    Andre the Giant was a very famous wrestler-back in the day he was thrown from the ring and landed on my grandfather (who was a major wrestling fan). That night my grandfather came home from the match with my brothers and they were so excited that Andre the Giant broke my grandfathers glasses..my grandfather was from Italy and his English was very broken but he was beyond excited and couldn’t stop telling people his experience. He basically spoke about it until the day he died. I can’t see Andre the Giant without thinking of this!

    Billy Crystal as Miracle Max is pure gold. Billy tended to adlib his lines causing everyone to crack up. Even the director had to step out of the room during filming because Billy was making him fall apart laughing. I bet it was pure torture for Cary Elwes to keep perfectly still as this comic genius just slayed. André René Roussimoff (Andre the Giant) was 7' 4" and weighed 520 pounds. He was French and undefeated as a professional wrestler until he let Hulk Hogan beat him (Hogan's words) when he had major health problems just before he died. Andre was very proud of his role in "Princess Bride" and profusely expressed his gratitude for those those responsible for his inclusion in the movie.
    Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya, watched the premier with his wife. It was the first time he saw the film in it's entirety. At the end of the film Mandy's wife noticed that he was crying. She asked him why and he said "Every actor dreams of playing a role that is timeless and is loved by all generations. back during his era of wrestling, and prior to that when andre was just a spectacle to oogle, he was treated horrible. as were the other wrestlers. many of them were down to buying bags of potatoes to eat RAW between matches because vince mcmahon wouldn't pay them worth crap. he had them all as 1099's, meaning "private contractors" so he treated them like some guy you hire to mow the lawn, or something like that. vince is utter scum for how he treated them. so when andre got into this program, everyone adored him. he was very fun, had a great sense of humor, liked to screw around. but he was also very frail at this point. they had to rig him carefully during a couple of the scenes where he had to show himself being strong, because his back was basically destroyed, and his heart was weak. he met a very sad ending, but the world has so many happy memories of our loveable giant.

      @billsoo306 Před rokem +4

      I don't think it was a spoof... the original book was written by William Goldman and was basically inspired by his 2 daughters. He asked them what subject they wanted for a bedtime story and one said "Princesses" and the other said "Brides". So he told an over the top fairy tale about a princess bride. In that sense, it is a parody of fairy tales, but not necessarily love stories. The best part is that since Goldman was a screen writer (he wrote "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), it was natural for him to adapt his novel to a screenplay for the movie.

    I was in high school when this came out, and every time I see it I laugh, and the older I get the more I get misty-eyed when the grandfather tells his grandson "As you wish."
    Okay...So, the story was conceived when the writer William Goldman asked his young daughters what kind of story they wanted to hear before bed. One daughter wanted a story about a princess. The other daughter wanted a story about a bride. Since Goldman was a novelist and a screenwriter, with one Oscar for Best Screenplay (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid)...he wrote the story as a novel but also had in mind what he wanted to do with it as a screenplay. He used the 'S. Morgenstern' part as a red herring...he created it. However, when you read the book, it is "The Good Parts Version" that Goldman adapted from a book that actually never existed before he wrote it.
    Cary Elwes, who plays Westley, wrote a book about the filming with lots of behind-the-scenes stories called 'As You Wish' that is almost as good as the film is, and is a must-read for fans of the film. He has done tons of movies as a character actor since this came out...he was the mom's boyfriend in 'Liar, Liar', and Jonas is 'Twister'.
    Robin Wright, who plays Buttercup, made her big-screen debut in this. She's been in tons of stuff...most famously as Jenny in 'Forrest Gump'.
    Mandy Patinkin, who plays Inigo, was a stage actor in musicals on Broadway. With the final duel with Count Rugen, Patinkin imagined that Rugen was cancer...which claimed Patinkin's father before making the movie. So when he says to Rugen, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch!"...that wasn't acting. That was him, angry and trying to kill the cancer that claimed his dad. Patinkin has an amazing singing voice, he tours constantly, and he is also well known for his series 'Homeland'.
    Andre the Giant became the most beloved member of the cast among the cast and crew. There are many warm, endearing, and hysterical stories about him during the filming. When he died, it was devastating for everyone in the cast. He really only made this film...but as a legacy, it is an amazing one. The filming did inspire another film called 'My Giant' written by Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) which he also starred in. It was a cute film, but it's forgotten today.

