Hmmmm.... *Picks up pencil*
I felt instantly recognized the moment I heard that.
Everything this woman said is 100% relatable đ
Something about these pearls make the goblin woman in me happy. Or is it my inner dragons insatiable quest for jewals and semiprecious gems?
I'm already this. (Fun fact! My mom loves eat raw oysters and for two years in a row we shucked and ate them for her birthday, and I found a pearl both years! First a small white one and then a black one!
The fact that you can get the pearls without killing the oyster makes this even more messed up
Makes sense if you can put another irritant into the same oyster that's proven to be a good pearl-producer.
don't "worry" these oysters were probably dead before the mlm even got them.
what if they wanna keep their pearl it just seems like stealing to meee đ©
That's not the point... The whole system is flawed and unethical

AGREEEEEED
And they are on every social media platform, it seems!
and this has been going on for years. on youtube at least
11:20 they are oysters. They're a species known as black-lipped pearl oysters from French Polynesia, but those are really young-looking oysters. No way they're even old enough to be producing pearls of that size. My guess is that they're the castoffs of a "legit" pearl farm that rejected their irritant before it became a pearl or they're part of the brood stock that are used to maintain population for the farm. Either way, they were dead when the pearl was inserted, then preserved in formalin and vacuum sealed like you figured
Thank you for an explanation! I was wondering what exactly is going onđ
Are young oysters this brittle? I'd assumed they were a clam species because of how easily the shell crumbled.
@@Hiforest yeah, they are. It takes a few years to get really solid
@@kylebaryonyx9478I've not seen many oysters as an adult, their numbers have declined quite badly so I'll probably not see a baby one, it's still fun to know more about them.

Ethical Pearl Cultivation is a very real thing (and I'm very passionate about it because I love Oysters, they are so important đ°)
But, there are companies that humanely remove pearls without killing or abusing the animal. Yes the pearls are more expensive, but you are also paying for the care of these animals!

I looked into this mlm years ago and it was found out that the type of oyster they uses doesn't have pearls. Which led to people discovering that they take dead oysters put the pearls in them and reseal them to sell.

I got to tell you I donât know how Amazon allows the shipment of those oysters as well seems like a biological foreign disaster. Look never buy raw untreated organisms from the internet, they could contain unknown bacteria to viruses. As a biologist Iâm so concerned about the whole live or formerly live thing trade.
It sounds like they're preserved in formaldehyde, so that's probably killed off most things in it, but on the other hand if that formaldehyde is at disinfectant-level concentrations then no one should be shucking these bare-handed... it's a lose-lose proposition!
As a fellow biologist, I appreciate your concern for the spread of various pathogens when buying questionable organisms via Amazon. I'm not sure how familiar you are with measures most countries have taken regarding the import and export of potentially harmful biological agents, but generally, there are strict regulations on what's allowed into a port of entry. They play zero games with that stuff.
Plus, the formalin solution acts as a disinfectant, and it's likely these critters were sourced domestically to avoid customs. If you really want to talk about biological foreign disasters, all you have to do is remember that the exotic pet trade is alive and well...
A very excellent video exposing this "scam".
Those don't even look like any oysters I have ever seen, at least in the Pacific North West or New Zealand.
I picked oysters and shucked them when I was young. We always wore heavy gloves and used an oyster knife to open the shells, and even with that, sometimes a person would run the oyster knife through their gloves and impale themselves on it.
I wish you had worn rubber gloves on when you opened the "oysters' (I think they were more likely fresh water clams) as :
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and not healthy to breathe or get on your skin.
Having said that, in reality, out of the hundreds/ thousands of Pacific oysters my family & I had opened, we found only -maybe- 2 pearls and they were irregular, and as you said, the same color as the calcium in the shell. I have found some shells with a "bump" in the shell where they "pearl" had actually cemented itself into the shell.
Pearls can grow inside some mussels and clams as well. In Texas, we have a chain of lakes in the central part of the state and they contain freshwater clams and, on occasion, you can find a freshwater pearl inside them. Rarely do they look like any jewelry-grade pearl, but they are pearls if in name only. The ones that are formed into the shell are called mabe or blister pearls.
