Ship 33 has an entire row of newer, smaller tiles, and their location along a reinforced point appears to be important.
Perhaps this helps to avoid tile cracking along a high-stress point, or maybe it’s just a test, and SpaceX is fine with risking a whole ship. What do you think?

As a work mostly from home husband and father of homeschool kids myself I hugely appreciate the off screen partnering Stefanie does to making your family enterprise work, but it's also a delight each time we are gifted some of her on screen participation in this whole family space news business venture. Like @cmilkau I agree it has to do with the stringer spacing. Smaller tiles are a better more even fit in that location, I'm sure the larger tiles are a bit fiddly and risk breaking or coming off. It definitely makes sense to try the smaller ones.

The most impressive thing this week is a VERY short failure turnaround. For perspective, the space shuttle had a 33 month haitus after the challenger accident
The challenger RUD was an institutional culture failure. There was literally nothing wrong with the vehicle. They literally KNEW it needed a cold weather hold and launched anyway...... Kaboom.

Probably very unlikely, but I think he reason there is new mini-tiles is because this will be the first ship to return to launch site. After it does they can examine which tile method is more effective.
There’s optimism for you. It may end in tears. WAI?
The welded junction, between the middle bulkhead and the two main tanks, *_interrupts the internal stringers._* The external top-hat stringers transfer stress around the interruption and join the internal stringers, but this increases the external hull diameter. This leaves less thickness for the tiles above them.
This hull junction also has quite intense vibrations transferred from the bulkhead.
Being scaled far smaller here, the thermal tiles are getting much greater strength, while the increased number of small gaps allows more resiliency.
It also makes me wonder if Felix adopted Stefanie's speaking style, or vice versa :D

I didn't think anyone could match the enthusiasm of Felix, but Stephanie nailed it!
It occurs to me that SpaceX may be missing an opportunity--test thermal protection systems on the launcher legs.
I think the pressure from the engine exhaust is much higher than re-entry, so it might just crush the tiles if you tried to put them on the OLM legs.
Ten bucks they tried it already. Maybe just unofficially, but I can't imagine them missing that idea.

@@johnbrobston1334 but by the same token, if they can take that kind of beating they're probably significantly heavier than they need to be for re-entry, and given how much surface area is covered in tiles that's not an insignificant amount of extra mass cutting into your payload.

The catch depends highly on engines not ingesting bubbles and have enough fuel! They should aim for the ocean and if relight works they should hover towards the pad
I was quite worried about CO2+H2O ices building up in the main LOX tank, interfering with the engines. However, the new COPVs feeding pressurant gas to the dedicated landing tank reassures me that landing thrust will be trouble free.
@@imconsequetau5275 very good point, I think they put big metal meshes over the intakes and in the pipes to break up the ice
@@briangman3 I think the stainless wire mesh does not break up the ice, but only excludes larger clumps. Ice accumulates and may clog the filter.
Each engine inlet (and filter) is set above the tank "floor", above where dense (CO2) ice slush settles. Filters may abruptly clog when the liquid propellant sloshes and brings that concentrated slush to the inlet. When a filter is clogged with too much slush, the oxygen inlet pressure drops and triggers that engine to shutdown.
If too abrupt, the engine will RUD which maybe is what occurred on IFT-4 during the landing burn startup.
@@imconsequetau5275 I modeled fluid flow in oil in the pipes, really depends on speed of flow but your definitely on the right side, got to simulate with all the conditions it to really know

Yeah. SpaceX simulates a lot. But in the end, they always run real world tests to be sure. IFT3 had Starship engine failures before shutdown. That is why the filter area was increased so much on IFT4, so the engines ran great even up to shutdown. Good job!
But the booster restart revealed an isolated engine RUD during landing. That is why the IFT5 landing is going to have such thorough precautions with clean LOX propellant from a separate tank.

I wasn't watching at the start, just listening. At first I thought my sound card had installed a voice modifier. The script was the same, the deliver was the same. The timing was the same.
