  • Early in September 2020 I got permission to get up on the bandstand in Halifax's public gardens and shoot some videos. In lieu of a release show for my September 26th full-length release, Spring Garden Bandstand, I'm sharing the videos we shot that day with you now!
This is a piece composed by my grandfather, Dan Leeman, that I've arranged for solo guitar. It's a march written in the tradition of John Philip Sousa, and I tried to follow in the footsteps of the great Guy Van Duser and his Sousa arrangements.
My grandfather Dan was a member of the Black Watch band in Halifax for many years, and always wanted to get up on this very bandstand with his horn. Dan told me the Black Watch was supposed to play a concert on the bandstand once, but they quickly found out they weren't all going to fit up there- and then the timpanist showed up. They played from the grass down in front of the bandstand. He finished that retelling with 'I like old bandstands in parks.'
