I've always had a weird fascination with El Paso and I don't really even know why. I live in South Dakota and I've never been anywhere near Texas. I guess maybe it's because it tends to fly under the radar a little bit for a city of its size. Most people probably don't realize how large it actually is.

I have been thru El Paso several times hauling racing cars back & forth across the country. Now retired, this summer I got to for the first time set foot in down town. The bus I was riding to visit my daughter stopped to refuel & change driver. Had lunch in a small corner cafe where the food was good and the locals were friendly. Even the lone border agent at the bus station was helpful. I would love to go back sometime for a proper visit 😅

As a person born and raised in El Paso and spent most of his life in the city and worked as a LEO there, the stat on safest city is manipulated. But I will also say that the cartels want to keep it safer or have the illusion of being safer, as it is one of the largest ports for its many illegal activities.
I do however like the facts you did present as an overview, a bit short and I feel a lot was missed. I missed the mountains and the views... the smell of the rain there, and so much more. I don't miss the lower wages, or the fact most jobs require or want employees who know Spanish and English, in that order, I also don't like how non-diverse the city is. I do miss the Food, the Best Mexican Food anywhere. I agree with many of the comments below. For me El Paso is far too Brown, and too land locked/secluded for me. It will forever be my home, and I will always hold fond memories of it, but I moved away for Greener pastures.

When I was young, I loved El Paso, it was beautiful, clean, and traffic was easy going, that was in the 70's even 80's. When we got into the 90's, it was growing but not so bad yet, but in the 2000, it grew way too much and became nothing but way too big and way too much traffic, now in 2022, the traffic is outrageous, and I wish I could move to a smaller less populated town. I never was a big city gal! 🤷🏼‍♀️
For those who want to see the older and prettier El Paso, watch THE 1983 movie "Lone Wolf McQuade", with Chuck Norris, it takes place in all areas of El Paso, and you'll see the beautiful parts, and how gorgeous we were in the older days before my city became too big, too overcrowded, and TOO MUCH TRAFFIC!!

El Paso is not what many people think it is, and it might be safe to some. But there is plenty of gun violence nowadays as that is the way Greg Abbott legalize open carry.
This video is using Old footage of El Paso, it don't show any of the latest developments.

It's too bad that it sounds like you were in only certain areas - there are many areas here that are really lovely. There aren't any bars on any of homes in the neighborhood where I live and we all take care of our yards. And the restaurants and food trucks offer absolutely amazing food! El Paso is just like any other town in that there are some not-so-nice places as well as great places. If you ever visit El Paso again, please let some locals take you around - there are amazing things to see and do here!
