  • Although Ethiopia claims it now controls the northern province of Tigray, the conflict continues. Moreover, there are allegations that Eritrea is now assisting Ethiopian forces. This has led to accusations that Eritrean troops sent to Tigray have committed a number of atrocities, including a massacre in the historic city of Axum. However, for many outside observers, such cooperation might seem strange. After all, Eritrea and Ethiopia have a longstanding history of tensions. Indeed, they fought a bloody war in 1998-2000 that only officially came to an end with a peace agreement in 2018. But scratch beneath the surface and the reasons for Eritrea's involvement in crisis become clearer. So, why have Eritrea and Ethiopia united to fight the Tigray War?

The conflict in Tigray increasingly poses the threat of a major humanitarian catastrophe in the Horn of Africa. However, a desperate situation seems to be becoming all the worse with widespread claims that Eritrea has now sent in troops to assist Ethiopia and that they have been involved in war crimes, including a massacre in Axum. This has prompted demands for their withdrawal from both the European Union and the United States. However, the fact that Eritrea and Ethiopia are fighting alongside each other might seem strange given their past history. Eritrea fought a 30-year war of independence from Ethiopia and then Eritrea and Ethiopia fought a bitter border war from 1998-2000. But, as it shown, the issue goes back to the relationship between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) during their joint effort to overthrow the military government in Ethiopia in the 1970s and 1980s.

It's a return to the conflict in Tigray this week. Despite Ethiopian claims that the fighting is over, there's clear evidence that the war is continuing, and that Eritrean is now fighting alongside Ethiopia. But is this merely about personalities and historical grudges, or is there a deeper reason for Eritrean involvement? Do let me know your thoughts and comments below.

I do have questions tho: Could it be that there are 2 ongoing wars? One of them being between Ethiopia and Tigray and the other between Eritrea and Tigray? If this would be the case would this change anything? And if this is 1 war could mister Abiy Ahmed be held responsible for these war crimes?

    • @JamesKerLindsay

Great questions Brian. It does rather look that way, doesn’t it. Really, I think this is a joint effort by Abiy Ahmed and Afwerki to break the power of the TPLF once and for all. But it does also raise a very real question about Ethiopian complicity in these alleged atrocities. I think many are very surprised and more than a little disappointed about Abiy Ahmed’s role in this, especially after his Nobel Prize.

    • @JamesKerLindsay
      @JamesKerLindsay  Před 3 lety +6

Hi Aleksandar, great question. The interesting thing is that it should actually have a path to full independence. Ethiopia is one of the very few countries in the world that permits secession under its constitution and even outlines how it can happen. Tigray could pursue that route. But one gets the sense that while the constitution permits secession, actually making it happen will be something else. In the meantime, it’s hard to say what will happen on the ground. Information is very limited. But I get the sense that the Ethiopian Government and Eritrea are doing their best to destroy the TPLF and stop the region from becoming a state, real or de facto.

@@JamesKerLindsay as someone who has been closely following the development in Ethiopia, I can confirm that, when the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed came to power one of his top priorities of reforms that he set out in his plan is to rewrite the constitution by removing Article 39 which currently permits regional states within Ethiopia to secede if they choose to do so. The current constitution of Ethiopia was drafted by Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) when they were in power for 27 years and they were the ones who introduced Article 39 despite opposition from majority of Ethiopians. The introduction of Article 39 was part of their long term strategy for independence but it lacked the support, vison and a roadmap. Beside all this Eritrea (Ethiopian's northern neighbour) is key actor and inadvertently have saved the Ethiopian state from total collapse, by supporting Ethiopian forces to hunt down the TPLF fighters. This is no exaggeration because Ethiopia was totally on the brink of collapse as it was fighting with TPLF to the north, OLF (Oromo Liberation Front) & Bishangul Gumuz to the west and Sudan to the North West. But of all the threats TPLF from Tigray region was the one considered to pause huge threat and they have been largely eliminated with some pockets of resistance here and there. Now Ethiopia can focus on fighting the threats coming from Bishangul Gumoz, OLF and Sudan. I believe as long as Ethiopia and Eritrea remain at peace and continue to work closely both will have better future ahead!

And it will be interesting to see what happens to Eritrea when Afwerki finally departs the scene. In the meantime, the current deal between Addis Ababa and Asmara to attack Tigray is really disturbing, especially given Abiy Ahmed's Nobel Prize. If I was conspiratorially minded, I might be tempted to now wonder whether the peace deal was always about ousting the TPLF from Tigray?