I think it's probably formalin, not formaldehyde. It's a similar smell, but it's less harmful. Formaldehyde has fallen out of fashion lately
Regardless of what chemical it is exactly, it could still cause irritation. Good ventilation and gloves are a definite must for anyone wanting to try this
@@kylebaryonyx9478 Isn't formalin just another name for formaldehyde dissolved in water?
@@diablominero yeah, 100% formalin just means a saturated water solution, of about 40% formaldehyde by volume or 37% by mass
The "animal blind box" shit is wild, like... oyster carcasses with pearls shoved in them, people shipping undisclosed live animals to people (that often arrive deceased), shit like that... it's mind boggling.
I've always loved pearls, so when I discovered I could buy drilled pearls for like, $10 off Etsy, my crafts got FANCY.
I don't even recommend doing this yourself as this kills the oyster. There are farms now a days where they very gently take the pearl out and put in a new thing of sand and whatnot. They don't even open the oyster all the way, just enough to get the pearl out and replace it. This keeps them alive
All I could think about is how endangered so many freshwater mollusk species are đ„ș they are so crucial to the health of freshwater ecosystems but they are some of the most vulnerable to human activity
It's probably past the point of no return unless we stopped trawling nets and destroying the river and sea beds now, I just don't think enough people are taking it seriously. With any luck the planet will kill us before we kill everything else, humans are too dumb to be the dominant species.
Yeah, I remember how just earlier this year, the DNR or the BLM or one of those agencies released a list of species of animals that are now officially declared extinct and I remember there wasn't one but SEVERAL species of mollusks and it was because of pollution, overfishing, and climate change :(
It's so tragic how other living things are treated for such a petty reason.

I literally bought a freshwater pearl for a dollar at my local rock shop this last week. They're all very pretty, but when a pearl is cheaper than a quartz...
"it just chillin, it was placed!"
I lolled at that. The sheer audacity of this scam lol
This used to be a Facebook live thing! I watched oyster openings on Facebook YEARS ago and was fascinated. I see theyâve finally discovered TikTok lol.
They had to switch platforms because Facebook will shut them down if they open the oysters on camera. I guess some people complained too much about animal cruelty so now they don't allow the videos
Came here to say the same thing!! "Just shuck it" on Facebook
MLMs are supposed to be against TikTok's terms of service, but no matter how much they get reported, the scams remain đ€Ź
These unboxing/random selection videos on tiktok are totally tapping into gambling impulses. There's also ones where they have these giant rock tumblers and people order a certain amount of rocks/crystals, and they scoop them out of the tumbler live to fix the orders. They call out the names of the people who ordered, go "Ooh wow you got the big amethyst" or whatever. Just hundreds of people buying random rocks and watching them get scooped out live online. There's kind of a parasocial relationship aspect to it, too. People become fans of these sellers on tiktok, then get a crumb of attention from them by placing an order.
This entire video satiated my slowly aging woman brain. We touched on oysters, jewelry technically because pearls, economics, employer etiquette. Just a whole lot of adult stuff.
Echo mentioned that the oysters smelled like formaldehydeâŠ
Well, the shells are shattering
And the pearls are clearly placed, not formed
The flesh of the oyster is clearly in rigor mortis
They probably were treated with formaldehyde.
i was thinking the same thing! and if they do have formaldehyde, isn't that a dangerous thing to be selling to people?? Isn't it illegal??? I was worried for echo when she used her bare hands while she opened them and I hope she washed her hands immediately. đŹ
@@hazelnuiit it's not illegal to sell big ass buckets of sea urchins submerged in a formaldehyde solution, so I promise the tiny bit present in those oysters is legal. It also shouldn't really be enough to cause any permanent damage, although if you open these like,,, 24/7 there would absolutely be some concerns, just like how it's fine to be x-rayed, but the doctor who operates the machine has to fully leave the room every time it goes off. You can have ten, twenty, thirty x-rays done in your life and be perfectly fine, especially if they're spread out, but if you work with the machine and get dosed twenty to thirty times _a day,_ you'd develop cancer and other issues within a decade.
