In this Our Changing Climate climate change video, I look at how hemp could save the world from climate change. Obviously, there’s no one solution to climate change, but hemp and hemp cultivation could unlock a lot of alternatives to industries that currently emit tons of CO2 every year. Hemp is not only beneficial for the soil, but it also sequesters a substantial amount of carbon dioxide. Also, hemp is one of the fastest-growing crops. Hemp has over 25,000 uses which means, if grown right, hemp could replace everything from cotton to concrete to plastic and sequester millions of tons of carbon in the process. Hemp is truly a miracle crop and should be seen as a plant that’s sustainable and a viable solution to countless problems we now face in the climate crisis.

The funny thing is it's not just this video about hemp's amazing uses. So many problems or challenges we face are solved through available and developing technologies. Food production through vertical farming and regenerative ag, clean or lab-grown meat, housing through automation/3D printing technologies, clean and abundant water through desalination plants, clean and renewable energy through geothermal, hydro, solar and wind. And on and on it would go. Right now the problem isn't what can be done, it's the socio-economic factors that slow it down and prevent it from happening sooner. We're struggling in a system that isn't sustainable or healthy, yet we keep trying to solve problems with a system that is unable to solve certain problems because of its incentives and structure. It's time to transition away from what may have served us at a time before the technological revolution, but now is just holding us back. There is no real change without system change.

Logging it and planting a new tree (eats more carbon out of the air) there is much more better idea. I live in a country where it's 90% covered forests. Exactly. It has plenty of uses but what people don’t realize is we probably have other things that are better for that use and for cheaper. That doesn’t make it very much of a use tho cause why would we start making the worse and more expensive one. There’s definitely reasons, beyond demonization of the plant, that we don’t use it for the things that it can do. Why would we plant something for concrete when we can just mix cement sand gravel and water together and have ourselves much stronger concrete. Same with clothes. Yes we can use it to make clothes, but is that actually something we should do and something that makes economic sense. If not, then that use isn’t going to be used and therefore isn’t much of use at all.