During the Eritreans war for independence from Ethiopia the Amhara ethnic group had complete rule over Ethiopia. Other ethnic groups like the Oromo and Tigray needs and interests were often neglected. In Tigray, with its proximity to Eritrea and shared language, the rise of regional political awareness started along with Eritrean independence movement, in fact there were Eritreans who were half Tigreans through intermarriages, and also Tigreans who were born and grew up in Asmara and saw themselves as Eritreans and joined the Eritrean Liberation movement. These Tigreans would go on to become the core cadre of the TPLF with a great deal of help from the EPLF led by Iseas Afwerki, who's half Tigrean on his mother's side. The EPLF trained and armed the Tegreans and led them straight to Addis Ababa to take the seat of power. The border war over Badimme was seen as a betrayal of that alliance...hence the deep animosity towards the TPLF from the Eritreans. Likewise, the EPLF has long cultivated friendships with the Oromo. Many young Oromo were forcibly conscripted to fight the Amhara led war (and later under TPLF rule over the border conflict) in Eritrean. Many died believing they were fighting "petty criminal bandits" but tens of thousands were taken prisoners by the Eritreans who treated them fairly and educated them about what their fight was all about...and they were free to go back to their homeland. That is the genesis of the goodwill between Abiye and Iseas. Infact you can trace Eritrean influence on many other ethnic groups rise to demand their rights in Ethiopia today... It's not just a simple "an enemy of my enemy is my friend". It's a long thought-out strategy by an ingenious political leadership of Iseas Afwarki.

      @@JamesKerLindsay Thanks for the reply!
Is it even possible for Eritrea to annex Tigray, from an international law point of view? This is kind of a similar situation with the Pashtun ethnic group of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
I'm an Eritrean from the Tigrinya speaking ethnic group, I see the Tigrayans as part of Eritrea rather than Ethiopians. For all of our history we were one with the Tigrayans, but Italy and later British divided us into two countries for their own interest. We the Tigrinya speaking ethnic group in both countries wanted to be fully unified in Eritrea and develop our culture, language and work for prosperity. This division has caused most of the problems that happened in the past years (leave alone ''the Bademe conflict'' its a made up story, the conflict was about who rules over the Greater Eritrea/ Greater Tigray between Isaias and Meles, and it resulted in a military stalemate). Isaias Afewerki has ruled Eritrea since then in an iron fist manner, right now in Eritrea there is no constitution, no law of order, no private businesses, seaports are closed for the last 20yrs, construction industry is none existent for the last 20yrs. Isaias is doing all sorts of ethnic shuffles/ ethnic based settlements throughout the country. At this time Eritrea is a halted state.
Eritrea as is, is a failed state because it lacks the human capital with its all potentials for development and prosperity. However, with unification by annexing Tigray, there is hope that we will be dominant militarily, politically and economically in the region in a short period of time.
Yes, there are some Tigrayans wanting Tigray to break away from Ethiopia but this is impossible, for many reasons. At the same time many Tigrayans are happy to see Tigray being part of Eritrea, as their frustration over Ethiopia is increasing, plus they don't want to be a minority of Oromo and Amhara any more.

Journalists were actually filming the celebration on Nov 30 and several video interviews disprove Amnesty's account of pandemonium. There was no large scale "atrocity" /whatever that means thesedays/ and celebrations were normal albeit with understandably fewer congregation.

To this day Turkey refuses to acknowledge that it was genocide despite the fact as many as 1 million Armenians were killed because of their ethnicity and religion. It is a shame that Armenian genocide, doesn't get as much media coverage in as the holocaust during world war 2. Even in Ethiopia there is a small community of Armenians whose forefathers were orphans survivors of the Armenian genocide and the former Emperor of Ethiopia (Emperor Haile Selassie) adopted them and provided them home and schooling. As an Orthodox Christian from Eritrea, who shares the same faith as the Armenians, it makes me feel bitter to learn how much they have suffered at the hand of the Ottomans and even the recent conflict with their neighbour Azerbaijan who was largely supported by Turkey was a double blow. I hope one day Armenia will be powerful enough to defend its territory and win back the territory it lost (Nagorno Karabakh). God bless Armenia !!

Hey Sir, I'm really glad you've decided to delve into the HoA politics. Do you moonlight as a Soothsayer because the 11:55 "it's clear that" really threw me. Don't think it's clear at all. That's OK. Can't even bother to get in the whitewashing of the historical context so I'll turn a blind eye to that. The TPLF "commanding victory" was a good joke to be fair. It sorts of confirms the bias. That and the complete absence of the list of crimes that the TPLF commited in their not so recent two handed strangulation of the HoA (I don't think Hold or Tenure is explicit enough). I really wish I had the time to shed light on it all but I thought the saddest thing of all is that you weren't even bold enough to decide whether certain elements of the story are true. Firstly, your title makes an assumption that it's true, then you pose the question if it isindeed true, then you say it is true "allegedly" explaning the Nation states in question have "vehemently" denied it. Then you go on to say 'allegedly 'a couple more times but somehow you've convinced yourself you've said something somewhat definitive with no more than 5 sources and no physical evidence. But it's OK cause the "sanctimonious" Amnesty International/America/UN said they have something. Fair warning, the others won't be as kind as me 😉.

It’s not very often we see western analysts provide this much context and nuance when discussing the complex relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia. My only gripe with your video is the downplaying of atrocities committed by TPLF while holding federal power for 27 years and specifically, in this current conflict. It is known that TPLF militias have been engaged in the systematic killing of Eritrean refugees in Tigray and also committed the Mai Kadra massacre. It is by design that the mainstream media chooses to overlook these atrocities as it goes against their narrative painting TPLF as victims.
