That’s the prettiest car that Chrysler made in 1959. I really like the two toning. My great uncle had a new one, but he said that it was a lemon. He had such good luck with his ‘51 & ‘55. He never bought a Dodge again.

They only lasted about 3 years. Rust proofing did not exist to a full extent back then. Most people would have to get a new car every 3-5 years (which most had the money for) because of rust.

Wow! What a beautiful restoration...of my absolute favorite year Dodge. My dad was a lifer at Chrysler Corp. (43 yrs.)
and had new ones every 2 yrs. But he had a '58 and a '60. I was bummed because I 💘 loved the '59.
    (I was 11 yrs.old)
    A totally unique, 1 yr.
body style, and they didn't carry anything over in '60 except the roof. Not seen very often today...a real treat for me! Thanks.😊

I wrote to you about the '64-'66 Imperials , now it's the Dodge. Between the ages of 17 through 21 I Had a 1959 Dodge Coronet Super D-500 Lancer 2 door. The Super D-500 meant it was the 383 2x4 barrel engine and Lancer was the name Dodge used that meant hard top. I asked when buying the car if there was any information on the original owner, I'd never seen a Dodge equipped this way. Because my father knew every Chrysler product dealer in town well, and they knew me through him, they gave me the info. She was a wealthy lady in her late 30's-early 40's who was known to Chrysler as a "preferred customer", in other words, most anything you wanted on the car was okay to order. She was very specific in her order. She wanted the Coronet trim for the most part. That means a shorter trim piece at the start of the fin, which makes the fin look 5 inches longer, and also the chrome ribbed insert at the tail of the fin. The Coronet lower side trim is 1/2 the width of the Custom Royal, but she did order the stainless trim over the front wheelwell leading into the headlamp eyebrows, and they were the thicker Custom Royal brows. She also ordered it without the hood ornament and rear fender hash marks which gave the car a longer cleaner look and ordered Custom Suburban front fender emblems (just above the bumper)instead of the Coronet upper front fender emblems. It was painted the Chrysler off-white I love, with a full Custom Royal interior in red, white and black. It was amazing the number of people who thought it was a Chrysler 300 letter series. The list of options; Power steering, brakes, windows, 6 way power swivel seat, antennae, power self dimming inside mirror, signal seeking radio, remote control drivers outside mirror, variable speed wipers, heat and A/C, TorqueFlite trans, posi rear end, Highway patrol level heavy duty suspension, Auto-Pilot (cruise control), PLUS a speed minder, the small knob with numbers to the right of the speedometer. Like the better know Buick Mother-In-Law speed reminder that buzzed when a speed was reached, the Dodge instead flashed the parking brake warning light when the reminder speed was reached. Also that light (lower left of dash you asked about) has nothing to do with being in neutral other than there's no Park in the trans and you usually have the parking brake on and the light is lit. The dash is gorgeous at night with soft green lighting, also the speedo shows green to around 35, is orange up to 60-65, then turns red the rest of the way to the end. She had a tachometer exactly the size of the clock in the instrument cluster. I was into the local drag racing scene at the time. 0-60 was 7.5 sec or less, and the 1/4 was 11-12 seconds at 112+ mph, top speed was a nudge over 140. That to me was phenomenal for such a loaded car. That enormous trunk could hold two 250 Yamaha flat track motorcycles (my friend Norm and I raced flat track) our leathers, a gas can, and spare parts AND we could close the trunk lid. The car had a set of Chrysler chrome wire wheels (with Goodyear Blue Streak wide whitewall tires)on it when I got it, but I drove aggressively enough they would vibrate. I replaced them with chrome rims with a section painted black and wire baskets with knock offs over them. They looked exactly like wires and no more problems. I might also mention to Mr McCandless, please, for your own driving pleasure raise the front suspension to stock specs. The same goes for all torsion bar Mopars (like his Imperial). The cornering ability and stability is increased tremendously. A lot of people like the ability to crank them lower in the front, but they even look better, if slightly arrogant with the front up. One of my 1957 Plymouth Belvederes was cranked all the way down. The people who had the car basically gave it to me, they said it was dangerous and hard to control. I jacked it up and cranked up the torsion bars to stock height and it handles like a good sports car. My '59 Dodge, alas, started adopting an attitude like Christine. I kept it near perfect condition, I just got the feeling it didn't like me anymore. I loved that car and learned high speed driving more than ever, but in the end, I traded with my girlfriend of the time for a black, fully loaded 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country wagon. One day I'd like to find another '59 Dodge and recreate the look of my old one, but then my two 1957 Belvederes (Sportscoupe and convertible) might get jealous
    Lawrence

