The Real Trap of Consumerism
Support Our Changing Climate on Patreon: www.patreon.com/OurChangingClimate
In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at the real trap of consumerism. Specifically, I dive into why consumerism is not actually the real cause of exploitation and the climate crisis, but instead a symptom of capitalism. Capitalist overproduction drives companies and corporations to create false needs and desires, which leads to overconsumption. We need to shift our attention away from consumerism and overconsumption and towards overproduction.

    It's one thing to say that the global supply of the energy source known as food is large enough to feed everyone if distributed more equitably---to get a rough idea whether or how true this is, just divide the estimated global supply of calories by the human population---and entirely another to vacuously suggest (at 16:40) that the same holds for ALL renewable energy sources! It's a shame to see an otherwise great video tarnished by hand-wavy nonsense.

    Saying "we need to stop doing capitalism" and "this is how we get the ball rolling to stopping capitalism" are two different things. So far I haven't seen any leftist channels talk about how in any real depth or with any regularity, and when they do it's almost always platitudes/generic advice like "join a political party" or "start a worker cooperative" or "organize" or "start/join a union." They don't help anyone because those aren't actually "how" suggestions; they're just "do this one thing and cast your thoughts and prayers to the heavens that something will change" suggestions. A lot of people who hear "organize" or similar things don't know where to start. Thinking about it is overwhelming, and based on the severe lack of organization and movements to organize it seems that most people quit before they ever begin. And that's a massive deficiency on the left. It's obviously important to tell people THAT things are broken and why, but it's equally if not more important to tell them what they can actually do about it and HOW they can do it. "Join/create a union/cooperative/party/etc" doesn't tell them either of those things, it just tells them "be part of something." On that note, I have a blog linked to my profile that is all about what individuals in an atomized neoliberal capitalist society can do to get the ball of democratization and organizing rolling, starting with "just little ol' me and a little bit of time to socialize with the people around me." It goes through how to start, how to appeal to/incorporate rural communities, why I suggest this approach to organizing and democratizing, the principles and goals, some supporting theory (it's not a theory-based blog because theory doesn't tell you how to do things), how to start building the foundations of a democratic economy, and how to expand the organization to larger scales while maintaining/protecting democracy. For now it can only be accessed through my profile (I don't have a website, so it's just a wix starter for now), but if anyone has a site of their own, feel free to plagiarize the bajeebies out of it. I don't need credit or anything. All I care about is that it is useful...and isn't hidden behind a paywall.

    It seems as you want to change the game within the game. Changing a system by the institutions already in place, which are corrupted. There has to be a "demolition" first, before any kind of change. Look out your window and leave the screen and you will realize that in this planet all change takes place with the cycling of what already is. It is not a production line but a circle. To change what we have, a new way of being must arise first, most likely triggered by an unforseen and forceful or painful event that will leave no option but to change and evolve to something else. In other words an environmental trigger. Until everybody cannot do anything else but to worry about real needs and relearn what is basic, there will be no change and that, unfortunately, always comes with pain.

  • @pascalxus
    @pascalxus Před 10 hodinami

    Supply comes because of Demand, not the other way around. capitalism merely provides you with what you demand, nothing more. Have some common sense: overproduction can NOT continue if consumers don't buy it. everything starts with consumers. how could you come to any other conclusion? My theorey is that people just want someone to blame for all their useless purchases. How many people do you know that buy a brand new iphone every 3 years, regardless of the fact that the older version is just as good as the new one? Well, I'm proof that you don't need to do that. I haven't purchased anything useless for years! and no ad or marketing scheme is going to change my mind. Oh and Ads. Ads do NOT create need in me. Sure, maybe for millions of other hapless souls. But, i define my own needs. and no ad is going to be able to change that. maybe that's why i feel the vast majority of ads are completely misguided and even strange.

