This time on THE IDENT REVIEW, we pay our respects to one of the most established satellite channels, that has kept us entertained for nearly 40 years. With the announcement that it will be replaced in September, we look back on several idents from the long history, of SKY ONE!
Launching as Satellite Television in 1982, Sky made its way to the UK in 1983, before gaining the Sky Channel moniker in 1984. After renaming itself to Sky One in 1989, the channel and Sky Network as a whole really began to expand in popularity. Hosting several shows that had long been American exclusives, and providing viewers with high-quality entertainment. But in 2021, Sky One is to be retired for the brand new Sky Showcase. So join me, as we look at a wide selection of nearly 40 years worth of Sky One idents...

Thanks for tuning into the longest episode of the Ident Review!
If you enjoyed it, leave a like, share around with your pals, and subscribe to the channel for more ident content!
sky one will turn into sky showcase this year
Your Welcome
I remember the 2004 idents getting panned by some critics due to the logo design. "Is it Sky One or Sky Onc?" was one of them.
So long, Sky One. I’ll always remember watching The Simpsons on you. That new channel has potential, yet some may clammer for your return. We bid you goodnight.
You mean goodbye, Edcola
@@jayhe1037 yes Jay
I was sad to
Another stellar episode pal! It's a shame to see Sky One go really, I can't see its successor doing anything remotely as good in terms of style, but I'm welcome to be surprised.
In terms of these idents, I mean I very much have vivid memories of seeing the 2002 style in my youth (mainly thanks to childhood hype surrounding the 300th episode of the Simpsons lmao) but I don't think anything really tops the Tombstones looking back. For the modern era though, definitely the first "1" in 2008 too, those were awesome. Never gelled with the current idents at all.
But yeah. RIP Sky One. Been a privilege knowing ya.
The 90s disappear further into history. If you ever saw a Sky One ident then, or a Simpsons episode not on BBC, either your parents were loaded or for those of us in NI you were visiting a relative or otherwise on holiday in the Republic, and were watching on cable. The week's holiday in Dublin every year for me meant watching Sky One with breakfast! How exotic! I remember watching Blockbusters on the channel one year when arriving at the caravan park.
Amazing idents, a window into an alien world across the Atlantic, and sometimes the Pacific, too (Australia), and one of the biggest reasons why The Simpsons has lasted as long as it has. Truly the end of a TV era. Sky One. Take a bow.
Fun Fact: The last 2008 Sky One idents shown (the one where the man is floating wrapped in pieces of the 1) is actually an ident themed of the American tv show “LOST”. That guy is one of the characters from the show, and the 1 is in place of the big reactor from the show bunker!
What about the ‘Fringe’ Ident
We will miss you, Sky One!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭
8:42 - it's the ident equivalent of the "how do you do, fellow kids" meme.
I'm pretty sure the 1993 or 1995 one had a variant where Bart Simpson would appear on top of the "ONE" playing a guitar, then dived off.
(Usually seen in the middle of that Sunday double-bill of the Simpsons!)
I remember when Cablelink started carrying Sky One (along with Super Channel and a few other weird ones) in Ireland back around 1991/92 when I was about 10 years old. It felt so futuristic and world-bridging...
I'll miss Sky One/1 so much this is where I watched An Idiot Abroad and The Simpsons for the first time and I've never laughed so much in my life
Don't worry, you'll see it all again only it's now called Sky Max
@@robertcomer2767no it’s called Sky Showcase, Sky Max was what they rebranded Sky Two into
@@robertcomer2767it’s called Sky showcase
Nothing will ever beat the 1989-1992 idents. The style and the music made you want to be part of the SKY ONE world.
i love these idents reviews
dont stop making these, theyre amazing
"soon to be retired" sky one quote gave me chills
It’s a shame Sky One is going away, but as the saying goes “This too shall pass.” Everything will have a start and an end. At least it existed, and that’s what’s most important. I hope Sky finds success with their use of what’s essentially category channels as instead of a traditional channel. I hope someone records the channels final moments as well, that’s valuable history XD
Rest well, Sky One. You’ll definitely be remembered by millions.
Underrated comment
Sky max has the same programming so it’s basically sky two
Fab ident review as always Adam! I first got Sky in ‘95, so I never saw anything before the tombstones. Shocked that they’re getting rid of Sky 1 ☹️. I hope someone uploads the closure.
Thank you Jenny! Glad you enjoyed it 😊 I'm sure there will be someone who'll capture the big moment!
I swear if someone doesn’t record it, that’s some heavy history lost to time XD
The closure was underwhelming imo. It just went straight to Sky Max.
Being an avid viewer of the Simpsons (starting off in 2020) I saw the domino Sky One ident every single time it was about to start, it was literally the only one I could remember. And though I thought I'd get really tired of it, the SFX used is appealing and cosy, especially considering what would pop up next.
