Springy Steve’s Autumn walk of the garden, October 2019

  • Just a last walk through of the garden. I was going to start lifting a few of the tender plants today but decided not to due to the fact that it has rained most of the day. Some plants are past their best now but a lot of the plants are still looking good.
    I’ve not done much work in the garden for the last few weeks and I have just enjoyed spending time in it before the autumn winds and first frosts blacken and damage the foliage.

      Thank you sharon. One of the next videos I aim to do will be after our first hard frost showing the damage that it causes to the garden. It’s amazing just how black tender plants become when frost damaged. It will then start to show the evergreen backbone of hardy plants that we get to look at for the rest of winter. Don’t want to think too much about that yet though 😆

    Just superb ! Do you leave your colocasias in the garden or lift and store?

    • @Springyfeller
      @Springyfeller  Před 4 lety

      Hi Sylvia, I lift and store all the Colocasia. I tried to keep them growing in the bathroom but they were badly attacked by aphids and then spider mites. I now tend to cram as many as I can into the same pot, water them in to settle the compost around the roots and then they are left to dry out over winter in the heated outhouse. I think there is enough moisture in the stems to stop most of the corms drying out completely. I sometimes get aphids on them but it’s easier to treat when not I the house. If the plants are really small though I will try to keep them ticking over as there may not be enough moisture in the small leaves/stems to stop the small corms from drying out completely and then dying. If the compost is too wet the corms will rot. As with a lot of what I overwinter inside, it’s a juggling act to keep things ticking over till spring. I don’t always get it right but I’m learning what works for me. Some varieties such as mojito, coal miner and black magic for example, I can’t keep happy over winter and I lose them. 😢

    still looking awesome! ive booked a week off in november to put my garden to bed hope the hard frosts dont come before then. do you protect your musa basjoos at all? im going to try protecting mine this year always let them get frosted to the ground and start afresh in spring.

    • @Springyfeller
      @Springyfeller  Před 4 lety

      rootman rootman Thanks! It depends what you have to protect. Cannas, Dahlias, Gingers etc will survive a hard frost as it’s the rhizomes that need protecting and not the foliage/stems. I have had enough of properly protecting the bananas. I lift all the tender ones but Musa basjoo and M. sikkimensis just get blankets thrown over them on the coldest nights day -7c. I remove them again as the temperatures rise again. It’s a bit of a gamble but I’m fed up of wrapping them up in straw or loft insulation as it creates a lot of waste material and mess in spring.

    • @Springyfeller
      @Springyfeller  Před 4 lety +1

      Roman Kunetskiy I just leave it to die down to the ground in winter and I don’t do anything with it. It has red potato looking rhizomes which seem to overwinter fine in our free draining soil. I do have other impatiens but not I. tinctoria........ Yet. I have seen it for sale but not sure if I like it enough to give it space.
