City drivers on a budget need look no further than the Toyota Aygo. Toyota's small car is great to drive, will fit in nearly any parking space and is very reliable. The engine is tiny but it's more than capable of battling it out in the cut and thrust of town traffic. There isn't much boot space, but the low list price and running costs make up for this. Identical in all but badges and some exterior body panels to Peugeot's 107 and Citroen's C1, it's worth shopping around to see which offers the best deal.

Had my 5 year old Aygo Platinum for just over two months and I'm really pleased with it. Steering CAN be a bit vague but as long as you're positive with your inputs it handles well, especially as the springs are so firm. Engine lacks power but what it does have it delivers well (with a great exhaust note) and more than makes up for it with superb fuel economy. Well-equipped for its price range and very, very, very cheap to run (tax only £20 for 12 months and insurance group 1). Factory-fitted stereo is excellent and even has an aux input for an iPod or MP3 player. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for an economical and reliable but ultimately driveable small car.

Super easy to understand as a vehicle. Can’t go wrong with it apart from the fact it sways side to side in the high winds😂

The main problem for me is probably the small engine size, as a car full with your friends is significantly harder to drive especially going up hill. Because it struggles to gain speed! :)

im 6"6 and still fit comfortably in my aygo... The things like metal door panels, small boot etc are all planned ways to save on production costs therefore saving you money when you come to buy it. I even recently went on a trip to a concert about 3 hours away with friends in it, even then I felt for what you pay, the car is still very good!! one thing I will say is it does become very sluggish when you have a full cabin so if you are wanting to transport lots of people then maybe a more powerful car would be better... but for a 3 cylinder 990cc engine, i think it handles itself very well with very little noise. Ideal for young drivers!

Purely out of interest, how do you (or did you if you don't still have the car) fit comfortably in it? I'm only 5'8 and I can just about drive my Aygo comfortably with the seat all the way back. I usually set it to the 2nd rearmost notch so I'm not stretching too much for the clutch, but any further forward and my knee hits off the steering wheel, even when it's as high as it'll go. I can't envision anyone 6ft or over being able to drive it in comfort, but clearly I'm wrong! :D

    • @ARMALON87
      @ARMALON87 Před 7 lety +4

      Still do =)
Dunno, man, I just fit. I don't even move my seat all the way back and I feel and control the clutch better. Of course there isn't much space behind me, only a child or a small girl can fit. But this car is quite tall, so my head doesn't touch a ceil as in other cars. Though I haven't tried any other cars much I can tell, that in BMW X5 is much less space for a driver because of these "inflated" seats, all the place for a driver was taken away)
Anyway, it's my first car, I like it and don't wanna change even if my friends sometimes laugh when I sit in this car, because I'm tall and somehow fit in this small car)

TRASHoftheTITANS still got it, had it for 3 1/2 years now and still does the job perfectly. Been on multiple fairly long trips with it with a full cabin and all passengers 6" or over. Granted it wasn't easy but you make good with what you have don't you? Car is a favourite with the family nowadays as I'm at home less and less.

Theres so many of these (and c1, 107) on the roads. They were/are obviously a good car. They have almost taken over from the K11 Micra and the mk1 Yaris as the small simple Japanese cars that cost almost nothing to run and maintain.

Owning a C1 which is pretty much the same car along with the 107, the 3 cylinder engine has actually rather surprised me especially if I make good use of the gears when getting up to high speed. I live right in the middle of the country, & have done motorway & journeys to the coast a fair times with a 3 other people in, also a small folded wheelchair which just fits in the boot. Where only really in bother when we encounter a gradient but on the flat it will stick at 70mph pretty much fine even with a full cabin, however it's definitely not brilliant & at high speed noise is little issue & the ride can be a little bothering if the surface isn't exactly smooth

My mum bought it as a 2nd car in 2011 but she just drove about 18.000km withhin the first 11 years. Within 1 1/2 years i pushed it to 45.000km now. A few weeks ago i pushed it from Northern Germany over Salzburg, Munich, Innsbruck and Meran until Milan and from there over switzerland back to northern Germany. 2.500km in 8 days and i never had any issues at all. I spend about 200€ on Gas and i managed to go from the country of Liechtenstein in the Alps until Paderborn where im from with 1 full ration of Gas.
That is about 620km. I sometimes drove a bit faster but with driving around 120km/h i can drive up to 700km what is crazy

