    Thank you Gary, Matina is one of my favorite. I grow in zone 4b, it is always my first rippen tomatoes growing in nice grape, also about 2 inches diameter. Grew more than 9 feet tall in 2022..

    I have also grown this variety and absolutely love it. Mine are usually 2 in in diameter or a little less. I've had only good experiences with the health of the plants and flavor and texture of the fruits. I highly recommend the matina tomato and greatly appreciate this video. I will be watching more of your videos.

    I live the SF Bay area and always grow this variety. Produces early and keeps going. Plant is somewhat determinate so it stays of manageable size. Not much sucker pruning here either w the potato leaf variety. One of my favorites these days

    Looks good Gary, might have to try that next year since we have a short growing season. Got a big beef tomato growing in a pot, its taller than me, 5ft tall and has approximately 25 tomatoes on it.

    Good video. Thank you for sharing. Have you ever tried a variety called Mexico. It's a large red beefsteak heirloom. Suppose to produce heavy yields. If you have, let me know your outcome. Again, thank you.

    I like this series on the various tomatoes. I have pretty much determined that my Japanese Black Trifele tomato is going to be a keeper. However, I am trying a Siberian as my early tomato. I haven't found it very early or productive. It is a determinant heirloom variety. It is suppose to be 48 days but my trifele's will have ripe tomatoes on t long before the Siberian's produce. Have a great day!

      My Black Trifele is looking good with lots of green tomatoes. I hope they turn this week.

    Definitely a variety I'm going to try out here in the Pacific Northwest next year. This year I decided to experiment with some of the more cold hardy varieties along with some of the early varieties. I was in such a hurry to get them into the ground that I didn't label anything. Guess I figured that I would just remember what was what. Or I just thought that I could Identify them when they started producing. So far all that I have been able to identify a tree the Golden Nuggets. Lol, oh well there's always next year.

      Roger Smith The stick I put in are just for that. I always think.... Ill remember and I dont. LOL gets worse with time too.

    What will be the maximum height of the plant?

    Thanks for the video Gary. I'm always looking for a good heat producer, easy care and good flavor. Have you tried Thessaloniki? So far I like it and it seems to do better in the heat. I did have issues at first with what looked like Early Blight. I treated the plant and once the weather heated up it cleared right up. Thessaloniki it's the heaviest producer in my yard, not including Cherry tomatoes. I liked the flavor much better than the Homestead. I'm still waiting on Boxcar Willie. Once more thanks for sharing your take on different variety of tomatoes, very helpful.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před 10 lety

      I havent tried the Thessaloniki. Ill write that one down. I like the homestead but better flavor makes it worth a try.

    Do tomatoes normally grow to their labeled size lol? My Roma tomatoes are never as big as the packages says they should be. What makes tomatoes grow bigger? Is it just the seed that determines the size or what nutrient does the plants need to grow larger fruit?
    Thanks for sharing, great looking tomatoes! I guess you guys dont have stink bugs out there? The leaf footed variety.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před 10 lety

      RLSgardener LOL I think they pick the biggest one and go by that. The more tomatoes on the plant the smaller they are (besides cherry types). So... it probably all works out in weight in the end.

  • @nomisage
    @nomisage Před 10 lety

    hey gary, it doesn't seem like you removed the suckers on this plant and let them grow into several stems. does it depend on the situation regarding type of tomato or location you are in?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před 10 lety

      Simon L I didnt. I dont know this variety as well as with most of my new plants. So I typically prune to remove density and allow for air flow and no bottom leaves. Thats why I dont believe there is an EXACT way to prune. So I reduce suckers and leaves and sort of sculpt may way through it.
      Guiding principle for me is like I said the splash barrier on the bottom and air flow through center.

    oh man.. those look great! mine yellowed out!! yikes… and i clipped all the yellow.. i put some epsom salt in the water… i added egg shells…. but… the tomato plant is looking bad still…. the tomato was good.. i have 4 left….. but.. not certain it is going to survive… it is in a gallon drum…and i have that cage thing on top….what do u think???should i put it in the ground???

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před 10 lety

      ***** If you fed it and watered as you did.... you gave it what it needed. Liquid fertilizer is good. 1 gallon is small. I recommend minimum 5 gallon container. I would try and get it in the ground. Also if its been really hot that makes leaves yellow. Yours is a Matina or another type?

      I did try the Mexico. It produce some big tomatoes but it wasnt a huge producer. I only tried it one time. I like "aussie' for big tomatoes and good production.