But yeah if you get these oysters wash your hands afterwards, because you will get a rash and maybe a bit of nausea if you leave it on your skin for a few hours!
@@hyperfox0934 Just asking if what they are packaged in is dangerous and you can't inhale or touch it can't they be sued? I mean looking from the video there was never anything about gloves or that you need a respirator or discloses the toxic chemicals. So can't they be sued for it? I know its like a doctors xray but at least your aware of the small harmfulness it causes. With these they don't even tell people and even if you just have to wash it off you should be made aware
@@dory7693 tru, legally you might be able to sue them, but in reality things usually have to get fairly bad with multiple reports of rashes or severe problems in order for any sort of legal retaliation to stick. Also most people honestly might be fine without washing their hands: I just have sensitive ass skin so I know I absolutely have to or I get sick, and while I would therefore suggest everyone does, it doesn't nessasary mean everyone would get a rash, yaknow? Basically I'm not really sure it would trip that particular regulation, but I do know that washing your hands afterwards is just good practice, and can completely mitigate effects even for weak ass bitches like myself. (Also the minor amounts you'd be inhaling is completely negligible as far as I'm aware, so that one at least isn't a concern here unless you're again like,,, hotboxing yourself with oysters for 20 years.)
@@hyperfox0934 thanks i was curious!
Watching someone open a artificial colored pearl from a oyster that had already died is strangely upsetting. đ„
We actually know how to ethically harvest pearls from live oysters, that way an oyster can live to create more pearls
âDonât pay some random milf on Facebook to open an oyster for you for $25â is a sentence and a halfđ€Ł Full serious though, I was thoroughly engaged this whole video!
This video was fascinating - Iâve never seen this type of pearl farming before and it does seem pretty darn sick. But the videos I love to watch are of these beautiful, sustainable pearl farms. Basically, they have this technique where the oyster isnât harmed but are opened and the pearl removed in a very gentle way, a new nucleus put back in and the oyster lowered back into the sea. Itâs strange and beautiful to watch. By contrast, those images of folks ripping loads of pearls out of one oyster made me feel a bit queasy. Thanks for shining a light on this đ
Where can I find such videos? :)
I also made a comment JUST like yours. I do not recommend even getting the pearls yourself as there are sustainable farms that don't kill the oyster :)
that sounds really nice, id appreciate if you could link one of the channels!!
I would have to assume that these farms also sell off the shells and the like, so they do not care if they are killed. The shells are used to make watch-faces, beauty products, and the like.
@@titheproven954 i did a deep dive recently and the âleftoversâ get sold for the oysters itself and the Mother of Pearl also gets sold
You are absolutely right that those were not oysters! (Unless they're extremely young and have never been exposed to natural elements)
These look more like a type of razor clam.
They are oysters, but very young ones and likely not exposed, like you said. They're called black lipped pearl oysters, and the really young ones lack those distinctive ridges
Makes me think of all the ads I've been seeing recently for becoming a reseller/drop shipper being marketed exactly like an MLM towards women. It's weird as hell.

As a jeweler, I can confirm that natural blue pearls are the rarest and therefore the most expensive. They come from certain types of oysters, including French Polynesian oysters, not just any oyster. Theses MLM are not event trying to make their claim belivable. they just pray on the Wow effect and lack of effort to look for facts.
While I also have this tiny goblin who like surprises , i think theses ones are a bit too far.
Side note:
Some pearls, even famred ones can be very expensive. It is true that you can buy them for cheap on amazon and other site, but the more perfect* they are, the more expensive they get.
*The rounder the shpe is, if the colour is uniform, if the luster is bright , etc.
* It can also be an imperfect, but very unique shaped pearl, like ballon pearls are expensive for their uniqueness
2:03 pretty sure that if its classified as PPE, the company is required to provide it, or else theyre violating OSHA. Your boss can ask you to buy your own nonslip shoes, but if its a pair of steel toed boots that are a requirement for the job, they either need to buy it for you, or reimbuse you for the purchase. Not sure if that extends to contract work, but thats definitely the case for employment! Find your state's labor board and hotline, and remember: whistleblowers cannot be legally penalized!! (sorry this has nothing to do with the oysters i just know a lot about OSHA)
idk about the US but in Aus if you are a contractor, you are considered your own boss and you are required to provide your own PPE.

