  • Unlike most cars that make a clicking noise when the battery is too low to start the car, the Prius just does nothing. It doesn't even give you a warning by struggling to start a few times before the battery is actually dead. The car will boot up, but the it won't go into gear and the gas engine wont' start.

This video shows you where the battery is at, and what it takes to pull and replace it. Be sure to consult the owners manual.

I came in here because I want to help someone who has the same problem as mine. Just recently my 2008 Prius went completely dead even after changing to a new battery. There was no life, nothing at all. I had to ask my friends to give me a jump. After watching many CZcams videos I found out that one of my fuse was gone. When you open the fuse box, at the right under C section, there are two blue no.15 fuses. I changed the second one from the top. After that I also had to tighten up my negative volt battery which is in the trunk attached to the back of the car. Make sure you unscrew the negative volt before putting on the new fuse. After that it came to life. Hope it helps someone.

I watched your video and it was very helpful. Thank you very much. I bought my batteries at Costco for $214. They are group size S46B24R-AGM batteries. It was easy to follow the instructions from the video. Save me a lot on labor to install them.

Very helpful, I just changed my battery on the first try by following this video. I got my battery from Napa Auto for $260. Just some info for anyone trying this replacement for the first time, my new battery came with a little plastic adapter for the vent port (the last thing you disconnect from the old battery), so if you try and plug the vent port to the new battery and it's too big to fit, whoever sold you the battery probably owes you an adapter. It looks like a little 1 inch cube with a short tube coming out of it.

That was easy except the positive connection takes a bit to pull off. Thank you

Excellent video. The Gen 3 looks a tad easier than Gen 2 to replace the 12v battery :) nice one dude!

Random but that slant side of the positive battery terminal is where i hook up my 30a amp power cable for my speakers. And still everyone seems to connect it right at the top...wrong.

Can we do a list of the sizes you need? I know it's in the video but just for reference.

Hi, many thanks for your videos - very well done! Did you get the replacement battery from a Toyota dealership or some alternative source. If it is the latter, what make and model? My local Toyota dealer does not have the correct battery in stock and I am looking for a suitable alternative.

Hi, I myself am trying to get this 12V batt and have checked around. It seemed to me that the best one would be from the dealers. I live in southern Calif (San Bernardino), not much of a choice, only at local Autozone that has it but it's only like 3 years life warrantee it costs around $200 plus tax and in stock to pick up while one of the Toyota dealers said the batt should be in by October and at around $250 plus tax but 78 months life warrantee. I searched Amazon and found one a little bit cheaper, but I'll wait for the dealer one, in the meantime I'm charging the dying batt with batt charger from Amazon 24/7 just to keep it from totally depleted. And by doing that I can start it up and able to shift into gears. Did U get yours yet?

Why do you install an optima battery and then refer to a different battery in Amazon link?

Thanks, very helpful, because if you are unfortunate enough to own a Toyota, you always need video's to figure stuff out 😡

I have a 2013 Prius that won't start. It's in a lot on a lift. I wish they made a key entry for the rear door. Someone is going to have to climb in in the dark and remove a large amount of stuff in my trunk to get to the battery. Terrible design. Who in the world would put a battery there?

In your key fob is the key for the driver's door. Turn it to the right and it unlocks the driver's door. Click it to the right a 2nd time it will unlock the passenger doors and your hatch. Click it to the left and it locks all the doors.