    • @JP-fb8ni
      @JP-fb8ni Před 7 hodinami

      Interesting take, but let's look at this from a different angle. You say supply comes from demand and that capitalism just gives us what we want. But consider this: does it really? Capitalism isn't just about meeting needs; it's about creating them. Companies, in fact, spend billions on marketing to convince us we need the latest gadget or the newest fashion. They manufacture desires as much as they manufacture products. If people truly only bought what they needed, half of the stuff on the market wouldn't even exist. Think about it: why do people buy a new iPhone every few years? It's not because their old one stopped working. It's because they're constantly bombarded with ads telling them the new model is better, faster, more desirable. Marketing actually creates a sense of inadequacy with what we already have. It's a cycle that keeps the profits rolling in for corporations, not because people inherently want these things, but because they're manipulated into believing they do. Your idea that ads don't affect you is also interesting, but ads aren't just about direct influence. They actually shape our culture and our perceptions subtly over time. You might think you're immune, but the fact that these ads keep coming means they're working on a large scale. Even if you don't buy into it, millions do, and that's by design. You also blame people for their useless purchases, but isn't it more accurate to blame the system that encourages and rewards such behaviour? Capitalism thrives on overproduction and overconsumption. It's not about fulfilling needs; it's about expanding profit. So, while you might feel immune to the advertising machine, remember, it's not just about you as an individual. It's about the broader system and how it shapes consumer behaviour for the benefit of a few people.

    • @pascalxus
      @pascalxus Před hodinou

      @@JP-fb8ni Who is to blame? the ads, or the values in people which make them susceptible to those ads? I would argue it's a problem with the values of society. as long as we value keeping up with the Jonses more than basic needs, we'll always have problems regardless of whether there is ads. Ads/Marketing are just a symptom of a much larger problem in society: lack of good values that appreciate and recognize and elevate basic needs (food, water, shelter, land). Ads only work because of the thought process in people's brains. People are so hyper focused on what others think of them, even obsessed with what other people think of them. Just take a moment and think about how twisted that is. Individuals are thinking about what others are supposedly thinking about them and the conclusion of all this thinking is that they buy products which supposedly makes others think greater of them? it's no wonder ads can manipulate them. Living with such mindset will do individual great harm, regardless of whether ads are present. Do you still think "ads" are the problem? capitalism doesn't Force you to buy anything. no one is holding a gun to your head. if you grew up with the same values I grew up with, you would find it very easy to resist ads ( the vast majority of ads aren't even attractive to me, they actually repel me). If everyone grew up with my upbringing ads would be completely useless and cease to exhist. the problem is not the ads, the problem is people aren't learning the right values while they're growing up. It's a cultural problem/ scoietal value problem. Ads are just a symptom. And with regards to profits. Personally, I only buy things I really really need, with no regrets. So, if capitalism sells me something (even something that was advertised to me), I'm actually really greatful for that purchase because I ONLY buy things I really really need. Those needs are created by me, once again (food, water, shelter, land, or related). We need conscious consumers who are in tune with their true needs. Consumers who value basic needs over "keeping up with the jonses". Do that, and you'll never have to worry about poor ads. Starved of revenues all the useless products will go away, as will their advertising. Also, exposure to ads is completely at your discretion. The only time I get any ads at all is when I'm watching CZcams. If i look at the rest of my lifestyle, there's absolutely no ads.. There's no ads in my books, my garden, my grape vines, the compost bin, my lawn, the park, the library, the sheet music on my piano, or even inside my car on the way to work (radio is optional). If people are being bombarded with ads all the time, then there may be something seriously wrong with their lifestyle and how they fill their time.

