    This instructional video will show you step by step on how to safely perform the scalene neck stretch. To see all our comprehensive videos on trigger points, go to • Trigger points
    Neck pain is quite common. Scalene muscle tightness can occur from things such as whiplash injuries, bad posture and from keeping the head in a forward head posture. If you have trigger points or muscle knots in the scalene musculature, pain can refer down the arm and to the shoulder. That's why its important to self treat the scalene muscles with trigger point therapy, using your hands or the Muscle Wizard.
    Since the scalenes, particularly the anterior scalene muscle, produce a wide variety of strange pain, its important to start with your stretches slowly. If neck stretching increases pain or discomfort, stop and go back to self trigger point treatments. You may have to do this several times before you find the scalene stretch useful and provides neck pain relief for longer periods of time.

    Wow! I've had pain all day and thought I would look for a helpful video. After a Trigger point session and a few scalene stretches, I felt a release and my pain dropped dramatically! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'll be able to sleep tonight.

    I thought I had a cervical pinched nerve and all points for it were leading that way but nothing was ever being solved. And then I decided to look into the muscles in my neck and realized my problem could be elsewhere. Stumbled upon the scalene muscles and researched how those can be the culprit in which I was led to believe it was cervical radiculopathy. It now appears that the scalenes were causing symptoms. Thanks so much for your videos!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU EXPLAIN EVERYTHING SO WELL. I BEEN SUFFERING FOR 20 YEARS WITH MUSCLE KNOTS/TRIGGER POINTS/ FASCIA RESTRICTION, AND RANGE OF MOTION. I have all the tools, read books but can't seem to release them. You are helping more than any book by slowly showing me what to do, and how to use the tools correctly. I might be able to get a little relief now. I would love to know how to work on all my muscles under my arm pits. and all through pecs. These get way under my arm pits and i have to squeeze deeply through. I will look for more on your site. ty

    I tried the massage with the thumb a few of weeks ago when I got severely dizzy; it worked. I then told my physiotherapists that I finally knew what was giving me dizziness (they claimed to have no idea), but after weeks of acupuncture specifically in that area I felt no improvement, and they just said it was a result of the loss of curvature in my neck (too straight).
    The continuous pain gave me the courage to try and follow your whole set of recommendations, so for the past two days I’ve been doing the massage, stretches and a bit of isometric exercises.
    Well, guess what? I feel like I have a new neck! I’m still dizzy, my shoulders hurt a lot, but I feel lighter and can raise my arms! Even the pins-needles sensation that I had been experiencing in my legs for seven years decreased! In just two days! Sorry for using so many exclamation marks, I’m just sooOOO happy, amazed, and full of hope now.
    Thanks for making sharing what you know through these videos.

      how are you now? the dizziness may be from SCM !!

    • @lw7654
      @lw7654 Před 3 lety

      It’s probably your scm causing the dizziness. Also could be your traps. There’s one trigger point of the traps that is indistinguishable from the scm that causes dizziness. Also, massage sub occipitals. I also have/had dizziness on and off through the years. Nothing helped and no one had a clue. After basically researching trigger points and massage, I fixed myself and when it happens again, I get out my massage books and do it again. I always do my neck, chest and shoulder muscles. Good luck to you!

    Great video at 3:00ish. As a personal trainer, Corrective exercise specialist and massage therapist it would be helpful to break it down in steps: 1) laterally flex 2) rotate contra-laterally, etc...

    DNS - Dorsal Scapular Nerve Entrapment Syndrome - an inflamed scalene from bad posture can entrap this nerve and refer pain to shoulder blade, arm etc. Thinking that's what i've got. Could be a cervical issue too...C3-6

      Your Vegas nerve runs through your neck and heads straight to your stomach. Focus some research on that and see what you can find.

    Can this effect your shoulder?

    • @WizardofhealthNetResource
      @WizardofhealthNetResource  Před 7 lety +3

      good question Travis. The referral patterns for scalenes is very similar to a nerve root irritation. Want to see the referral pattern that you can get from a scalene trigger point? Check out the following link:
      www.triggerpoints.net/muscle/scalene
      One thing to note though. Pressing around the trigger points should recreate the pain, and it should gradually reduce after pressing on the trigger point. If pain gets worse and doesn't improve, then it may be something else. Hope that helps!

    can scalene pain have any connection to a weak rotator cuff?

    • @javih9907
      @javih9907 Před 3 lety

      Fairly unlikely. The rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis) all originate at the scapula (the shoulder blade) and generally attach to your humerus. Their main function is stabilization and rotation of the arm. The scalene muscles originate at cervical vertebrae and attach to rib 1. The posterior scalenus attaches to rib 2. The main function of the scalenes is neck flexion
