I've been working full time as a DJ professionally for over 2 decades - one thing I would always say to DJs who value financial security; DON'T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET I've had venues ask me to do 5 nights a week for them. On one level , it is a great opportunity to get to know a venue and crowd really well, and have a very decent income. But the downside - VERY repetitive, and if a new promoter/manager/owner comes in and doesn't like me, I'm screwed, and if the venue goes out of business - also screwed I always try to have a good variety of sets at multiple venues - even sometimes I keep things ticking along with sets every few months at places I don't love DJing at, just to keep that link alive, because you never know. And I try my best to hook up as many DJs as possible with gigs, because eventually they start offering you things back, and you always have the option of reaching out for help if you need it - I don't do it transactionally, I just do the good turn and ask for nothing back, and the good karma eventually comes back around.
You didn't mess up. That was an unfortunate result of a bunch of unprofessional bullies abusing their power. The girl thing would never be an offence in any professional environment. Office romances happen all the time. I lost a residency in Enfield simply because I politely disagreed with the managers idea of what music she thinks need to be played. This, after every single song she ordered me to play emptying the dancefloor without fail, and me having to use my judgement to mix in tunes to bring them back. She apparently wanted me to only play "classy cheese music", which doesn't make sense!! Club managers are some of the most single-minded & horrible people I have come to know in my professional life.
This reminds me of when you walk into a large store and see a security guard ‘patrolling’…walking round the store - because a supervisor told them “can you walk around more, please.” A more experienced security guard will stand near/in view of the door and never move from there. Thieves watch, out of view…waiting for the guard to move. Then they flit in and out rinsing out nuff things! My point is some busy body will give idiotic tips, even when it blatantly has a negative outcome.
You are truly a God send with all this incredible information. You are correct. You may be down, but you are never out. Losing a residency is a temporary set back. But you gotta have a positive outlook. I can remember I had a residency working for a promoter for 10 years. He first booked in 2007. We did parties everywhere, but by 2017, Our working relationship soured. He fired me and said "Your career is done. You ain't ever going to work anywhere". I was like damn. There goes 2K a month, but I took his threat as fuel to ignite a fire. I ended up picking up 5 residencies. Imagine had I not been let go. Keep on rising. Blessings Cee B and Happy Holidays
I just walked away from my residency because after 7 years, the customers now more than ever are just super rude and entitled. Totally killing my desire to play for them anymore. I’m sorry you’re goin thru this. Outta see if can start securing some out of town gigs and perhaps larger college parties. Getting on the road in 2023 might be nice.
as a brother you can’t blame us. First red flag you said was “sneaking around” we don’t like that shit. Also either your hiding something ur not telling in the story or she’s dated bad DJs in the past and he’s just over it with her and DJs. Now stop pouting and go club knocking. If ur good ur good, simple.
Nah imo don't shit where you eat. Keep work and play seperate. If you guys fall for each other then keep it behind the scenes. There's power dynamics at play and ego will ruin opportunities for you. This happened to me when I played a gig in Miami. My friend who I brought with me started hitting on the headlining djs girlfriend when he was playing his set. That ended with the entire lineup and staff looking at me weird by the end of the night because one or two people embellished the story. I never brought that dude to another event with me. He was supposed to represent me and my brand.
I'm sorry but bad advice! Never play for free. Work yourself from the bottom and make sure to make your worth visible. After hitting the dive bar spots, word started spreading around and promoters were asking to book me... I didn't jump at the opportunity, I made them beg to the point I was getting 1k per gig. Never sold my self less, and even got to do gigs at Soldier Field. And remember it's always business first and never do anything for free.
@Julz Cez, that sounds really great. where's a 1k a gig, i will be there too. know your worth is the most important advice. also, you gotta have in mind that vinyl records are still the most expensive part of the dj expenses. 'cause every time you gotta buy the latest releases. at least 300 €/$/£ to 500 €/$/£ gotta be paid, depending on the hours you mixin' the night. newbie, beginner, semi, or pro, i don't care.
The main lesson is: never put all you're money on 1 horse. Keep doing garage parties, connect with the crowd, give them business cards/stickers with you're name(website etc.) on it...Just remember: if the dude from the old venue connects you, double you're price..just bisnizz no offends. Also start connecting organizations who are doing huge events during summer. Suc6 and a blessed 2023
You didn't get let go because you were talking to the promoters sister, you got let go because of how you handled the situation. If you had simply gone to the promoter before sneaking off with his sister, been upfront about your intentions, and followed it all with the simple question: would this bother you in any way? Or would this be cool with you? Technically he can say no he does not want that reality to exist at which point you have to choose between your residency and the woman you were interested in.But at least by handling the situation maturely / logically you would have afforded yourself the choice, and choice is a luxury.
