Just imagine popping in the Aja CD, especially in light of your reactions so far - and you're NOT EVEN DONE YET:
Side One (on the original vinyl)
    1. Black Cow
    2. Aja
    3. Deacon Blues
Side Two (on the original vinyl)
    4. Peg
    5. Home At Last (the only Steely Dan song my band in college played)
    6. I Got The News
    7. Josie
The album produced 4 singles (Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Peg, Josie) and the title track got airplay too. At least 4 songs feature background vocals by Michael McDonald who you've reacted to as a solo artist and in the Doobie Brothers. Yes, this album is an absolute masterpiece, their magnum opus.

      Sorry, but incorrect .....
"Black Cow" was not a single,
      except for being a B-side.
      There was THREE singles
      from the album, not four.
"Peg" was the first single and it
      charted at #11.
      It's B-side was "I Got the News".
      "Deacon Blues" was the second
single and it charted at #19.
It's B-side was "Home At Last".
"Josie" was the third single and
      it charted at #26.
      It's B-side was "Black Cow".
The song "AJA" is the only song
on AJA that wasn't released as
either the A-side or the B-side
      of a vinyl single.
I should mention that their #22 hit
      "FM (No Static At All)",
from the movie FM, was released
in between "Deacon Blues" and "Josie".
And a bit of trivia, AJA is the only
      Steely Dan album that released
      three singles from the album.
      All of their other albums,
from CAN'T BUY A THRILL to
GAUCHO all had two singles each.
Here's the singles from each album
and their peak chart positions .....
      From CAN'T BUY A THRILL,
      "Do It Again" (#6)
      "Reeling In the Years" (#11)
      From COUNTDOWN TO ECSTASY,
      "Show Biz Kids" (#61)
      "My Old School" (#63)
      From PRETZEL LOGIC,
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number" (#4)
      "Pretzel Logic" (#57)
      From KATY LIED,
      "Black Friday" (#37)
      "Bad Sneakers" (#103)
      From THE ROYAL SCAM,
      "Kid Charlemagne" (#82)
      "The Fez" (#59)
      From AJA,
      "Peg" (#11)
      "Deacon Blues" (#19)
      "Josie" (#26)
(( Again, and even though it got
some FM airplay, "Black Cow" was
      only the B-side of "Josie".
It was NOT a 4th released single )).
      From GAUCHO,
      "Hey Nineteen" (#10)
      "Time Out of Mind" (#22)
(( The popular song, "Babylon Sisters",
was never released as a single )).
There were two other Steely Dan
singles released during the 70s .....
      "Dallas" b/w "Sail the Waterway"
      was actually Steely Dan's debut
      single, released in 1972.
      Both songs were non-LP, 45-only
tracks ..... "Dallas" failed to chart.
Poco later included their cover of
"Dallas" as an album track on their
      1975 album, HEAD OVER HEELS.
      "FM (No Static At All)",
      from the FM soundtrack album,
      was a 1978 single that reached #22.

By the release of Aja, Steely Dan was just two guys with musical ideas, and the best session musicians that money could buy. Be sure to listen to the Royal Scam, their demented masterpiece. My pick - 'Don't Take Me Alive'. Or the title Track - The Royal Scam.
btw, Aja won a Grammy for engineering. There's a documentary on how Peg was engineered. One thing about Walter and Donald - what you heard was exactly what they wanted you to hear in the recording.
Their lyrics dealt with the seedy side of nightlife in the city - the pimps, dealers, hustlers, musicians, etc. Kid Charlemagne is written about an LSD cook, I think......

No, a Black Cow is just a sticky sweet fountain drink with milk plus either cola or root beer. "On the counter by your keys was a book of numbers and your remedies. One of these surely will screen out the sorrow but where are you tomorrow?" You know how people who are addicts are also often sugar fiends? I think that is what they are talking about here. The "book of numbers" could be either a betting book or a list of people to call for a fast hook up. Compulsive addictive behaviors are a theme in Steely Dan songs. See "Do It Again".

Lmao, you a fool. Great reaction. Steely Dan is incredible. Paraphrasing Garland Nixon, Steely Dan is like listening to the universe. BTW, a "Black Cow" is indeed a cocktail.

    Hey Jamel:
Your expressiveness puts a perfect, filled-with-awe 'visual face' onto all of these great songs. A very appropriate reaction to this music that so many of us folks -- who are maybe 20-25 years older -- are so passionate about. I was fortunate enough to have actually 'been there' when all of this amazing music was originally released. We are all the better for it.
One suggestion: That great Producer for Atlantic Records, Thom Bell, wrote a one-off for a group named New York City, titled 'I'm Doin' Fine Now.' This song, with its' galloping drum and bass lines, really synthesizes and captures that certain feeling and soul, of the soul sound of the 1970's.

I remember listening to this in junior high. I was so sophisticated back then.

“Humble Thyself “. Your shirt compelled me to subscribe. Oh yeah, I also like these recent choices, intelligent music is a richer experience for your soul to feed on.

I saw Steely Dan in the Hunter Valley NSW Australia around 2003. They played outdoors at a Vineyard. We sat and enjoyed a meal and then watched their performance. Unbelievable. Unbelievable..

Steely Dan is another one of those really rare bands who just SOUNDS LIKE NO ONE ELSE. Or, rather--no one else sounds like they. And, Jamel--I totally love your reaction to them and others! So glad you appreciate them. You really do rock, yourself!

"THIS BAND" might be my favorite EVER. Sophisticated lyrics and musicians and arrangements. Grammy winning recording excellence. Valerie Simpson always one of the backup singers, yo.

Every time I hear this song, I think it’s my favorite. But then I hear another Steely Dan song, and that’s my favorite. How can you pick just one?
This is a good one though!

Check out , "Don't take me alive", Royal Scam Lp. Larry Carlton's opening guitar riff maybe best ever or second only to ,"Kid Charlemagne's", guitar solo.