You should check out ASMR vids. Very relaxing & nice to fall asleep to
I really want to know the way of thinking behind that. What was so mesmerizing in watching people dissect animals?
I always thought of that as fundamentally cruel for the poor animals and I never got hooked on it, but I did fall asleep to videos of women retrieving rainbow colored quartzes from rivers and such and I always thought it was so fake because they found just so many on such little time but the stones were so very beautiful I really wanted one...
It was that or geode openings
Bro this is my first time watching you in years. Your adventure time art style video got me on my real start of my art journey
there is also a bunch of "crystal scoop" streams in which they scoop cheap polished stones from a vibratory tumbler. i recommend looking into these ones as well.
Most are cheap crystals. And pricing isn't great. It isn't really an MLM though. They just don't have good product.
I've seen a few videos where they keep the oysters alive. So, very carefully with surgical tools, open it up enough to fish the pearl out before putting the oyster back. Not sure if this is ethical, cause dunno pain levels, but I'd imagine its better than ripping them apart?
IVE SEEN THOSE TOO!!!! Oyster TikTok is so strange...
Crap I missed that you literally said that! Ignore me lol
I believe that's the most ethical way to farm pearls.
I know that one person takes care of the oysters while the pearls grow and they pour something on them to make them open up by themselves (the liquid is safe for them) then they just use a few safe tools to keep the shell open, grab the pearl out, then place the oyster back.
That's about as safe as it can be from what I saw. Sadly not many do the more ethical way of pearl farming.
oysters don't have nerves, so very unlikely they feel anything
@@konnad Oysters do have nerves, and they react to their environment by opening and closing depending on if the conditions around them are favourable or potentially hostile. They don't seem to have anything analogous to a brain though, so whether they can be said to be aware of what's happening to them is an open question. But we used to think fish couldn't feel pain. We also used to think insects couldn't feel pain. Until we actually checked to see if that was true and found they could. So I wouldn't rule anything out
I love watching because we have similar brains. It's like "Oh, lets watch this particular thing for a week straight and learn everything about it then move on to the next thing". Can't wait to see what next thing you learn too much about (I'm in a lull and haven't found my next hyperfixation)
look into the scp foundation, if you like science-y and kinda horror-y things. it's got a lot of material, and my hyperfixation with it has lasted almost a year due to this, and is still not showing signs of stopping! it can get a bit confusing considering there's so many writers that write different things, but it gets a lot easier when you know that you are kind of supposed to pick and choose which pieces you believe in :]

I canât tell you what the name of the company is, but they would use these tools to get the pearl, and put in a membrane, and then put the oysters in the ocean. It was interesting and quite relieving to know eithical companies are out there.
If you remember the name of the company, can you post it/edit your comment with it?
Yeah, they're chemically resealed and that's why most everyone wears gloves when opening these oysters
loved your straightforward discussion of MLMs haha
I remember watching you a few years back and I was like ehhh fudge it, Iâll watch! Quality content đ€đœđ€đœđ€đœ
Ive seen an pearl harvest where they pry the oyster open just a little, remove the pearl, add a little base and then put the oyster back into the ocean all without killing the oyster at all. It wasnât an MLM just a little pearl business that minimized as much harm as possible on TikTok. No I donât remember the name it was at least an year and a half ago
Eventually the oyster will be fully shucked though and all the pearls removed. They get to be an age where you can no longer get pearls out of them.
Awesome PSA. Thanks for doing the research and getting it to us in such a bite size way. But I like your metaphor best. It may be because the blindbox opening never itched my brain the same way but I'm luckily not interested in going down the same rabbit hole you went through. Wish there was another randomized color code system that represented a person's fate though... Oh, probably why I'm addicted to youtube tarot readings.
You just took the long ass road to describe the basis of every MLM EVER!!!đđ
I love your whole vibe and I loved this video. Super informative â€
awesome video XD and yes I had no clue this was a thing on tiktok Lol
As someone who studied at GIA I laughed SO HARD at this in disbelief.