In other words, “don’t Shit where you eat” I hate dealing with promoters which his why I changed up and started getting booked for corporate residencies where I’m In Control of bookings and I work directly with the owner or GM.
Now that you’re not a resident there, there’s nothing stopping you dating her. 🙂 Wishing you all the best 💪🏻 Believe me, everything happens for a reason. There always something good in most bad situations.
Took me almost a year to get another residency after losing my first one suddenly. Losing that first residency can be a confidence killer depending on what ended the residency.
all what u said bro for real it's happening to me I got a lot of stress but I keep moving on never stop making some mixtapes thank u for making this video I'm not alone cheers!
i am a techno and house dj since 3 years in switzerland. this fucking dj business is hard in the beginning. the first 2 years i was struggling to get some gigs. and you are right with the the thing you said, take the opprtunity to play for free at a club. after the first gig in club i played regulary. so what i wanna say to you is this business has so much ups and downs you just have to get straight forward and try to contact other clubs. i think you can. you promote yourself very well. so good luck
Sorry bro for what you going through and picking up after that. It's true I've heard my dj mates going through that years ago but for me one thing I'm still doing dj is you never stop for anyone even it's for a big money but it's the long range so that you don't end up like this. Keep striving bro and thanks for the message for those who are going through this. Cheers mate 👍
I went from making no money to $8k to $0 to $5k to $0 to $10k a month! It’s an unstable industry but keep your mind open and NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK. You got this 💯 don’t spend all your money at once and keep your head up
I was 18y old when I had my first club residence back in '96. 2 nights each weekend from 10pm to 6am. My mother had to lift my curfew so I could work. You could have said to him you love his sister and you aren't interested in someone else and you'll still love her after he fires you and that you see a future with her. But you chose to whine about money proving the promotor's point of you getting complacent. A club residence is not a simple task long term. You have to visit other venues with the promotor to understand which direction he wants to go in the future. You didn't make time for that. You banged his sister instead behind his back, proving you're not professional. I see a cascade of bad decisions. Even after you read this, you still won't take accountability.
This is a great video man. I experienced something similar not too long ago. Promotors/managers changed at a venue I played and went from a guaranteed set a week to one a month to one every few months. Luckily pushed hard with networking and meeting new promotors, managers, bookers now I’m doing 2-3 sets a week.
I think I clicked the right video for me. I had a residency back in 2018-19 then it was all gone, not because of any mistake, but because of covid. Plus, when covid came, my ex gf just broke up wit me. And it all came falling apart. But fast forward to this year. I'm slowly climbing up the ladder again. But still not having a residency. But thanks to this, I'll apply everything you said. I'll come back to this comment if I'll have that residency.
Legit for sharing the story. Some people will see this and pinch themselves afterwards to make it stick. Some will just think, ok don't do that......and before you know it... the stardom creep gets u.
Brooo you’re still going strong man. Look where you’re at right now 🤌🏾❤️ also would it be possible for you to do a setup video of how you would connect a deck like the DDJ400 to shisha lounge/bar speakers or even portable speakers. I’m desperately trying to start performing at smaller venues before going to clubs in the future 🙏🏾 Could you please go over the cables that are required and even if I need to buy a mixer? 🥲
Relying financially at all from djing is a bad move all together. Even if you are successful you will never have financial security, being a promoter can be even worse risking financial input and overheads. Best off doing it for fun and enjoy everything while it lasts because nothing in this business does.. ever
Thanks for creating this video it was very motivating to hear your story. I had a weekly Saturday night event for the past few years and it's ending in the new year (bar got sold). Fortunately, I have a couple of other residencies (the pandemic really showed the importance of diversifying venues). However, complacency is my main enemy at the moment. Going to take your advice and push through.
You have time to read this.. Ive been producing music the last 11 years and ive been djing around 4 years or so. Because I am a producer I developed reletionships with rappers, promoters etc and this brought me guest DJ sets all around Europe. The hardest part for me up to this day is still getting a Residency to a local club. Doing guest shows is lit and pays good but trust me you need to have these residencies if you want the cash to come in weekly. Somehow you have to gain access in the qlicue that runs the nightclub you want to play at, no matter how good you are as a DJ trust me P&R is way more important to get into the payroll.
Absolutely love your channel your definitely a big inspiration to me as a beginner DJ. Your very down to earth have good vibes. Keep bringing the videos.💯

