    Artwork tip: I wanted an extremely large canvas on a two story wall but, those are SUPER expensive! So I bought a shower curtain that I loved. I built a frame with leftover wood from another project. I used a staple gun and stretched the shower curtain over it. Mounted it on the wall! $30!

    My aunt married into a polish family and they introduced her to polish pottery. Polish pottery is basically just nice dishes but instead of all being a set they pick coordinating colors. She has the most beautiful coffee mugs and she has maybe two of each thing tops. They're all blue and patterned but they coordinate instead of being identical. It's just gorgeous and that's how I approach my design style. Its a very second hand furniture friendly approach and you get to layer up and choose designs that resonate with you. All her mugs sit in her hutch on display and you feel so nice having coffee at her house drinking from her beautiful pottery.

    My apartment is pre-boob light. lol. Those matching furniture sets seem to be the goal in my neighborhood...same as the 'artwork'...screams Rent A Center! Agree with all but twinkle lights. It's a long dark winter here, and having white Xmas lights in the windows gives me just a little life. Lamps never seem to do that for me. Their light always seems so 'task oriented'. Light coming from the windows is a big 'yes'.

    • @me9981

      I know, right? Better suggestion would be to buy art from local artists. And if it's still expensive there are always prints. A lot of those artists sell their prints too and that's always a cheaper version. And if that's still expensive....if you want something for 1$...well...thrift it. Fuck Ikea.

    I didn't put much stock into rugs till I moved into a place that is partially furnished. There was a rug in the livingroom and I'd never had a rug before. The first time my foster cat spilled coffee on it I threw it out on the back deck with the intention of washing it. It wasn't till it had been out there for two weeks that I realized why my space felt off. I was used to not having rugs before, but now that I'd experienced a good rug in the right place I couldn't feel right about the bare floor. I washed it and brought it back in and yes, they do tie a space together.

    FURNITURE AWAY from the WALLS is the best tip you gave. Very few decorators do this. Thank you. I've even seen a queen bed planted in the centre of a bedroom. The head board served as a backside aginst the dresser, which in turn created a dressing area. It was closest to the window so it got good light. And the bed area remained a bit darker. VERY Cool! Personally ALL of my one-room home is decorated / divided up by having all the furnishings are away from the walls and centered down the room's length. You can see lots of wall-to-floor, making the place feel larger and airier. It has flow.

    When we moved to our 3rd house, we only brought our daughter's bedroom set. I bought the entire set from a good friend; it was her childhood bedroom set. We don't have as much since we went minimal so were able to separate the pieces & re-vamp them into separate rooms for all the kids. Our daughter has the bed & headboard & 1 night stand painted white. Our middle son has the 5-drawer armoire in the closet & the youngest has the dresser & the other nightstand painted a blue gray. They do not look like the same set since the paint makes them look totally different. They got to pick the color & they are happy.

    • @robinmp8300
      @robinmp8300 Před 3 lety +14

      keep your color tones together. For example, the color gray, there are many tones of gray, grayish green, grayish tan, grayish blue, so stay with blue or cooler tones if your floor is cool or has blue tones, wooden floors if light will also go cool or warm, warm having a reddish or warm pinkish tone in it. look at a color wheel, all colors can lean warm or to the cool side. light colors open a space, dark closes in, some pinks are on the orange side, some on the purple side. Try doing a color quiz on colors you like, Keep contrast in mind.

      Use basic color theory concepts to decorate your home and choose colors you love. Also be sure to choose something that makes it easy to tie main areas together and make them have a sense of flow. We just moved into an old farmhouse we bought a few weeks ago. My entry way is red, which opens into the living room, which is an orange colorwash that resembles the morning sunrise, which opens to a hallway and the dining room. The hallway is golden castle by valspar, while I'm planning to do a 2 tone paint in a light yellow with a dark gold using a double paint roller. All areas have a creamy yellow ceiling which compliments the walls and the open door frames between them are the same color. All warm colors but really help make it cheerful and warm. If you haven't guessed, fall is my favorite season and I chose my colors based on that. I have no idea how we'll be doing the kitchen just yet. For spaces like your bedroom, you want cool and relaxing colors that encourage you to relax and sleep. We went with turquoise and dark purple for this. Take your time looking at colors and think about what will make you love the space you have. Also, lighter or brighter colors work best in smaller spaces to make them feel more open. Hope this helps.

      The only problem is if you place all your furnature on the rug, when you view it from walking in the room, it looks like your area rug is a boat and everything lives on your floating boat in the room, by pulling some pieces slightly off onto the wood floor, you are now activating the space on the floor around the rug to include it in the look not isolate it as a blank sea around the boat. Match if you go for symetry which is a very formal balanced look, then its ok. Do your taste. Mixing found objects makes for great conversation about the space. :)