Good Ident Review episode, Adam! It was very interesting to see ident batches I've really never seen before and your thoughts on it. Sad that Sky One is being phased out soon, even if it didn't need to be.
I’ve been watching the Simpsons since 1999 I was 2 yrs old
The Simpsons will still be on Sky.
I think it will be on Sky Showcase.
Or you can still watch on Disney+
@@clarkejoseph49 Even after Comcast bought Sky over unsuccessfully outbidding Disney for 21st Century Fox?
I'll definetily miss Sky One because it was the only channel where I'd sit down and watch The Simpsons or Futurama. Great review, as always. One day, I want to make an ident review show just like this(im obbsessed with idents). RIP Sky One (1982-2021)
As always, great video Adam!
Sky One 1982-2021 (R.I.P.)
The Tombstone style was from before we got Sky in my house but it does remind me of going round my neighbors to watch the channel or when I was on holiday that had a ‘TV room’
The ‘dish’ logo and the square logo of the 90s are my eras. Haven’t lived in a house with Sky in since 2011 ish though so don’t have much nostalgia for the others.
Looking at all of these I definitely prefer where the ‘one’ is written rather than the numeral.
R.I.P
Sky One
1980-2021
Back in the 90s when I was in high school, I always felt lucky that my family had Sky One as it would show TV shows months before they broadcast on terrestrial TV like friends, i felt i was ahead of the game and loved satellite TV. Now decades on, I feel sky channels and TV channels in general are just old and nothing like streaming today. When I see TV channels, it feels like so old school.
I used to be so jealous of anyone who had Sky back then. I’m a huge fan of Friends and always had to wait until they showed it on Channel 4.everyone who had Sky got to watch it earlier.
I still say BSB should've gotten a fairer shot.
Excellent review, found myself agreeing with your summary of every one
*AMAZING* Ident Review once again!
Do you know what? Those Sky One idents are really brilliant, especially the 1989 ident! And... oh my god, this is probably one of - if not - _the longest Ident Review you've ever did!_ (Along with VPRO Idents!) I even can't pick a favourite ident out of Sky One, but I guess it would probably be the 1989 ident, as the graphics and animation are very good for the time. And... wait. WHAT?! Sky One will be retired and get replaced with Sky Showcase?!
🌎 *No!*
That's a very big shame indeed! I can't believe that Sky One will get retired! The other Sky UK channels like Sky Two and Sky Three also got rebranded! This is so sad! Rest in peace to Sky Channel/Sky One (1984-2021)!
Lmao.
Sky Two - Sky Replay (2020)
Sky Three - Pick (2011)
7:17 is the one I remember and love the most
These take me back. My family didn't get Sky until 1996 so the Tombstone ident (and its variants for the other Sky channels) will always be my favourite. I watched so much Star Trek during that time. The 1998 ident just makes me think of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Friends.
Lovely sky one idents as usual.
Love your channel. Idents have always fascinated me. Could you do Sky News through the ages when you get a chance.
aww yes, the channel that brought us yonderland.
37 years of Sky One cool video Adam
Great video the idents video6 are the highlight of your channel love it.
Thanks pal!
@@AdamMartyn When is Nickelodeon Idents Part 2 coming out?
Sky one I will never forget you I can just watch your community idents and adverts
The 2008-11 idents (The ones with the blue glass shards) are the best ones in my opinion and were used for Sky 2 (Which used green slime) and Sky 3 (Purple smoke) as well and should also be reviewed.
P.S. I think you should also review the Sky Movies idents from 2011-16 as it was the same ident over and over but would stop at a certain genre of film depending on which one you’re watching. (Except for the Christmas variant and the Disney one which is either Disney related memorabilia or ends on the Disney castle)
The 08-11 set are gorgeous 👌
@@AdamMartyn It looks like a set of Rejected Channel 4 idents
@@DavidDoom95 Channel 4 had excellent idents in 2008, but the Sky 1 idents are very visually pleasing
Hey AMTV Rewiew the Sky 1 Ident called ‘Fringe’
I will miss sky one but sky showcase and sky max seem good

The 1997 idents are the most 90s thing I’ve ever seen 😂
Got to think about the time though, turn of the millennium coming up and start of digital broadcasting
Yeah, but it's a shit right?
shame they're getting rid of it, i have many fond memories of watching a league of their own, the simpsons, and friends on sky one.
It was fun, the new channels sound kinda cool, and i'm excited to see them!
farewell, sky one!
The Little alien ident I loved but it didn't seem very Sky when you compare it to others. I loved 2008 🥳🥳🥳🥳 Great video my love ❤❤❤
Thanks lovely one! Glad you enjoyed it 😁😘❤❤
Yep Adam, That’s a great choice of a channel nearly to be replaced by another channel! And also it’s pretty weird it’s the second longest Ident Review ever!
