, you'll love it! I rode across Canada on 1998 Honda shadow 750 ACE back in 2014 as it was all i could afford
This is what life is about. Enjoying yourself and finding peace! Man! I’m inspired to take a long trip in mine!
"i don't know what i'm doing here". Probably the best phrase ever and what adventures are all about.
Back in 2006, I bought a new Sportster 1200L. It has tubeless tires. I learned a long time ago to never get far from home on a bike with tube type tires. I was divorced, and my kids were grown. I was 47 years old, and had almost 4 months of vacation time saved up at my very secure job as a fleet mechanic for a large fleet department. I arranged to take it all. I put aftermarket slip ons on it, for that Harley sound, retuned the carburetor (2006 was the last year for a carbureted Harley) put a 24" high sissy bar on it, along with a couple of hard leather saddlebags using Easy Brackets, so they could be locked on, and removed with a key. I tied a bunch of stuff to the sissy bar, and also had a Cortech 14L magnetic tank bag. The '06 is a rubbermount model, but it still had a lot of vibration. It also has a 4.5 gallon gas tank, which gave me decent range. I did not use a windshield. I'd tried a couple of them when I was much younger, and they seemed to make wind buffeting worse, not better. They also tend to get covered with bugs very quickly, and instead of looking at what's ahead of you, you're looking at squashed bugs. I always wear a full face helmet. I took off from just southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and rode to San Ysidro, CA, then to Key West, FL, Madawaska, ME, Blaine, WA, then back home. That was about 10,000 miles. I took a 1 week break, serviced the bike, including new tires, and took off again. My goal was to cover all 48 lower states, including some time to look around a bit. I came back home twice more for around a week, then took off again. I wound up doing just over 26,000 miles in 4 months. I made all 48 states and D.C. I still have that bike. It has over 48,000 miles on it, and still runs like new. Who says Harleys aren't reliable? I retired a couple years ago, due to "political reasons". I just turned 65 a couple weeks ago. I'm going to keep riding that bike till the wheels fall off.
You can now fill up your vehicle with gas yourself in OR. I live in the AZ desert, and OR and WA were some of my favorite places to ride. Not anymore. I'm now afraid to even go there. Portland is now a complete ghetto. Astoria has to be the most beautiful place in the country. Been to Sturgis twice. My best advice, don't bother. At least not during the rally. The area is beautiful, but the rally is a nightmare.
Your bubble visor took me back to my youth. I'd like to see more young guys on smaller bikes out there on the road. It's mostly us old bastards on our geezer glides. Bikes have gotten way too big, too costly, and rides too short.
servicarrider You said it best. Sportsters are a steal of a price and for the most part bullet proof. I think in general a lot of people forgot what the meaning of riding is and that’s just that, riding
I had a bubble visor back in the early 70's when I rode my 2-stroke Suzuki parallel twin. I didn't dare turn my head to the side when I was going over 30 mph or the wind would unscrew my head. I had to unsnap it and switch to sunglasses or goggles.
I’m out there myself on a softtail slim 24 years young. I agree though I wish I had more riding buddies
@@BrandonJohnson-yb8xn i just got a 07 heritage classic softail. im 29. really love it. im in ga if you are anywhere near let me know i also need people to ride with
i go cross country on a honda shadow 750, small bikes more enjoyable personally
cool trip, I've just did 2200 on my 02 XLH 1200 with 80,000 miles on it, headed for Yellowstone next then Montana, retired life its a little hard on the butt at 70 years old but I'm still going. I'm glad some young people are still riding and doing long trips. You did a good job making your video, live life big don't let any thing stop you.
Thank you, it was a great experience. Their are still a few of us young adventurers out here, but its becoming far and few. Life is an adventure for sure
Traveled farther and longer on my Sportster than most of the cruiser guys that I know. The secret is to take a break each hour or every 65miles or so. Had and drove the BIG Harleys, and sometimes hoped for the Batman fairing under the rain or cold, but at 52, the sportster will always have a place in my heart and garage.
I'm also 52 ride a sportster & am about to do nearly 3000ks on mine over 2 weeks in 3 weeks time crossing 2 states & on a ship over night. To ride around Tasmania with a cousin.
there's no better feeling than touring on a much loved Sporty loaded with the bare essentials.
Diogenes415 that’s the truth! I feel like a champ for completing it!
Junk
Second time watching...I’d like it twice if I could.
AMEN brother God is good, that touched my heart!! Still wonderful people out there in this world!!!!!! Many more blessings your way!!!!