    • @JP-fb8ni
      @JP-fb8ni Před 30 minutami

      @@pascalxusI get where you're coming from, but I think you're missing a crucial point about how capitalism operates. It's not just about individual values or upbringing; it's about the system itself and how it shapes society. You say it's a problem with the values in people, but where do you think those values come from? They're actually heavily influenced by the capitalist system that prioritises profit over human well-being. The constant push for more consumption isn't just about people wanting to keep up with the Joneses; it's driven by corporations that need to sell more to keep their profits up. They create and exploit insecurities to ensure people keep buying. You also mention ads are just a symptom, but they're actually a powerful tool of capitalism. They manipulate desires and create artificial needs. Even if you personally don't feel affected, the reality is that ads shape our culture and values in ways that go beyond individual choice. They create a consumer culture where people's worth is measured by what they own, not who they are. And capitalism might not force you to buy anything directly, but it creates an environment where not buying can feel like falling behind. It exploits and amplifies insecurities and desires. The idea that if everyone grew up with the same values as you, ads would be useless, also overlooks the fact that the capitalist system actively works to shape those values from a young age. And about living ad-free-sure, some can avoid ads more than others, but for many, especially those in urban areas or who rely on public services, ads are inescapable. They're in schools, public transport, and even in the digital spaces we use for work and social connections. The issue isn't just about individuals making better choices; it's about challenging a system that benefits from overproduction, overconsumption, and the exploitation of human desires. Until we address that, the cycle will continue, regardless of personal values.

    I think one of the biggest challenges is getting these things in motion from a true grassroots movement and less from government regulation, since at least half of the people have zero faith that the government has the interests of the people at heart (and not without reason). And also to get people to build a mutual, communal support network to provide for each other without being beholden to their paycheck to meet their needs. Food, water, shelter, power- they need to be able to have reliable access to that if they want to fight the system.

    I think that having a worker-led socialist economy would also result in products that are actually good quality, because the main focus wouldn't be to make more and more profit, but to actually build something that would be useful to people and the community. This could be good quality homes that aren't mansions that people would actually be able to afford and live in, or sustainable clothing rather than fast fashion.

    I think it's maddening that peoples priorities is having children rather than collectively coming together to change the state of the world. You'd think with social media it enables people to come together and to fight against the tyranny of the world, but it's ironically made people more disconnected.

    Also sure, companies wants profits. If everyone doesn't buy what's unethical, thus making unethical products unprofitable, no company will produce them. I wish ending climate change is that easy.

    Author Kimberly Latrice Jones gave an impassioned interview during the BLM protests pointing out how the poor is not helped by the rich flaunting their wealthy on social media and we fall over ourselves wanting to be like them, but we are so behind we’ll never catch up.

    Just remember that even if you don't monetize the channel yourself, CZcams will still place advertising on it. So you may as well monetize it and get your cut so you can continue to pay the bills.

    I'll be the cynic one. High prices and low wages IS the antidote against consumerism. You can't buy if you don't have money. Not even credit because banks won't lend.

      I agree if there is universal healthcare and higher education is affordable, not inflated to pay the price of a football coach for a team in the PAC-9/10 to the point he is the highest paid individual in my state (I will remain salty about it.)

    The actual goal probably not to combat and overthrown the capitalism. But our effort and commitment to campaign better life beyond capitalistic society. Improving the life through social values, science, and spiritualism that matter more than capital and materialism.

    As I grow older in this capitalist system, I think the solution lies in strengthening your will and power to say no. Even when they try to emotionally manipulate us into buying stuff we don’t need, we must not give in to the temptation because at the end of the day, it’s hard to stop being a consumer all together, so we must take the responsibility upon ourselves to be better consumers that exercise consciousness when we buy

      On a small scale this sounds like good advice, however it actually sounds very similar to how people think about dealing with climate change. That it is on us to reduce our carbon footprint rather than introducing legislation that would force the big companies to reduce theirs. The capitalists would largely be very happy with your solution because it would hardly affect their bottom line, because they have made it a very difficult thing that only a small percentage of people would do it.

      @@nickjwowrific pressing for legislations that will force corporations to reduce their carbon footprint would be the ultimate goal but so long as there’s consumer demand they don’t need to care because nothing’s really threatening their business, and unfortunately as you said only very few are willing to sacrifice being consumers for greater change. This is why nonprofits don’t achieve much other than exposing the harm these companies are causing but no matter how many signatures they collect these corporations never change their ways and never will as long as they have customers. There’s effort in sacrificing convenience for real change like boycotting these companies, but I don’t think we’re ready to assume that responsibility as a society with collective efforts yet and it seems like we never will
