  • Infidelity is one of the most traumatic, heartbreaking experiences someone in a romantic partnership can go through, so why does it often get glamorized on screen? Our culture seems obsessed with cheating as a concept - with entire shows based around it. And in real life cheating scandals, we live for the drama. Adam Levine, The Try Guys, Good Morning America hosts Amy Robach and TJ Holmes - these stories compel us because we see the mask of celebrity slip, and we’re able to view these people through a different lens. Here’s our take on the popularity of infidelity stories, why they’re so entertaining, and how more nuanced portrayals of cheating show us that it’s not always so black and white.

As someone who has been cheated on, I really hate seeing cheating being praised in movies. They especially do this with love triangles where the main character cheats on her spouse for the “ love of her life “ and they make it seem like it’s ok because they are “ soul mates destined to be together “. They never think about how it affects the person that’s being cheated on. For me, I caught my ex( then boyfriend ) best friend sneaking into his room through his window late at night. I was there for him and supported him even when he lost his job. I even loaned him money and he turned around and cheated on me and never paid me back. If this was a movie, people would be rooting for my ex and his best friend and I would simply be the girl standing in the way of “ their love “. 🙄

The main character almost always gets a pass: "oh they're unhappy, oh they're unappreciated, oh they are trapped in their relationship." Of all the tropes you guys have criticized for their negative influences on society, the fact that *infidelity* of all things, is getting defended is WILD to me.
In any case, it always seemed to me the like reverse of what was said, and men are given more passes for cheating, but when women do it, it's unforgivable. We've seen characters have those conversations. Because for men, it's often meaningless, but for women there's often more feelings involved.
Either way, this is one trope that usually makes me lose respect for a character when they do it. It's rare when I find an instance where its justified, beyond the writers' own salaciousness. So it may be the reason I stay away from genres where cheating is the first step to a happy ending (many rom coms) and prefer it handled seriously like the betrayals they are (Revolutionary Road, The Affair, A Teacher)

I remember seeing another CZcams video which highlights how infidelity is often used by screen writers as a plot device.
When a man gets cheated on it often serves to expose his own flaws, and it becomes a reason for him to turn his life around and go on an emotional journey. When a woman gets cheated on, it's often because her boyfriend is a douche, and then she can leave him for the right guy without feeling guilty.

A lot of soap operas (teleseryes) in the Philippines usually involves infidelity. "The Legal Wife" is one of them, it was hyped up so much especially when it was the episode where the wife and the mistress had a cat fight (literally pulling each other's hair, yelling). That show was one of the highest rated teleseryes when it was leading up to the ep of the catfight.
You like the drama but eventually you'll get desensitized with infidelity. Movies and tv shows about this topic makes this abnormal thing normal. Just my 2 cents though

Also alot of partners guilt trip each other into staying with them. @heynodont Před rokem +1

@@unperfectperfectionist @Jennifer That's exactly why I worded my comment the way I did. I'm not talking about open relationships; if that works for you and your partner, great! If that's what both of you have *discussed and agreed* upon. I'm talking about monogamy and LTR. No one's "forcing" you into monogamy and LTR. You can find a partner that's ok with being in an open relationship. The key is that you both agree on what you want. If y'all didn't agree to being exclusive, then there's no problem seeing other people. However, if y'all decided to be exclusive, and one party decides to start seeing other people behind their partner's back, then that's a problem because you're breaking the agreement.
And even in open relationships, there are "limits", boundaries that you or your partner may not feel comfortable with either of you crossing. But, again, it all boils down to what you discussed and agreed upon; to what your partner is *trusting you* to stay true to.
I say this as someone that's been in both types of relationships.

Women tend to cheat to leave you, and they're building a life without you first (monkey branching). I think that's useful info to have in accordance with this video. Charles and Camilla were TRASH because they knew they were still going to hook up, and brought an innocent 3rd party into their bull shit. Now if they were up front with Diana about their relationship, then she could have made the informed choice not to marry the man and he could find someone else that would've been cool with the title of Princess and let them do their business. The lying, gaslighting, manipulation and lack of consent that's the big problem with cheating.

Most sexology studies show monogamy isn't our natural state. It makes sense that cheating narratives somehow speak to that, even if it's playing to it in a most unethical and dramatic way. Who would watch a film in which the characters agree to other sexual or romantic partners and there is no drama? People who don't like it just wouldn't accept without said drama, and for people who do....still no drama.

One movie that I think takes a pretty deep look into infidelity at least for both genders is 2007 Little Children. In this film we have Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson as next door neighbors who are both stay at home parents that are neglected by their spouses who are busy with their careers. The two of them don't begin their affair out of boredom or lust or even a need for sexual intimacy. They got to know each other as they would often cross paths during their daily routines and their children would play together. As a result they formed a strong bond and attraction for each other, which eventually resulted in them sleeping together. Despite feeling guilty about cheating on their significant other, they carry on with the affair and at one point they even consider running away together near the end of the movie. I think this movie does a good job of showing that adultery isn't always a malicious act that's borne out of hatred or indifference towards one's life partner. These two characters know they are wronging their better half and feel shame for this act of betrayal but at the same time they feel closer with each other than with their actual spouses.

Sadly these juicy cheating stories are as old as they get. Just ask the gods of Greco Roman mythology!
Also there are the famous Arthurian romances with Tristan and Isolde and of course Lancelot and Guinevere.
Because of the concept of courtly love the writers lauded these romances because of how it was perceived just loving someone because you’re in love could inspire nobility in knights and gave women a sense of power and escape in their times, but the marriage/ other relationship barriers make this love untrainable and thus so beautiful.