You've changed the world of the sportsters. I'm more in love with my 883 now! Thanks, bro!
Fábio Anselmo Im glad to hear that. They are killer bikes that get over looked
So freaking rad! Exactly what I've been dreaming about since I bought my iron 883. Everyone keeps laughing about the fact I want to tour on this bike. So funny to me...what did people do way back when? You can do whatever you want, on whatever you want. May take more work and not be as comfortable...but isn't that the point? It's the reason I spend every summer backpacking with bare essentials as much as possible. Much respect brother!
Thomas Knapp thank you man! You’re absolutely right. The pain and struggle of doing with what you have is the fun part about it all. I ride because I enjoy it and the freedom it offers.
I wasn’t about to let not have enough money or a bigger big stop me from my dreams of a ride to the west coast. I recommend taking a trip like this to any adventure. Just being some tools and extra oil when you go out there. Sportys like to vibrate and lose screws
@@TylerRietz I'll definitely do that! If you're ever out and about over this way again man, hit me up! I live in Hawaii at the moment, but will back to Idaho next summer. Tknappjr28 on Instagram
NJ TO NC trip to go metal detecting at dig stock 2023 March. Maybe crazy but it is on my bucket list. Longest winter trip to date shore points of NJ to metal detect..
wow, america has some amazing landscapes
Epic journey! Major respect for you taking that trip and doing so in this kind of style. Roughing it. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us!
Bryce Peltz thank you, it was a crazy time. I’ve been day dreaming of doing this trip for years!
Rough necking it is the only way to go. Not like those RVs with AC, beds, and running water. It’s defiantly is a different experience
Still one of the coolest video on youtube.
Fabulous! Thank you for sharing.
Hell yeah!!!!! Thanks for sharing live free and RIDE!!!!! Nice Harley!!!!!!
Laying down miles on that sporty 🤘🤘, one of the greatest bikes Harley has ever made
Projektpat151 truth, they are classic and practically bulletproof
Great Trip and Video! Thank you!
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing!
Awesome and inspiring video man, Keep doing what you do😉
You are a great inspiration
Very cool, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this great video!
I knew another dude that went cross country on a Sporty. You proved riding long distances on an 883 can be done. Once you get back, the bike will be ready for a check up, all bikes need it after a run like that.
Glad you weren't hurt having that spill. You are the man. God bless you. P.S. Have someone with you next time.
Dave G thank you man! Your not wrong there next time I’ll be bringing something for sure. Once I got back my starter completely went out, so I had to drain everything out to get to it so I could replace it. Now all she needs is a new rear tire and she should be set for next season
Super fuckin awesome....i rode from San Antonio Texas to Phoenix Arizona and back when i was in my early twenties on an ironhead 1000 with a 2.2 gal. Peanut tank. One of the best times of my life.
Keep going bro, it's memories like those that are truly priceless.🇺🇸
Awesome video really inspiring me big thanks for that 🤙ride safe 😎
Great video! Well done.
Epic trip man glad to see others taking their sportsters on long trips! I’m currently going through Alaska on my 1200
Redbeard The Kilted Rider, riding a Sportster will make a man out of a boy. They’re not the the most sophisticated bikes but It makes a person respect the miles so much more
inspiring !!! well done, cheers from germany
Awesome trip, video and story!
Great video. Thanks
What an amazing trip! You really captured the esscense of what a solo motorcylce trip should be about. I watched it to the end and my day now feels happier so thank you for making this video!
Great vlog, nothing better than getting out on two wheels and enjoying life.
Hey Tyler! Shout out from Canada! This was an awesome video! I also have a Sportster. Seeing this is really inspirational. Thank you for sharing your trip with the world. Keep up the great work!
I really loved this man, thanks for sharing. Good vibes 🏍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed your documentary for several reasons. I was curious about the 883 and if it could do the job and it did even though your starter went out - all bikes have needs form time to time. The idea of a simple machine that one can maintain is good for most of us if we don't mind the wrenches. Your choice of music was great and I wondered if this was just a phone vid or you used something else. Nice setups and segue like planning ahead, setting up the cam and starting to ride off. You knew in your head how you wanted it to look and it was well done. I've had my street license for over 50 years and although a professional musician I worked for Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and BMW motorcycles. My last tour was on a 97 1100 rt and I've spent many days riding solo across the desert and out to the beaches in CA when I was living in Vegas. Cycling is my Zen and it's always great to see fellow riders with the free spirit you have. Only thing is you have far more nerve than I do when it comes to camping out in bear country. Thanks for the great experience!
