My theory are that there is in fact two timelines. The original timeline consisting of the first first books, the original all the way to Hard Luck, but after that book you'd imagine Greg would start high school.
This is where the second timeline comes in. The long haul picks up not after Hard Luck, but after the original. It is the summer that we never saw in-between book one and rodrick rules. This continues on all the way until the most recent book, Big Shot. This explains why Greg can be in Middle School for so long. He's not. We have simply gone to a different timeline.
The first eight books leave details at the end that are connected to each other, or events are references from past books. This gives them all a sense of cohesion. But Long Haul doesn't reference Hard Luck, and in fact actually clashes with the continuities of books 1-8.
For a quick example, in long haul he doesn't know what I.O.U. means but he does in Cabin Fever. The other books do this too. Wrecking Ball clashes with Rodrick Rules and and Deep End clashes with Cabin Fever. It's clear these books are divided into two different sections. Those pre long haul, the of timeline, and those with Long Haul and forwards, the new timeline. Currently, Greg is in 8th grade in both timelines.

“In Old School, Greg actually starts a new year of middle school, just like he did in the first book”
This is Jeff Kinney confirming that Greg isn’t dead or held back a grade, he just started started middle school all over again

I didn't know that Jeff Kinney had directly said that Greg is in middle school in Old School, but I think it can be inferred that it's not supposed to be Greg entering high school. I honestly believe that the series has just become a ritual for Jeff Kinney, and that's why I categorize theories about Greg being dead or held back a grade as more "conspiracy"-esque since they aren't inferred in any real way in the novels

IDK, but my theory is that Greg already finished middle school by the time Hard Luck rolls around, sent those diaries, err... journals to his mum to maybe have a try to get it published.
It got published and was successful, so Greg decided to continue the series while still in high school, writing crazy stories that he probably heard from other middle schoolers in his neighbourhood.
So that's why there were so many incontinuities and retired characters - his memory fades a little and he never bothered to review the previous books.

My theory is that when Greg started writing in his diary, everyone else stopped aging and here’s why.
In the first book Greg says that middle school is based on age and he complained that it should be based on height which means greg should be in high school when he’s 14. Jeff Kinney confirmed that Greg is 12. In the Ugly truth, Greg is in 8th grade but he mentions about the older kids. Greg and every other character never changed appearance even in the Ugly Truth when he’s going through puberty. the common theory is that greg keeps on failing school. But there’s one big problem with this. Rowely does well in school but he’s still in middle school and is in the same grade as Greg. Plus math is the hardest subject for Greg also in Doaak, Rowely mentions Greg has a 74 in math. The only problem with this theory is in Hard Luck, Greg confirms that you can get held back.

You have some interesting points about the timeline. Which part of Hard Luck are you referencing? That’s EXACTLY my theory. Books 1-9 are in “universe a” and books 10-16 are in “universe b”
      This makes sense because:
      1) In the deep end manny is still three
      2) In wrecking ball greg says he didn’t know you can take the hinges off a door. In rodrick rules, he and rodrick took the hinges off a door.
      3) Also in wrecking ball, greg mentions this monster he was scared of when younger. In the first 9 books, he never even mentioned it.
      4) In Big Shot, greg says the only sport he played was soccer. In an earlier book (I think the last straw) greg says he played baseball when he was younger.
      5) People complain that there are too many vacation books. This theory could provide an explanation for why there are so many. The universe b equivalent of the long haul is the deep end.

If your theory stating that Greg's first day of middle school was on Tuesday, September 4th, 2007 is true, then that would mean that Greg Heffley was born exactly on Friday, February 23rd, 1996.

@@TheMineFish Alright, if you ever consider doing it, here’s what I found:
The first movie doesn’t have any specific dates. 2009 and 2011 appear on newspapers, but those are obviously just issue numbers and not indicative of a time frame. It’s worth noting that the film starts in September of an unspecified year and sends in May or June of the next.
The closest we have for one in Rodrick Rules, where we see the date 3/10 on the phone. Given that this took place on a weekend, the closest calendar year to the film’s release that I could find is 2012. Crazily enough, this aligns with the third film’s release year and is set in the same school year as it. While the only exact year we’re given, it pops up again in the DVD short for Dog Days, revealing that Greg left 7th grade in that year. This would logically place the beginning of 1 in 2010 and its ending in 2011, the start of Rodrick Rules in that same year and its conclusion in 2012, and all of Dog Days there as well.
The only thing I feel that could be thrown out is the party date though. While I firmly believe in the other timeframes provided above, for this to be possible, Greg’s encounter with his new teacher and Rodrick finding out about the talent contest, given the flow of events, would have to take place months apart.

Due to what happened when I was in 5th grade I actually find it believable that a school would be in session December 26th. Maybe the teachers went on strike and that school calander was the result. But if this happened we would've seen how it effected Greg through either a long break or flashbacks with school starting in October. But hey, a Wimpy Kid style story about that could be quite interesting, with parents going too far in drilling the books into the kid's head. Or worse yet in Greg's case, forcing him to do civil war re-enactment. Yea it's similar to Dog Days for how the parents handle it (it's also autobiographical, except change out Civil War re-enactments to emphacising a school focus on everything that's supposed to be fun as you see your piers posting about them doing your bucket list trips to Florida and Europe on social media, as you're stuck playing "mom's monopoly" making it so everything must go through the bank with $500 bills or making kids keep score for bowling with a paper and pencil, the parents asking to have the score tv turned off. And of course, after the "fun" activity you need to crack open the actual school books, as examples. As a young adult that's an aspiring pro-bowler the latter actually sounds pretty fun but as a 10 year old kid it was just forcing unnecessary math on me) and combine that with 0 days off. There's a lot that could be done with that.