The Aygo/C1/107 came out in 2005. That is 8 years ago now, so rather unsurpricingly it has been outclassed in many ways by never competitors. The VW UP not only has a more polished dash, it has a much niver interior is general, it is more comfortable and refined to drive, has more space in the trunk and a much better safety rating. So Toyota/Citroen/Peugeot need to bring out a new micro-car soon to get back in the game in this class.

OK, Let's be honest the only real quirk of these triplets, small and cheap car. Is the absurd positioning of the window switches. One on each side, it's all fine, until you need to use the opposite side!
Damn! Peugeot/Citroen for decades managed this the most simple way. Placing the switches in the center, it also save wire, etc. and as such cost. So it can be done. No big surprise here.
Other than that the triplets are excellent vehicles for what they were done. A cheap and easy vehicle that will not break your wallet either to buy, drive or maintain. Impeccable! ;-)

I've had a 2012 Fire for 2 years and covered a fair few miles in it. I think a lot of you in the comments are looking at the car through rose-tinted specs if I'm honest. The ride IS harsh, and you must be driving on the some brilliant roads if you think otherwise. The combination of a hard ride and small wheels means every small bump is jarring, and the whole car shakes around if you hit an uneven patch. As for the steering...it works, and that's about as good as it gets. Mine has been mechanically reliable apart from the clutch going at 33,000 miles, but has had various issues with corrosion, dodgy electrics and water ingress. The gearbox is truly awful: notchy, clunky, resistive to block changes. Sometimes it takes 3-4 attempts to get it into reverse - not good.
All that said, there is a lot to like about the Aygo. Despite odd gearing, the engine is fantastic. Lots of mid-range power, high rev limiter, and sounds like a little v6 once you get it going. The car is by no means "fast", but doesn't feel underpowered if you drive it properly. The interior is well put together, the back seats are spacious and very usable for a city car, and it's very cheap to maintain.
Imo it's a very "meh" car. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. If it is a car you truly love, that's great, but you need to keep a perspective. It isn't a jack-of-all-trades, only car you'll ever need, etc, but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be a mass-produced, white-goods city car for A to B journeys, and it does that well enough.

Couldn't agree more mate! I have been subscribing to WhatCar? since 1996, and recently some of their reviews have been really bizarre, the VW Up being a prime example. They seem to have become VERY VW biased. They say the Up is stylish...really??? It looks literally like a box on wheels. Only the top spec model, with everything body coloured and alloy wheels, looks decent, where as even a base model Aygo/C1 looks excellent. I'm willing to bet too the Aygo/C1 will definitely eek better mpg too.

The Toyota build quality comment is odd, the Citroen and Peugeot are made on the same production line. The comment about noise and rear windows is wearing thin with me, only two people 99% of the time go in my 107 which is the same as the Toyota, you also pay more for the Toyota, that bit was not covered in the test.

I wonder if they will come out with a replacement with this car. I know its a joint project with Peugeot and Citroen. Anyway its been out since 05, I assume a redesign is up soon. Unless they plan to phase out the car. The Yaris is getting bigger, this car is under that, then they have the iQ, which I think you should review, unless you already have.

Bought a new Agyo 'Go' in 2011. When I bought it I knew I would run it until it belongs in the bin, or the nearest council estate on fire. It's still going strong with 94k miles with only a replaced exhaust around 80k. Totally boring car, but boring predictable running costs, which suits me :).

I've driven both and there's honestly no contest - the Aygo is good but its noisy, uncomfortable, feels really cheap inside - not to mention less practical and only has 3 star Euro NCAP. It's still a good car but its a 2005 design and it feels like it!

@bnschmdt The toyota aygo isn't available as a diesel. There's no reason to be so keen on diesel though. All european governments have endorsed diesel cars throughout the past 30 years and as a result, the US has, by far, much cleaner air than western europe.
