Standish 2022: A Perfect Vintage

  • The 2022 season in Barossa was an impressive follow on from the excellent 2021 vintage, and the wines so far have shown themselves to be balanced, long and harmonious. In the context of the Standish wines, I have never seen them looking better on release. While previous seasons have here and there surpassed my lofty expectations of greatness form this producer (CC: 2021 Schubert's Theorem), the 2022 release seems to me to be everything that I expected of the 2021 collection. See what you think... At the time of publishing mine are still in the post on the way over to me in Perth, I know our friends in the Uk have already received theirs (lucky you). Have you opened any of your 2022's yet? If so, a penny for your thoughts!

    Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin.com.au) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend, and you like them - good! Because so do I.

    Finally you're back again :) One of the highlights of the year is when you try Dan Standish wines, great review as always. Have been drinking Standish 2019 the last week, and the fifth day was the best day. But I must say my favorite wines at the moment are Bekkers, especially their Grenache, 2018 is absolutely amazing right now. I hope to see you soon again, thanks Erin!

    Erin, thanks for sharing the tasting across this vintage. I agree with you on the age-ability , I have been drinking The Standish for a while with > 15 years on them and they are drinking on similar curves to where I would normally put Bordeaux. The whole bunch is also well received in the Lamella, and doesn’t detract from its typicity, in fact I like the profile it adds to the texture, and hopefully as well in driving that alcohol level even further down

    Great video, but I wish you were able to find the time to publish more often! You have however changed my wine life, so much for the better. My Lamella and Schubert’s boxes arrived this week and I look forwards to them. Can I ask why you were comfortable letting the wine oxidise for a few days? I thought that’s the whole point of my gas system? How do I know when to make that decision?

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  Před měsícem +4

      Thanks for watching 🙏 its hard for me with this channel - these videos are easily one of my favourite things to do in wine but they don’t pay the bills: between my full time job with The Advocate and being a mum to two young boys, it can be difficult to find the time to make them. I wish there were more hours in the day.
      I guess you just get used to which wines will go well with oxygen, and which don’t. The Standish wine emphatically do go well with time. Lots of trial and error to work out which wines, and how long!

      The wines interact differently with the vintages, so, as you've found, it's natural to have preferences. 21 was a cooler year, so the bunch component will have looked different than it did in 2020.

      The 2008 Pierre Peters Les Chetillon Champagne. Great vintage, great vineyard, great producer. On this theme, the 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne. I love this wine, but never more so than in 2008 and 2013. The most magnificent wine I've ever had was a bottle of Private Cuvee Krug from the 1960's. As long as I live I'll never forget the way that wine felt and tasted... I was lucky enough to have a second bottle - this time a magnum - the following year, and it was just the same. Magical.

    Like many, I bought these wines within minutes of getting the email from Dan. I have had such a wonderful experience with his wines that I will continue to do so.
    Immediately after ordering I went looking for your review on WA and also checked Halliday. I quite liked the fact that there was nothing there yet, I enjoy the sense of anticipation that creates.
    On a quality to price ratio, I think Standish is comfortably the #1 producer in the country. No one else does what he does at that price. I also think he is up there purely on the merits of what he produces.
    Loved the video, and how it supplements the notes, but next year let the people wait again.

      @@erinlarkin Part of it is selfish. I am going to buy the wines anyway, and I don’t want the competition reviews like this year’s bring.
      I agree with you about how personal wine is. I follow reviewers with a similar taste to me. For example, I prefer your notes on Chardonnay anyone else in Australia, because our preferences for that grape are so similar. For Shiraz you tend a little more towards the ethereal than me, so I take that into account when looking at your scores.

    Many thanks Erin. Great video and really appreciate your insights and skills in describing these wines. You recommend opening a bottle, tasting a small glass then recorking to drink the following day. Is there any chance the wine could oxidise too much in that 24 period? My 3 x lamella and one each of the others arrived today so exciting times.

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  Před měsícem

      I don’t believe they would oxidise too much in that time. You could slow it down by putting the bottle in the fridge I suppose. Tasting the bottle a few times over that period will answer your own questions for you, because by doing that you will work out where you like to drink them… I personally thought two days tasted a lot better than one, but that’s just my opinion. Be interested to hear what you think when you do it.

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  Před měsícem

      I did a video on decanting which goes into the process a little, but in a nutshell - out of the bottle, into the decanter, swirl it around, back into the bottle. If you plan on leaving it a while, the air that got into the wine via that process will slowly do its work, even if you put the cork back in, even if you gas it. You can do it between two decanters if you want, then back into bottle... whatever suits you and the wine.
