    I'm born in Emo, Ontario and some of the best whitetail deer hunting is around the old homesteads of my grandparents as they're gone back to browse. Even Michigan hunters come up the NW Ontario to hunt trophy whitetail. I'm now near Radium Hot Springs, bC and the mule deer here you can pick up by the scruff of their necks, they're so small. No meat on them at all.

    The only animal that I know that receives nutritional density from antlers are the squirrels that savor them after they fall off. That being said, these deer would dress-out at the same weight that deer in my area would weigh in at. It's all about what's in the freezer, the wall decorations are secondary until it's full.

    The obsession with that one tree branch...

    • @JustinHoffman
      @JustinHoffman  Před 3 lety +1

      That is called a 'licking branch.' During the fall rut, a whitetail deer will seek out a low hanging branch to create a scrape underneath. A scrape is digging up the earth with the two front hooves, and then urinating in it to leave his scent. Directly above this scrape he will 'chew' on the licking branch as well as rub his forehead on it - leaving his scent behind. Bucks will visit the same scrape and licking branch regularly to freshen it up, detect if a doe has visited, and leave his scent behind again. There's a method to his madness, lol!

      @@stevedowney4056 I agree, Steve. Being a wildlife photographer, I spend a tonne of time in the woods during the fall photographing bucks. Justin Hoffman I’m 48 years old and hunting my whole life. I had an eight pointer this year while gun hunting 8 feet away. Decent buck for where I hunt pretty heavy mass, was going to let them walk by. Until he stopped turned his head and realized he messed up. All the hair on his body stood straight up he started pawing the ground like a bull. At 8 feet away when he snort wheeze at me I thought he was coming for me and I pulled the trigger. Ended up finding him in the morning because of all the commotion I forgot to aim low ( shotgun sited in at 50 yds )and I hit him high in the lungs. Ended up losing the hunting spot over it because the caretaker at the place said it was the biggest buck he ever saw up there and he was pissed that I got it now I’m not allowed in. I had to sneak in a week ago to go get my trail cameras. If he thinks the one I shot is one of the biggest bucks up there he has no clue what’s running around mid day up there. One camera over a scrape I have 16 different bucks and four really nice ones ( a lot bigger than the one I got )on camera. I don’t know why everything is running so late this year two weeks ago I had pictures of two bucks fighting in front of the camera and most every buck that comes in right now works for scrape still into February

The notch missing from his right ear was an easy giveaway when he would show up each season. Sadly, the footage you watched is the last I have of him. He never returned after that. This is public land but off-limits to hunting. It is bordered by busy roads, so my guess is he was hit or simply died of old age. He was up there in years for sure. I don't think most people realize how hard it is for deer to survive. We live in a village that is off limits to hunting but there are times you will hear gun shots not to far in the distance which is unsettling.
      Believe it or not the deer are smart enough to know this and stay with in the village limits. This past spring we had an old girl I have filmed for yrs. got injured over the winter (leg injury) she left her baby here and I never captured her on my camera again. Her baby is full grown now and still comes here.

    Hey Justin, some great lookin' bucks! I live in Ottawa too, (Barrhaven), I bowhunt up in Franktown. Where/what trails are you on in the greenbelt? East end or west end?

    • @JustinHoffman
      @JustinHoffman  Před 4 lety +1

      Glad you enjoyed the footage, Wayne. I have a variety of different locations where my trail cams are set up, but all are in the west end. (I don't get anymore specific than that, due to not wanting increased pressure and people on these animals, nor the risk or having my cams tampered with.) Saying that, all NCC Trails have a tonne of bucks - you just need to get off trail, bushwhack, and you will find them. I've been hiking, photographing and trail caming NCC land for the last 11 years - the amount of bucks I have found and captured on film is mind boggling (not to mention the 60+ shed antlers I have found over the last 6 or so years.)
      Happy Hiking!

Sadly, the 14 point brute didn't show himself this fall, but my buddy did find one of his sheds last year, a few weeks after he last showed up on my cam and some 3km's away. Was really hoping he was going to show himself this season, as I'd love to see what his rack looks like now (if he is still around.)