The animation you used for the frog dissection analogy reminded me of how they portrayed the Morgendorfers on that episode of Daria when they went camping and ate the trippy berries Jake gathered. I feel like thatâs the existence where Pearl Parties from MLMs make sense- an episode of Sick Sad World where well-meaning, high-strung parents are convinced they can do something thatâs actually dangerous.
havent watched ur vids in YEARS but now ur in my recommended im havibg flashbacks
Echoooo I love you đ
I like the sustainable oyster vids where they take care of the oysters while they grow the pearls and then take the pearls out without harming it.
It's really disturbing to watch the other ones knowing they mostly throw those dead oysters away after getting pearls.
but doesnt the oyster has to be hurt in order to form a pearl in the first place?
@@raeowlsworth2435 I don't think it's really that damaging compared to most other types of farming. Though it's irritating which is why they coat the grain of sand so it won't grind into the soft part. Hence why the pearls come out smooth and round.
If you're vegan or don't like any irritants no matter how big or small then I reccomend not buying pearls. I don't own any pearls either and I don't particularly watch oyster stuff but I've seen a few and the best ethical ones are the ones where they actually put effort into caring for the oysters rather than ripping them open to throw them away.
The ones shown are not in an edible state. Freshwater clams are edible but those shown had been killed when the died pearl was put in the shell. Then they were preserved in formaldehyde solution (embalming fluid) to make them look fresh.
Except eventually the oyster will be fully shucked though and all the pearls removed. They get to be an age where you can no longer get pearls out of them. Usually after 3-4 years the first pearl will be pulled. Then another pearl in -2 years. Then they are killed and shucked.
Echo!! I used to watch you like, 4-6 years ago! I remember watching your sketchbook tours and taking inspiration from your art style for mine when I was just starting. I rember watching you and I don't remember how many view and such you got but I remember watching you all the time. It's so cool to see you on my fyp again đ„°
Oh my god I used to watch you years ago I'm so happy I found your channel again
I wondered what that mysterious Twitter question was about! Anyways. I never really thought about this, but I guess vegans can't wear or purchase pearl jewelry because they are animal products?
Not a huge loss, IMO
Or buy it secondhand.
Some people take buying animal products more seriously than others and won't even do secondhand, but I think it depends.
Personally, I love the idea of people using secondhand/vintage fur coats rather than letting them go to waste because they already exist. But I hate to think of new ones being made and the demand that lets it keep happening. It can be complicated from the outside if you don't know where it came from.
Wonât purchase it. Itâs gross anyway, no big loss.
I'm not a vegan but in my eyes there's nothing wrong with fake ass pearls and I'm just as happy with some plastic ass party city pearls. đ
@@AlottaBoulchit you can buy glass ones too, some aren't that expensive. They look more realistic.
dang i remember watching an hour long video like these on youtube a while back, had no idea that it went all the way into tiktok mlms. capitalism has some very strange side effects.
So glad I googled this. Iâm new to TikTok and was completely baffled every time this ladyâs live of her shucking oysters for pearls kept coming up. I was sooooo confused. So thanks for the info!
I also recently fell down this same rabbit hole!!! Thank you for explaining it, I was so confused/fascinated!
I know this has nothing to do with this video but I love your Chanel and I've grown up on it .I started watching your Chanel when I was 12. in you introduced me to asexuality. And sparked my love for art. So thank you and keep up the good work
Hi I don't remember subbing to you but you are so pretty!!!! I love your eyes! I also watch these and the ones with the Chinese counterfeit makeup that gets scooped up for like 10 bucks a scoop
Oooooo that also sounds very satisfying. I see those asian jewelry/crystal scooping ones all the time
ECHO!! i came across one of your way older videos and it brought back an insane rush of nostalgia because i used to watch you so much when i was younger. your art was a huge inspiration to me :D im so glad to see you still uploading and doing decently on youtube
Aaa I was subscribed to you when I was much younger but eventually my content tastes changed, I often wondered how you were doing these days, so seeing this video on my home page was a lovely surprise!
