  • This video should answer most any questions about how to re upholster a MK4 VW headliner.
I can't stress enough, the foam backing has to be completely removed from the headliner unit before you can apply your fabric. You will be attaching the fabric to the fiberglass located under the foam backing.
-Remove headliner from car, remove metal fabric retention clips from headliner, rip off the old fabric, use a wire brush to remove the foam, use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface when done.
-choose a fabric of your liking from your local fabric store. however, keep in mind that you will want something fairly thin and or fairly stretchy to get around bends and corners easily.
The fabric I chose was very thin, not very stretchy, and it came out very well. It wasn't too difficult to manipulate into place.
-Spray fabric with light water, throw it in dryer till all wrinkles are gone.
-Drape fabric over half of the headliner unit, get it perfectly lined up and ready.
-Spray the exposed half fabric and half headliner unit with your choice of adhesive, let it dry to the touch, typically 10 min.
-Slowly and gently lay the fabric in place starting from the middle and working your way out.
gently lay it in place until you are happy with the lay out.
-From this point you need to massage it into place starting out gentle and pushing harder as you go, once again starting from the middle to the outside.
-Once you are happy with the results complete the other half of the application in the same exact manner.
-Stay close by for the next 24 hours, keep it fairly warm and keep checking for areas that may have lifted off the unit. simply massage these areas back down with a lot of pressure.
-If, after 24 hours, any areas don't come out so great and you can't convince the fabric to work with you, use a heat gun very cautiously to heat it up and convince it to comply with lots of pressure. BE CAREFUL! you don't want a burn mark in your awesome new headliner!
Good luck.....thanks for watching! Let me know how yours turned out in the comments!

Yes the foam has to be removed first. A wire brush works pretty good.

Absolutely great video man. Thank you for the tips. I would love to know how large of a piece of material I need to do this on my mk4 GTI. I want to use a customer design but done know how large of a piece I need to order. It's not a pattern but a graphic so I cant order something too big.

Well the width is pretty standard, don’t quote me but I believe it’s 2 yards. Every vehicle I’ve ever done was fairly close side to side but I always order 4-6 yards so I can do visors and other panels etc. it also helps to go overboard incase you mess up. This stuff is usually very cheap so get plenty. But if your tight on money go with 3 yds of length. Should be more than enough

Looks like you have done a great job, looks great, can you tell me if you removed the foam from the headliner? I have just removed the material from my sagging headliner and the foam looks pretty awful, I was thinking of scrapping the foam off and trying to re-glue the material.

Curious if the material you used had a foam backing usually used for headliner or just a fleece material from fabric store? Ohh and also did you spray the material and the headliner both or just one?

It’s Just a cheap fabric from the store. I don’t use foam backed fabrics cause the fabric choices are very limited, cost a bit more, and tends to not last as long.
