  • On this week's show, I demonstrate how to make strong, custom fridge magnets using a combination of my laser engraver and a scroll saw. This project is easily converted to a scroll saw and wood burning project so if you don't have a laser engraver, this project could still be very much, up your alley.

      I'm glad that the jar heads would like it. I do it myself. Thanks for tuning in to the show Bob.

    Kenny, clever little project. I like how the magnet is placed in a pocket instead of being epoxied to the back. Makes for a clean assembly.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před rokem

      Definitely a very clean assembly Paul and no chance of the magnet ever coming off the back of the magnet when the epoxy lets go. I hate it when that happens. Thanks for tuning in sir. Always great to read your comments on the show.

    Great idea, I don't have an engraver, but I have got a burner.

      That would definitely work Mark and they would turn out just as good looking. Good luck on your project and thanks for tuning in.

    Hi Kenny, nice little project here, those laser cutters are very versatile. Thanks for the video.

    They would make great gifts or to sell at craft fairs. Burning, painting, even micro wood carving indeed would work. Great ideas! They turned out nice! Enjoyed, take care!

      Those are all great ideas Michael. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for chiming in with some alternate methods. It's appreciated.

    I've been very busy with all kind of things last few weeks. I hardly had time for woodworking, nor for watching CZcams videos.
    Making (fridge) magnets is high on my wannado-list, so this video might put it even higher. I still don't have a laser cutter/engraver (nor a scroll saw) but for both are
    alternatives. You've already mentioned a few. Hiding the magnet behind a layer of plywood makes the fridge magnet really look slick. I've never seen that before.
    Fridge magnets (many people have metal (in)door frames as well in Slovakia), are very popular here. But they are heavy and flimsy at the same time. The visible from part is massive and then a classic magnet is glued on the back, sticking out of it. Some of them hardly can hold a piece of paper.
    However (I followed the link to the magnets you used, thanks for including), using 32lbs strong rare earth magnets is maybe overkill (and expensive)
    I have to look around here, what kind of rare earth magnets are for sale over here. Thanks for sharing the video. It opens up a wide range of possibilities.
    Our imagination is our limit.
    But I have a request for you: Can you please make a video how to make time?

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před rokem

      I have always found that time is the easiest thing to make. It is always possible to find the time to do what you enjoy (or want) to be doing. I hear a lot of people say that they would love to make a project but they don't have time and yet they are the same people that will sit in front of their television for 3-4 hours a night to watch programs that they aren't really interested in. If someone truly wants to do something, the time will present itself if they only evaluate the time they spend on things that they don't really enjoy. Sometimes, it's all about breaking a habit and starting something new. Thanks for tuning in this week. Good luck with your magnets.

      @@acutabove_woodworkings Woodworking is a hobby for me. It comes only at the third (in the summer half year at the fourth) place, after work, family (and cycling).
      Last month has been very busy with work and things around the family. Projects don't run away. I quit watching TV about 12 years ago. The most important things (no shows (talk shows or reality shows, no films, no serials) I can find on the internet in some kind of archive and I can watch it whenever I wish/have time. I've found an e-shop with all kinds of rare earth magnets. They have so many types, so I'll have to make a choice according some criteria. And I found a company that sells strips of beech wood, 400 by 65 by 4 mm. Very cheap, but I will have to buy them in bulk. Unfortunately it's a 2-hours car drive, one way.

      @@hansdegroot8549 Like you, I don't watch television. I can't remember the last show that I watch as it was that long ago. It sounds like you already have your priorities straight and are spending your time wisely Hans. So on next week's show......we're building a Time Machine. LOL. Thanks again for tuning in.

    You could hang the fridge on the wall with magnets like that 😂 ... yet another brilliant idea for personalised gifts 👍
    If making a lot of these then you could save a lot of time cutting out by not cutting out, i.e. with full sheets only cut the magnet holes then glue the bottom/magnet/magnet/top sheets together at one time (remembering to insert magnets) ... saves having to cut out the blanks, leaving only the engraving and final cutting on the scroll saw to be done!

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před rokem

      Your method would definitely work Barry and would save some time. You would just have to be sure that you knew exactly where the magnets were so that you didn't waste any material by accidentally cutting into a magnet. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your suggestion.

    If you click the "mm" button to the right of "Rotate" you can toggle between imperial & metric units.

    Man you are getting me closer and closer to getting a laser engraver. From my kitchen cabinet project I am ending up with a lot of scrap wood and I would love to do some craft work and start selling stuff. Don’t really know where to begin, I really like this project. BTW I finally dug out my scroll saw, I had to make a custom wall plate. What a joy that tool is, it’s actually relaxing. But you were a big help as far as setting it up and choosing the blade.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před rokem

      The scroll saw is, in my opinion, the most relaxing form of woodworking Randy. I'm glad that you have unearthed it and given it some love. Enjoy. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

    Great ideas! I am going to try these with laser, I have found a 6 inch paper masking on Amazon that I put over the wood that takes care of the burn haze when engraving

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Před rokem +1

      Are you using an air assist Julie? I ask because an air assist can help eliminate the burn "haze" on your engraving projects. Thanks for tuning in and good luck on your magnets.

      The cutting takes a little longer Ken but the engraving is fairly quick. I never timed it but I am going to say about 2-3 minutes per magnet. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