    The interesting thing about Mandy Patinkin's performance is that he had recently lost his father to cancer at the time of filming, so he used the pain he felt regarding his father's loss and basically projected it onto the character of the six fingered man. That the character was the cancer that took his father's life, and he was going to get him for it. So when he says "I want my father back you son of a bitch," he's speaking with real emotion there.

    This NEVER gets old!!! If you ever watch this with me, I WILL recite the entire movie...just saying. So many great actors! This is a REAL book. The "Cliffs of Insanity" are based on the real Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland. Andre actually did several movie parts and tv show appearances. Because of his back though he didn't actually "catch" Robin Wright. They set her up on like a pulley system that "dropped" her in his arms and took most of her weight off of him because he couldn't really hold her either. That's Wallace Shawn with the lisp. In an interview, he's said that he doesn't feel he's a funny person but because of his lisp and his line delivery, everyone thinks he's hilarious which he is.

The casting was perfect, and this movie had it all humor, touching elements, combat. Grandpa was right it had it all. This movie is a classic and I love it. But if you look deeper this is about how sometimes we as children forget or don't understand the value of a good grandparent. At first, he thought it would be boring, but as grandpa read, he became more and more engrossed and at the end when he asked grandpa to come back and read it again. He said, "As you wish." Tears.

    Absolutely one of the greatest movies ever, and believe it or not, one of the pillars of my marriage. I met my wife on OkCupid, and there were two things in her profile that drew me to her right away: Led Zeppelin, and The Princess Bride. She told me later that she was interested in me right away because of the very first sentence of the very first message I ever sent to her: "I'll bet we could have fun storming the castle together." We celebrate the 10th anniversary of our first date next month, and in December of 2021, we finally moved into the house we bought together. The first morning we woke up in our new home, she got a look of realization on her face, and excitedly said, "You know what moving into this house means? It means that we have finally successfully stormed the castle together!" She is one of the few things in my life that I love more than this movie.

Asia, you had some of the best jump scares in this one, starting with the lion right at the beginning! 🤣🤣 BJ, you are so right about how good it is to have a giant around. If you don't know about him, that's professional wrestling legend Andre the Giant, who at his biggest was over seven feet tall and over 500 pounds. He had gigantism, and that caused him a lot of pain later in life, including when this movie was made. He died about 6-7 years after this, at only 46 years old. From everything I've heard, he was one of the nicest and most generous people ever. I'm so glad he was able to do this movie - it would not have been the same without him. You two are awesome!! 😊

    I remember my cousin was really into this movie and quoting it all the time. I was only interested because Andre thr Giant was in it and I was a huge wrestling fan. It definitely feels good to laugh and have some good memories. Good to see you 2 cause I have been so busy lately. Asia looks beautiful and BJ is OK for a dude😂. Love these reaction and I love you guys ❤️.

    When I saw this come up in my YT feed I made a bet with myself that when Asia went for the blanket the grandfather would stop the story to comfort the kid. Called it!

    Peter Falk's "as you wish" at the end of this is a perfect closing to a film. In case nobody's mentioned it yet, the priest at the wedding was played by Peter Cook, absolute LEGEND of British comedy.

    I don’t usually post comments on CZcams but just feel like I wanted to tell you that I found your channel and it has been bringing me joy the last couple of weeks. A lot of these movies are ones I grew up watching and loving. It’s been really fun to watch the two of you watching them. I love how you completely engage in the story and the characters and show up to be there to root for them! Plus you seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company and hanging out watching movies together. I just wanted you to know that you have made me feel happy, entertained, and nostalgic all at the same time❤