Theirs was 2-tone in a cream/white and light brown color. My Auntie drove it until she passed in 1981. It was always kept in a closed garage, so it still looked show room new for all of those years. that rear view mirror mounted on the dash was a very bad design. it was hard to see what was behind you, and if people were in the back seat, it was impossible to see behind you. the 1st thing i did when i bought my 59 dodge was made a bracket and hung the mirror from the top of the windshield so i could see. the 2nd thing i did was move the exterior rear view mirrors from the fenders to the doors. another bad design from the factory. with the mirrors so far from the driver, you didn't have much of a field of view behind you and you could not adjust the mirror from inside the car. you can try it. hold a mirror to your left side and see how much you can see. now put the mirror 4 feet in front of you and see how much less you can see behind you. i bought mine in 1968. to this day i still think it is the most beautiful car ever made

Nice car! The summer after I took my driverlicense mom and dad putted me behind the steeringwheel of a foor door Dodge Royal 59! I loved that car, I drove it for about 10 years, then they sold it! It had the same colourschematic on it and it was the first very double green combination in Sweden. The summer dad did it we went to Wings and Wheels and they told in the speakersystem that they wanted that Dodge on stage. Well, cannot be mad at them, because it was the only green green car on the entire field. But after that show...green green was spitted out like, I do not know...like it was from a factory or something. The fourth door was not a HT though. But man! I loved that car, no powersteering, nor powerbrakes...it was genuine...but I was chocked how easy it was to turn even if there was no powersteering. I could handle it onehanded. Nice car, if I got the cash I will for sure bring back that car where it belongs. :D Cheers from Sweden! Btw, it even sounds like mom and dads Dodge! Omg omg omg! A tear dripping down my eye now!

Thanks for the response. I hope you will get some good memories in that Dodge 59. I got tons of them from my mom and dads Dodge. Yeah, I was my mom and dads private driver on every swapmeet, classicmeets and so on around Sweden in these days. They even got an old time Opio caravan in the same colour as the car. The caravans that was nicknamed "egg" here in Sweden. So in that one we slept in if the swapmeet or classicmeet was longer then a day and ofcourse many people looked at our Dodge with the caravan and their eyebrows was raised quite a bit. :)

Awe. That's the emotion I feel. That bench seat with the swivel driver seat! Amazing engineering that's not seen today. These cars could look good because safety wasn't as important, I mean these cars were (hand)built for cruising so crashes were less fatal as no one was going too fast, except those greasers. Today's cars have to look ugly to allow people to go fast. A compromise that should never be made. You should come over to England, there's many car shows here. There's a annually one not far from my home town which is free. There are both British and American classics. Last year there was even HUGE (bigger than american classic HUGE) WW2 trucks and even some steam engines from the Victorian era.

Standard motor in the Custom Royal was the 361 4-barrel. D500 had a 383 4-barrel which was pretty much identical in appearance, just had a bigger bore. Top option was the D500-1, which had a 383 with two four barrels. There was also a 326 poly 2-barrel which was the base V8 in the Coronet, and a 361 2-barrel, which was the base V8 in the Royal. These two models optionally offered the 4-barrel 361 and the two 383 motors listed above. You could also get a flathead six in the Coronet - last year for it in US passenger cars; next year was the first slant six. Just FYI

That is a Custom Royal Lancer hardtop (that's why it has the knight/spear on the front fenders). This was the last year Dodge offered it. These cars didn't have a parking mechanism in the transmission and the parking brake was actually on the back of the transmission and kept the drive shaft from turning. Dodge went to a more conventional setup in 1962 with a park lever under the push buttons and parking brakes on the rear wheels. The engine is probably a B 361 as the Hemi engines were discontinued after 1957.

My Dad bought a 59 Coronet new and to his dying day in 09 always said it was the worst car he ever owned. He constantly poured oil in it, bits and pieces loosened or fell off, radio died, etc. I was 8 when he bought it and I remember having to remove the plate sperating the tranny push buttons in order to put the second gear button back in place several times a week as the car aged 3 or 4 years. We lived up a pretty steep hill so Mom would punch that 2 button and more often than not it would fall in behind that plate and you couldn't choose another gear unless I rehung it and fed it through the plate hole again. At 10 years old or so me and my trusty phillips head got real familiar with the issue, lol. Dad kept it till 65 and traded it for a new Mustang which proved to be a much better car...not quite as stylish perhaps but far more reliable. Memories seeing this car.
