    Something difficult to perceive 50 years later is that in 1972, Heep and Purple were IT. There were no other band breaking ground in heavy rock like they did, except Black Sabbath, which stood for a different sound altogether, so both bands had a massive following by those of us who loved this music being explored. Synths were BARELY out - Ken Hensley of Heep used it on Demons and Wizards (Traveler in time) and The Magician's Birthday (Sweet Lorraine) and Jon Lord used it on Burn and Stombringer and on from there. They were obviously limited compared to modern ones, so both men relied heavily on thundering organ sounds - OK with me! - This is pretty much the birth of heavy rock with overpowering vocals - when Heep released Bird of Prey, they called it the Fjord sound - how people scream when they are dipped into a cold, Norwegian fjord.

    Uriah Heep has been one of my favourite hard rock and roll bands of all time (along with my most beloved one RAINBOW, only with Dio on vocals), but Uriah Heep is an awesome band, but we never go to investigate other bands as they may be no well known among rockers and heavy metal fans, like TOAD (Swedish band); this hard rock band is a great treat for the spirit of any rock and roll fan, they were ferocious on stage and played mainly hard rock/heavy blues but the band itself is a Gozilla monster full of electrical energy on stage when playing; try some of their songs, Pigs walk, Tomorrow blue, Who Knows and you'll see what I am talking about; also if you do a Genesis live version of their song The Knife you can listen to the pure row riff display of the guitarist in this awesome song.
    keep on the rock"n" roll sound.

  • @Jelperman
    @Jelperman Před 2 lety

    Ken Hensley, the keyboardist, was a first-rate lead singer in his own right and his voice meshed so perfectly with lead singer Dave Byron's voice that it's sometimes hard to tell them apart -kind of like the two girls in ABBA. Lee Kerslake and Mick Box (drums and guitar, respectively) were very good on harmonies. In 1975 they added John Wetton as bassist, but he was already one of the best lead singers in rock as well -for King Crimson and later for Asia. Uriah Heep was loaded with singers more than just about any other band, along with the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and the Moody Blues.

    It’s funny that the comment I want to make is the title of the first Uriah Heep song you reacted to, “been away too long“, haha. Was traveling, have just been busy. But I plan to get back into your reactions. To answer your question, they did have at least three guys, maybe four who could sing so that was more harmonies than multi-tracking the lead vocalist. Heep was my second favorite band growing up so here are some really good ones by them that you haven’t reacted to yet: if you want an epic, and it is worth the time, go for “Salisbury”; another epic, that I see others have mentioned in the comments is “July Morning“; here are some other really good ones, “Beautiful Dream“, really cool keyboards in that one; A personal favorite, very cool, “Footprints in the Snow“; “Simon the Bullet Freak“, cool; “Stealin “, their second most famous song; “Time to Live“, heavy, good; “A Year or a Day“, really melodic. “One Way or Another”, Great bass, heavy. “Firefly“ - organ, harmonies; Mellow but very melodic is “Illusion“; funky, good - “The Dance“. another beauty is “Traveler in Time“; A beauty “Paradise/The Spell“; Very unorthodox but really cool is “The Park”. Lastly “Misty Eyes - Great harmonies in that song. Use that as your guide and you won’t go wrong, I don’t think.

    Dude, I'm glad you got the name right! Yeah, the song is on the short side, but still rocks. They use it in encores even today! Suggestions are too numerous, but "July Morning, Look at Yourself, Sunrise, Traveler in Time, Circle of Hands, Gypsy, The Magician's Birthday, Pilgrim" are all from this lineup. They were known as "The Beach Boys of Heavy Metal" due to the fact that they all could sing and harmonize. David Byron had close to a 4 octave range, they adopted a falsetto that Mick Box called "crotchetto" to imply the effort to get there. They are still playing, but with only Mick Box as the lone original member. Stateside is sparse with mostly casinos and large clubs. In Europe, they have a big following. I have followed them since 1972 and even through ups and downs, they are still my favorite band. Looks like they might become yours too. Keep on Heepin' On! BTW they are major influencers of UFO, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Queen, W.A.S.P., Winger, Helloween, and many others.

    The Key Changes were a big part of this song. Killer Diller. That is harmonies and then some very and probably delay. Tape Delay at that.

      Very similar bands. 5 man lineup with vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums. The Hammond organ was common in both bands. Difference was Heep had all members of the band harmonizing on vocals.

    One of my favorite albums from that time. Someone was always blasting this album at the keg parties where all us desert rats used to gather and be wild. I love how Roger Dean used to sneak phallic images into his covers. Lol. Once you see you can’t unsee.

Back in the day they used to have live bands up there with hardly any cops either!! No better decade ever for music then the 70s PERIOD!!! Just had to share after reading your comment!!! Peace!! I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but just in case, ...Uriah Heep was a character in Dicken's ' David Copperfield' . A weaselly fellow. Not sure why they chose him to name their band after.....

    • @harrybendtsen5147
      @harrybendtsen5147 Před 3 lety +1

      The producer's (Gerry Bron) son I believe, is credited with the idea of Uriah Heep. They were celebrating in England, the 100th birthday of Charles Dickens in 1969, or something like that. The name sounded good and looked good in print, so they went with it. Having read David Copperfield, Heep was a fawning fellow who wrang his thin hands often and seemed to be scheming something, but also overstated his 'umbleness everywhere he went. I don't think they were out to emulate his persona, but the first album, UK version, was titled Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble.
