    Toyota now has a massive seven SUVs in its range we have hopped behind the wheel of the newest - the Toyota Forutner. The Fortuner sits alongside the Kluger and offers buyers a more affordable diesel SUV option that can also go off road.
    With seven seats and a chassis based on the HiLux, we test the Fortuner both on road and off road to see if this latest SUV has been worth the wait.
    Launching with the option of three variants, the Fortuner will take on the recently launched Ford Everest and established players like the Isuzu MU-X, Holden Colorado 7 and the Mitsubishi Challenger.
    The Toyota Fortuner boasts impressive off-road credentials, along with the benefit of thousands of kilometres of local engineering and testing, with Toyota’s local engineering team involved in a great deal of design and testing for the Fortuner.

      The Fortuner is the official practical workhorse, soccer mom, or family car for Filipinos. Believe it or not, this car outsells the Toyota Vios sedan here in the Philippines. The car that defines success here is usually a more expensive one like the Explorer and Land Cruiser. Seriously here in the Philippines, its getting annoying to see a Fortuner on almost every street.

    Just a few facts about this car.
    Ground clearance is 225mm and not 275mm as stated. Toyota Hilux is 275mm.
    The steering padels are useful for a long down hill run with lots of bends. It releives overuse of the brakes.
    When towing you can only use the first 4 gears on a downhill decent according to the instruction manual. Using 5th and 6th is not effective and may cause damage to the vehicle. That's when you engage shift selection in the auto. When in drive all 6 gears are available.
    Car is also manufactured in Thailand. Not many people have mentioned this.
    I have no regrets buying this car as its a great looking and great quality car. It's comfortable and very reliable and it's got a style that seems to be timeless like the old 4Runner or Surf.
    By the way; Fortuner means surf in Greek.

    Hi everyone, from US here, do you think this is going to be or possibly could become the 4Runner brought to America in 2017? I'm beginning to look at versatile SUVs, and Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon are on my list. I don't want a soccer mom SUV. Any thoughts from out there?

    • @zeeb7846
      @zeeb7846 Před 8 lety

      I think the 4Runner is so successful in the US that it will not be touched. So, I don't think the Fortuner will replace the 4Runner. The 4Runner is pretty much a Land Cruiser Prado, a much fancier truck than the Fortuner.

      The top model 4tuner has the lot. Sun roof and leather heated seats. The list is endless. But would you really take such a vehicle off road in thick mud etc ? I would sooner take a Land cruiser off road then the 4tuner.

  • @rporther
    @rporther Před 8 lety

    Are the interior colours the only ones on offer as shown? Seems an odd match of charcoal gray and brown. I like the high clearance of the Fortuner. I have driven Prados on really hilly terrain in heavy clay and besides the odd slipping the downhill assist and diff lock worked quite well. All told, I like this vehicle. It could take the odd flooded-out road and the dink in the door in the mall car park without me fussing over it.

      TakebackTruth the fortuner isn't even the ugliest SUV, the new Montero (Pajero) Sport's rear design is the ugliest part I've ever seen, even the pre-facelift mu-x the front and rear looks very ugly but when it facelifted it become nicer and sharper but not anymore ugly, so I prefer the fortuner not bad as it is.

      I was really surprised to see Australia not getting the Everest 2.2 TDCi with manual and 6 speed AT, to be frank the new Everest felt like way better suv than Fortuner in a lot of regards,
      I test drove the 3.2 and the 2.2 at Thailand and I felt the Everest to be a better one, the only thing that is not as strong as Toyota in Everest is the brand reliability, apart from that the Australian built Everest is still in all ways superior to the Fortuner at least in the trims I tested,
      Hope Ford Australia realizes this and launch the Everest 2.2, affordable and yet efficient and has adequate power,
      The Everest 2.2 Auto I drove gave around 11-12.4 kmpl at 120 kmph and 90 kmph cruise,
      While off roading its best was 9 kmpl worst being around 7.4 kmpl I believe

      Even I have a similar story with Hondas and Toyotas, hydraulic locks for diesel engines,gasket leakages,extremely poor crash ratings, extremely flimsy built quality,no handling,too soft and soggy suspensions,pathetic interiors feels like after market playground,
      See the reliability is sure a better point for Japanese brands but I beg to be different, this is 2015 long gone are the days of rattling and expensive Fords, now its all about ability,power,design,...
      I drove the new Everest and Fortuner and I can vouche that barring reliability the Everesr is a better SUV than Fortuner,

    • @rporther
      @rporther Před 8 lety

      +@Dacheffen Saw both comments and I appreciate them. We here in Trinidad have both Toyota and Ford dealerships but Toyota, for sales and marketing far overshadows the volume of Fords on our roads. I would like some clarity on that term " reliability " from Ponygt 662 not that I am challenging your comment. It's just that it seems Toyota appears to be by just armchair observation heads and shoulders above other SUVs for tough terrain without "undue" maintenance. Because of TT dollars selling rate to the GBP and USD, Toyota's average service cost for 3-5 year after-sales seems to be high. Especially as diesel must be serviced precisely on due date. Our roads are not outback-type but we have a fair share of potholes to navigate on daily commute and we've seen both Fortuner, Hilux and Prado flourish on them.

    I take delivery of my 4tuner in Feb when the vehicle will have the 2016 plate inside the engine4 bay. The dealer is removing the rear two seats and will have them sealed in plastic bags . Those seats will stay in the shed until its time to trade in.

    As much as I enjoy the 4tuner , the down side is having to get the dealer to remove the 3rd row of seats which obstructs rear view visibility, I hate these HID daytime running lights. TOO BRIGHT and unnecessary on the open road. Have removed 60 % of them so they dont blind oncoming drivers.

    Just rock the old school long wheel base or short wheel base two door four door sorts. I want to see a 4x4 that can carry a pallet... That's not a ute.

      +MLP.A-Len Comparing it's rivals in India which are Mitsubishi Pajero and Ford Endeavour, I believe Ford has designed very lean and has the best bumper design among these. There was no need for extra chiseling in the front bumper. Many people might like it and consider it sporty, but in my opinion that's where it lags behind. Otherwise it would have been flawless design.

    • @yeysbaws

      Seems like everybody has their own tastes. I personally don't like the looks of it, Kinda looked a lot like a Rav-4(2015) Big brother. Well Ford Everest(Endeavour) is the best looking SUV so far. Next on my list is the Mitsubishi Montero(Pajero) it's just the back light, kinda' set me off. lol

    No Kluger or Fortuner in Japan. WTF Toyota? I want an ordinary, boring SUV. I`d be fine with Prado, but the rear door opens sideways so I won't be able to open in out on my carpark, or most carparks actually.
    In the meantime, Mazda CX-8 sells relatively well.