And also, Sky Replay will also end with Sky One. But Sky Replay will turn into Sky Showcase. Sky One will turn into another channel called “Sky Max”, featuring most panel shows (A League Of Their Own, Never Mind The Buzzcocks reboot). Most of the comedy shows on Sky One will go onto Sky Comedy. But “The Simpsons” will go onto Sky Showcase.
i'm pretty sure sky showcase and max are in reverse
I think Sky Replay may still be available.
@@theothercd Oops! I forgotten! You were right.
And also, @@clarkejoseph49, I heard from a video that Sky Replay will end on the same day.
@@theothercd Nevermind. Sky Max did replace Sky One.
Oh man, I remember seeing those 2002 ones showing everyday before the live feed Sky One had of David Blaine's Above The Below
i love this video a lot.
Ireland began receiving Sky Channel (Sky One) around 1987 via cable television. Ireland had cable television since the late 60's / early 70's, receiving British channels (BBC 1 Northern Ireland, BBC 2 and Ulster Television (Channel 4 came later) or BBC 1 Wales, BBC 2 and HTV Wales (S4C came later), depending on where you lived and what channels the cable operator broadcasted). Around 1987, certain cable companies, especially in cities such as Dublin, Cork and Waterford, began showing satellite channels such as Sky Channel, Super Channel, Screensport, Lifestyle and The Children's Channel. Others came along later. According to a Sky Channel Network Summary from June 1987, Ireland had more viewers watching the channel than Britain did, with just over 813,000 viewers in Ireland as oppose to only 688,000 viewers in Britain. You can see the summary on this video here around the 50 minute mark:
czcams.com/video/sdl1xW7--WA/video.html
What's Super Channel?
@@rogerdarthwell5393 Super Channel was a Pan-European satellite channel, just like Sky Channel, but was more focused on British programmes from the BBC and ITV, where as Sky Channel were more focused on American programmes. Super Channel opened in 1987, taking over the transponder for Music Box, a 24 hour a day music channel. Some of their programmes went over to Super Channel. They continued to broadcast British programmes until the early 1990's, when they were taken over by NBC from America and the channel was renamed NBC Super Channel. I think they showed mainly documentaries and news programmes at this time.
@@europa2000man This is so cool! It's a pity it no longer exists
R.I.P Sky One!
Sky Atlantic has a lot to blame in the demise of Sky One. But it has been clear nobody cared about it for the last 20 years. With any luck Viacom CBS might do us all a favour and close down MTV. Shame to see two powerhouses of the 90's are now channels nobody cares about.
Very appropriate video, given the news.....
It was only a matter of time before it appeared!
@@AdamMartyn Indeed
Can you do the Sky Uno (Sky One’s italian version) ident review?
I mainly watched Sky One between 2001 and 2006. You were right, the Idents are absolutely lacklustre. I didn't like them one bit and the Idents showing up just meant the LOOooooong commercial breaks were finally over!
I'm sad I never got to see SkyOne during the more 'exclusive' era of the 80s and 90s. Truth be told, we had no need of it back then, but you could tell the Idents back then were meant to tell you you were about to see something special or you had access to something special. The later eras of Sky, when it was finally more accessible in more households, I swear they normally just dumped content into as many channels as possible just to sell more advertising space and keep more eyes on the screens/channels. I suppose it worked initially...but...
so sad to see sky one go. Sky one was first channel I watched when i got Sky (SD) back in 90s. First show i wathced was simpsons. Was such a great alternative to bbc and did like how programs like dream team and other shows. It will be missed
Farewell, Sky One. May your legacy live on within Sky Showcase.
I had SKY since 1984 when it was SKY CHANNEL and renamed SKY 1 in 89 so why are SKY not saying this is a rename this time
@Adam Martyn Please note that both Sky One's musical themes from 1989 and 1993 were composed by Gari Communications in Nashville, TN - United States of America, although you may prefer much more the music that they've used in 1989 to '93 than it's sucessor, which sometimes is also my case with most satellite and cable television idents from the past decades.
What is your opinion about this?
Swindon (Swindon Cable) was the first town to air Sky Channel, then Milton Keynes by one week. The original ident is the best. I am being nostalgic I know. The original ident brings up a lot of TV memories :-)
You got to remember Rupert Murdoch is Australian, Australian TV networks (9, 7 and 10) are very American in style. It doesn't really work in the UK which is why they dropped those early 90s program intros, or so I heard.
Does anyone have the other Animaktion Sky One ident with the spaceman looking through his binoculars at his space pod and jumps onto sprays cans going into his pod? I’ve been looking for that idents for ages
18:11 that ident was made to play before the program Lost.
