10 Ton Theropod! New Study Breaks Dinosaur Size Limits

  • Giant theropod dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Spinosaurus have always captivated the imagination of paleontologists and the public. A new study on dinosaur size, Larramendi et al (2020), indicates that previous size estimates of extinct animals, including theropod dinosaurs, may have been too low due to errors in the measurement of specific gravity. This video explains the meaning of specific gravity, how it affects dinosaur size, and if a 10 ton theropod is physically possible. Spinosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, and other megatheropods like Carcharodontosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Tyrannotitan, Deinocheirus, and Mapusaurus are all bigger than previously thought!

      @user-gb7ho6pb4p Před 3 lety +13

@@Nature_is_metal Explain how Spinosaurus has a higher chance to win on land than T. rex in water. Literally T. rex and Spinosaurus both exploit each other via out-flanking in a similar ratio in speed in land/water. If Spinosaurus starts tearing at a T. rex, it first needs to avoid its jaws. A T. rex would be restricted to a doggy paddle, but a strong thrash could possibly muscle that grip from Spinosaurus off or thrash in a position to swim and crunch a vital area of Spinosaurus in an in-line angle.
As for the Spinosaurus withstanding the bite of the Carcharodontosaurus, there are some things to mention...
      1. The spine was broken. This would have done some lethal damage to Spinosaurus’ spine. Being a predator, Spinosaurus likely retreated after withstanding such an injury to heal the wound off. See, the application of a fight like that would result in the predator instinctively retreating to heal the wound so it wouldn’t die. Combine that with the fact that Carcharodontosaurus had serrated teeth made for bleeding + slashing and tearing off flesh, and that just rather supports why the Spinosaurus likely was the one to retreat in that fight because of blood loss.
      2. Position
Considering the fact that the Carcharodontosaurus was biting the enlarged spine, it clearly represents that Carcharodontosaurus was the one in control in that fight. The Carcharodontosaurus seemed to have out-flanked Spinosaurus’ claws in order to bite the spine. During which, the evidence shows that Carcharodontosaurus was being superior in that fight.
      3. If a T. rex would bite the Spinosaurus’ spine in that position, those bones wouldn’t have merely been broken. No, those bones would have been crushed into a shattered, non-healable, and gory pulp.
On land, T. rex can literally do 3 things to end the battle right then and there...
      1. Rear up and crush Spinosaurus’ skull.
It’s as simple as it sounds. The T. rex just needs to rear up and clamp down on the skull of Spinosaurus. This act would likely be instinctual since T. rexes are known for face biting. If this happens, the Spinosaurus’ skull bones will essentially be crushed as it will die.
      2. Rear up and crush Spinosaurus’ neck
This is almost the same as the previous entry. All the T. rex needs to do it rear up and bite the Spinosaurus’ neck. This position (Assuming a clamp just under the skull or in the middle of the neck) would leave T. rex’s neck out of reach for Spinosaurus’ claws (Claws supported by arms that are limited in articulation, mind you). Even if the T. rex clamps down on the Spinosaurus’ neck where the neck is in clawing range, the T. rex will likely only sustain a claw or two. The claws are strong, but the immense muscles and bulk of T. rex’s neck could withstand at least one claw to the jugular, and probably a good amount of claws to the sides of the neck (Areas away from the jugular). Oh yeah, and this is assuming that the Spinosaurus is alive to achieve such lucky claws when the T. rex bites down. If the T. rex bites down, it will be over quickly. I wouldn’t be too surprised if the bite was too sudden for it to even be alive to claw T. rex quick enough.
      3. Out-flanking Spinosaurus
In this scenario, the T. rex essentially can maneuver around the Spinosaurus to access the side of the neck. Thanks to Snively et al. (2018), Tyrannosaurids, Tyrannosaurus rex included, were concluded to have the agility and maneuverability of a smaller Theropod of half their size. A T. rex of the 8 - 9 metric ton range could maneuver like a smaller Theropod of 4 - 4.5 metric tons. T. rex would be very capable of out-flanking Spinosaurus, especially if the Spinosaurus is in a reared up position which really hinders its already limited mobility to an even worse extent. T. rex can swiftly maneuver around the claws and to the neck where it can clamp down + pulverize bones. T. rex has an overwhelming winning majority of chances on land.

Just when we think we contently know something for sure, a single new discovery can come along and re-write a major portion of the entire subject, if not the whole thing, demonstrating how life from the past is likely well unlike all of our expectations and current beliefs. From what I understand, in a tweet he mentioned a 10-12 ton mass for Spinosaurus and said that methodologies for estimating theropod masses usually result in underestimations. However, the model he used (Ibrahim 2020) has been criticized for being unnaturally bulky, while GDI is widely regarded as a more accurate method of volumetric estimation. The dust is still settling on that particular debate, but for now it's more parsimonious to accept GDI estimates since their model is so controversial.

Next we'll get the Theory of Tyrannosaurian Relativity: Whenever a megatheropod's mass estimate increases, T.rex automatically receives a new study that buffs it proportionally.

Lets see if they find another specimen for my boy Carcha, I always saw Carcha bigger than the rest charcharodontosaurids. Also what about Ibrahim's new weight estimates about Spinosaurus that go up to 12 tons?

There isn't! Ibrahim's a well-renowned Paleontologist but that "12-Ton" specimen isn't even properly researched yet. As far as I know, it's still an unsubstantiated claim to hype up his discovery. Don't forget that when Spinosaurus, Giganotosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus remains are discovered, those who discovered them are quick to claim that said animals are "bigger than T-Rex", "new king of dinosaurs", "largest meat-eater", etc... despite lacking as many fossil samples as Rexes.
I wouldn't blame them though! Fanboys all over the worlds are itching to have the T-Rex dethroned as the largest theropod. If I ever discovered a similar-sized dino as a T-Rex, I'd make the same claims. Easy marketing!
