  • 2023 was quite the year for the family car market! There were so many redesigns, refreshes and releases so the family car market is now more competitive than ever!
    For 2023 we’re doing something new, our first ever Car Mom Award! To be eligible, the car had to undergo a significant redesign or refresh or be a whole new model entirely. Also another caveat is the vehicle had to be available for sale during the 2023 calendar.
    Our categories for judging these cars were:
    🚗 Comfort
    📲 Technology
    🦺Safety
    💰Value
    💺Car Seat Capability
    We did not judge these cars against each other but instead based on that set criteria so today I am excited to announce our four finalists for the Car Mom “Car The Year” Award.
    Finalists:
    2024 Volkswagen Atlas:

    I really think reliability needs to be part of the categories. Because most of these cars won’t have problems for the first 3-5 years; however, there are still several families that buy cars to own for 10 years or more and I believe many out there heavily weigh reliability in their decision process. Cars such as Kia, jeep and dodge have not yet proven long term reliability, while they have done major changes to improve this, it is still not proven yet.

    • @MukisaSS
      @MukisaSS Před 5 měsíci +6

      All the manufacturers are in question now with reliability now that most of them including Honda and Toyota which are using turbo-charged engines which are not as reliable. I would go for a vehicle with a naturally aspirated engine.

    • @greatdane1122
      @greatdane1122 Před 5 měsíci +3

      Yes I agree, however if you get the hybrid 2.5L 4 cylinder (not turbo, meaning not hybrid max version on grand highlander, just regular hybrid) this has gone through the test of time. So depends on which engine you get within Toyota. Not all engines available on the grand are turbocharged.

    • @greatdane1122
      @greatdane1122 Před 5 měsíci +2

      Also, the Honda pilot is using the 3.5L V6 and not turbocharged.

    Love our Grand Highlander! Would love a TX but way too expensive. I guess it all depends on what you are use to- I drove a Sienna for 12 years and loved it. GH feels like an upgrade because i drove an older car. We have 4 very tall teenagers (5’8”-6’1”) and we all fit fine. We have had great luck with toyota so that is why I waited for a GH.

    I am in the market for a large SUV and have recently driven all four. We have had 2 straight Sequoias (Gen 2) and loved them so I was excited about the GH, but then I dtove it and was very disappointed. The ride was rough and not comfortable. I did not love the ride of the Atlas as well. The Pilot surprised me and drove amazing. I also enjoyed the quiet nature of the TX and the new tech in the TX.

      Only the GH Hybrid should win, not the base 2.4t or the expensive hybrid-max. The base 2.4t in the normal highlander, lexus rx, lexus nx, and even the new grand highlander has been having a lot of negative feedback from owners. Just google real consumer reviews of those vehicles with that engine and you’ll see how unhappy people are. Poor reliability apparently… odd for Toyota.

    For brand new models both the TX and Grand Highlander are not performing as well in safety tests compared to almost every other 3 row midsize. For some people that’s not a concern, but for vehicles specifically built to transport families that’s super disappointing and for some a deal breaker. I think safety should be a bigger part of this process going forward. Curious to see what wins your list, keep up the good work!

    • @danaking3568

      I don’t think TX was tested yet…They use GH’s test to evaluate TX. But as a TX owner, it does make me feel very nervous when I saw GH’s test after purchasing the car… I wasn’t even thinking a Lexus would not be top-safety pick before buying the car so I didn’t even look…

    • @anjelicamosher9244
      @anjelicamosher9244 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Part of that is because they have updated the test. If you go back and look at the Highlanders rating, they updated it with the new test. It scored marginal in the updated test, but good in the former test. It had a top safety pick rating. Comparatively, the GH/TX scored acceptable on the updated test. If this car had been released a year earlier, it would have gotten the top safety pick.

    Great video topic and I can't wait to see your winner. I think the VW Atlas is the most improved and most family friendly one in the list. It has bench seats on even the top trims, and also can move the 2nd row without removing the car seats. Most space behind the 3rd row and you can get a good deal. Even in the looks department, honestly it looks better than all the rest. Honestly you are one of the few people to say that the 3-seat 3rd row makes no sense. Unless you have 3 skinny kids with no car seats, you can't seat 3 in the 3rd row properly, so 2 good seats are better.
    I really find the new front grill style of the TX, but honestly that competes with the MDX and QX60 or XC90 for that price.

    @yixuz42 Před 5 měsíci +2

    I’ve been driving our TX for about a month and 2k miles on road trip, and I would like to say a bit about TX vs. Grand Highlander. The main difference is the ride quality: the TX ride is noticeably smoother. The suspension is much more refined, so you don’t feel you are driving a boat. The cabin of the TX is much quieter, similar to Audi Q7, but not as good as Mercedes GLS. Interior wise, I don’t think TX is that luxury, at least I’m not paying the premium for the interior…
    So it really depends on whether the improved ride quality worth the extra money or not. It’s a very personal question. For most people, probably not. For us, it does because our other car is Mercedes C300 and we are used to that level of ride quality, and Grand Highlander will not deliver that (not that it’s not a good car. You just can’t do that without hiking up the cost).

    All 4 have fatal flaws.
    Pilot has poor rear air circulation. You and many other youtubers complained of this when reviewing the Pilot during summer. Cant have baby’s in the back if they’re overheating.
    Toyota/Lexus new 2.4t in the base GH and TX and the hybrid-max/500h is apparently riddled with issues as well check out real consumer reviews from owners online from Edmunds etc. (highlander, grand highlander, lexus Rx, lexus nx), many complaints about poor reliability. Also you cant get a bench in the second row on most trims of the GH or TX.
    Atlas is all brand new and isnt tried and true, questionable reliability. Poor infotainment system that’s difficult to use with haptic touch for everything instead of actual buttons and knobs.
    The only true winner can be the Grand Highlander Hybrid (base hybrid not the hybrid-max). Tried and true powertrain, bench available in upper trim levels, efficient mpg, good air vents for kiddos in the back. Only downside is that it’s pretty slow, but shouldnt be a major deterrent in finding a family hauler.