Request MTV UK 2011 idents
surprisingly interesting
About that 1993 ident... So Sky One was their main, general entertainment channel with the latest US shows. Among them, Beverly Hills 90210, which was a massive hit back in the day. The 1993 ident theme still has the main meloy from the past, but the remix very much reminds me of the 90210 title theme. Probably not a coincidence as it was considered a trendy and hip show, much like what Sky One was aiming for.
PS: Ahh, the good old days. Before being encrypted, Sky One was the main English language channel available throughout Europe, and it had content we didn't get in Hungary until years later. I used to watch Sky One all the time as a kid and i credit it for going from almost failing English class at high school to majoring in English years later.

Eutelsat II-F1 the satellite that carried Sky Channel(13 degrees east) required at least a 1 metre satellite dish(you could get away with a 80cm if the weather was good or at night) in the UK. This satellite was joined and later replaced by Hotbird around 1996.
Ah yes my favourite channel *S K Y O N C*
The animated sky one varient from 1998 was used for the kids programming under the name animaktion
Adam Martyn, I hear Sky One is closing down this year and getting replaced.
Adam Martyn You missed The Sky one Ident Boxes From 2008
How has it been a year since sky1 closed
1993 reminds me on the 1992/1993 ident of the German language RTL-TV Service
I wonder if the late 90s ones, just from how varied they are, might have been dependent on the context of what was being shown at the time?
What happened to the Discord?
Clearly in 1997/98 those who were actually responsible for these were replaced, and the new guys had absolutely no idea what they were doing.
The "1" tombstone variant launched more or less the same time as they launched Sky 2.
oh yea, looking through TV Ark, there is one set of idents that you've forgotten but I don't blame you, it's just a bunch of waves with the Sky One logo on top. Lazy and Bland.
I like the box variant of the 2008 idents not shown
That first Sky One logo that was made in the USA made satellite television so different to what we'd be used to previously. You knew you were watching something different and after that some of them were utter rubbish
19:20 reminds me of BBC 2 “personality” idents
Anyone else think that Adam should do a collab with Bob the fish aka Applemask?
I was just thinking of Applemask when this came up; obviously you also know what's coming from his Patreon feed? 😉
UH! WHAT THE HECK? I SPEND THE WHOLE DAY WITH YOU SKY 1,INCLUDING CHANNEL 4,INCLUDING BBC 2 AS WELL! BBC 2 WAS LAUNCHED IN 2000'S
AND PLUS! sky one will close down on 2021
I love sky 1
The 2011 idents' soundtrack sounds like The Fear by Lily Allen! She could’ve sued Sky with Fuckloads of Diamonds
almost gone. 8 hours.
Huge mistake by Sky to get rid of Sky 1. Now it's Showcase or Max or something?? Who was the "genius", not, to come up with that, way way way better alternative? I think a lot of Sky customers feel disconnected now, it's a product now that nobody can relate to.
☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹I AM SO SAD THAT SKY 1 IS GOING AWAY!
Why on earth does the music of the 2011 idents remind me of "The Fear" by Lily Allen (love that song!). It's like they couldn't come up with something more original.

THIS REBRAND SKY 1 BREAKS THE WHITE BACKGROUND AND IN PRISMA3D I MADE SKY 1 IN A QUICKSAND FONT AND YOU CAN MAKE SKY 1 IN PRISMA3D
For So Long Time Ago In 1982! sky one was launched in that year! In 2008! sky one terrorismed you,and look at sky one's clothes they are amazing, they commurted sky one for a long time but in 2016 sky 1 is like a 1 in 2016,in 2017 sky one was lettered form of itself,I can't help it with loving sky one,on channel 4 simpsons ident was in pieces
If Sky 1 Was Made In Prisma3D And Find Out That Sky 1 IN 2017 SKY 1 WAS LETTERED FORM A SUPPORED TO A SKY ONE AS ROMAN NUMBER AND SKY ONE WITH A NICE LOOK AT THE SAME PLACE AT THE TOP OF SKY ONE'S BIRTHDAY AND SKY NETWORK CREATED SKY ONE IN 1982 AND TO BE HONEST I LOVE SKY ONE SO MUCH ❤❤SKY ONE IS THE BEST CHANNEL SO MUCH!!!!!!!
I have no idea why they decided to change Sky One into Sky Showcase? Sure, they never had the best content. Sure in its last few years, it just became a dumping ground for Simpsons re-runs. But if you really dissect Sky One, you’ll find it’s actually way better than Sky Showcase.
The first 2016 one mentions NCTs and that’s only Irish I think?
Why are they getting rid of sky one there's not many of the old sky channels left from the 80s and 90s s as it is.
I suppose it's the ol' winds of change!
Only Discovery Channel & MTV left of the OG cable/Sat channels that started in the 80s