Bruce Maier thank you 🙏🏻 that really does mean a lot. It was an adventure with many ups, downs, and all arounds. I learned a lot about this country, that I call my home, and the people that inhabit it. There are A ton of great people out there that left an unforgettable impact on my life. Thank you for enjoying my video and for your positive thoughts that are keeping me inspired to make more videos.
Keep it up. That was cool as hell.
The person who gave a "thumbs down" is a choad.
What a ride, respect to you bud.
Thanks for sharing your adventure. It’s not what you ride but that you go out and do the thing. Very nicely put together video.
Great Video Thank you for taking us on your journey and sharing!
nitrowife thank you for watching! 🙏🏻
Thanks for posting your adventure, Tyler. I have a 2002 Sportster Hugger and love to ride her. You inspired me to ride longer and farther. Ride safe and keep the rubber side down. Peace.
Rad video, man. Just bought an 883 a couple weeks ago and I plan to do a trip similar to yours🤙🏼
When you're ready ( if ever ) a small Milwaukee 8 107 on a shoestring budget Softail ( 2018 or later, when you can afford it ) is a motor that is counterbalanced, it doesn't vibrate or shake much.... and the screws, nuts and bolts don't fall out of it. It has a 6 speed gearbox, so the motor really loafs on the rpms, doesn't scream on highways or interstate. The suspension is pretty decent, you can get 4.5" of travel in the rear shock on some softail models, and the inverted showa fork up front is, I believe 5" of travel, or thereabouts. Think about it, when you're comfortable and further down the road in life. Yeah, an 883 is a sweet bike, easy to work on. Think of it as something to work towards, when the time is right in your life. The comfort is worth it. Came out of a Denny's restaurant on I-5 north of Los Angeles one day, and two young college kids were on a cross country trip in the summer on their bikes.... one of them on a Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor. His rear tire was bald, there were a few nylon threads showing just barely in the center, where tread should be. Rain was coming that day.... he worked for an electrical contractor, but work was a little slow that week. I handed him a $100 bill, just as you were handed a 50, and told him I hope that gets you at least half way there to getting a new rear tire. This was in 2019. Always gotta pay it forward!
Living the dream man! Loved the video and thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome trip.
Thanks for the video! Really amazing nature, empty roads, true freedom!

This is beautiful man. The trip makes me realize how far away from it all I really am. Out here in DC the city is beautiful, but that nature trumps all.

Dude. I’m speechless. I bought a 2006 883 sportster about 2 months ago. And I’ve been saving the money to convert it to a 1200, while I’m still going too, you have gave me complete faith in my bike. And mad respect for doing that journey. I hope that one day I’ll be able to do the same.

hell yeah! It was a blast. I think getting up to glacier would be fun. It`s far away but if you put your mind to it anything is possible! Beautiful country around those parts, I went snowboarding there back in 2017
Kansas sucks
Nice, brought me back to 1980 when I bicycled across the country and found it to be a very good experience that can never be duplicated or forgotten by me.
Major In the Republick truth, these experiences are something we won’t forget
Emmm duck is the best.
Thanks for posting your trip. I need to get lost myself it's been too long!
Ride hard roll free..
Truth brother! It`s completely worth it once your on the road!
Great video.. I've always had smaller bikes that made highway riding impossible. I have a drz400sm now which I'd prefer not to take xcountry so I'm in the market for an 883! I'm glad to see that someone did what I was thinking with success! Thanks
Sir I enjoyed this inspirational video detailing how Mother Nature and real human interactions are and how it’s go out and do thing and this definitely earned my subscription and like, thank you for this great piece of art
Thank you for the kind words. I respect everything you said 🙏🏻 I plan on creating a video about my current year in japan. I’ve been documenting the experience as well

Man there really is something magical and serene about a solo-trip.
Lol, I defiantly did learn a lot about life and myself during this one!
This is by far one of the best sportster tour I have seen atleast. Amazing courage and taste, simply wow. I been planning a similar trip down here in Australia. You are truly an inspiration. Thumps up mate
Shaminder Grewal thank you 🙏🏻 motorcycle trips can definitely mind opening. Taking risks and living life is all what it’s about
2 years ago you must of done that already. This time last year I rode my Honda CMX 500 Rebel from Sydney to Melbourne then 🚢 over to Tasmania back to Sydney did about 3000 ks in 2 weeks. Doing that trip again in 3 weeks time this time on my HD 883 sportster.
Makes me appreciate my 883 even more.
HAILPROPHECY __ hell yes brother