Never s__t where you eat my friend..it’s an old man saying, but! They have made all the mistakes we are ever going to make… listen to the old men!11 And your mother… She knows how women think! I subscribed
It doesn’t matter how good you are, sometimes 50p Joe could come along and just take your residency because he’s a bit cheaper and that’s what Cubs want these days
The problem with me is the content cause I don't want to do the content, I'm more of a word of mouth dj but I rather have someone do the content for me
I've been working full time as a DJ professionally for over 2 decades - one thing I would always say to DJs who value financial security; DON'T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET

Totally agree bro, your rite 👍🏻
Exactly my opinion absolutely the promoters fault

One thing I've ealised over the years is that clubs come an go, managment changes, promotors change anything can happen to a residency.
I almost lost my ear residency from the lack of pop filter in this video.

Yep never shit were you eat. It's maturity, respect.
You shouldn't mix business and pleasure. Seperate personal life and relationships from your work.
It happens but we keep going. The love for the art is the most important part.
1. The promoter is a tool.
2. NEVER JUST MESSAGE!! Go in person and introduce yourself. Messages are too easy to ignore and you will get blown off.
In other words, “don’t Shit where you eat” I hate dealing with promoters which his why I changed up and started getting booked for corporate residencies where I’m In Control of bookings and I work directly with the owner or GM.

who hurt you
This is my baseline. Are american men soft? Do you have emotions? I rarely have them..

Had similar experience 😢
With that could not even remember anything to play again when ever I go near my tables 😢
Legit for sharing the story. Some people will see this and pinch themselves afterwards to make it stick. Some will just think, ok don't do that......and before you know it... the stardom creep gets u.
My only advice! DJ every set like it’s your last. Your DJ age is young, great learning experience
Don't poke the payrol! Rule number 1
One door closes, three new ones open! Head up!
It's the nature of the job unfortunately, my biggest lesson as a DJ has been don't Sh*t where you eat
Nothing wrong there, maybe not clever, but definitely not wrong. Keep going!
Brooo you’re still going strong man. Haters and undercutters a disease in the industry.
dat classic line 'it just got long!' respect brudda
Really good video and good tips. Maybe the moral of this story is.. don’t mix business with pleasure.
I’ve lost my residency as well just because I accepted a booking from a different company. Mind you, I didn’t have an exclusivity contract.
Dollars? Your accent made me think you’re down the road to me in London 😄
Thank you so much for all the knowledge brother.
I’m glad your pushing harder in a new direction! Plus you can create your own events and music. Trust me. His loss
Never poop where you sleep ... Yes, never put all your eggs in one basket... Because All Good Things Come To An End...
That wasn’t a slip up, shorty was hatin’
Never fish off the company pier. There is always a new girl.
Brave sharing difficulties, thanks.
100% love this message! Keep Pushing!

Hook in up with a baddie and DJ residency sounds like you were in cloud9
Epic motivation.
I’d give you one very important piece of advice. Don’t shit where you eat.
Absolutely love your channel your definitely a big inspiration to me as a beginner DJ. Your very down to earth have good vibes. Keep bringing the videos.💯
Why are djs accepting $200 to dj this isn't 1992. Djs are messing up the game no matter if you are new or not
Great advice in this video my brother. I’m looking forward to hearing about your new residences. God Speed
I like that you bring to yourself the responsability of the consequences of your acts, even tough you didn't made anything unethical ou imoral. that bring success.
Keeping it real, that promoter was wrong because he let his personal feelings get in the way of business.
Never mix business w pleasure bro
This story is amazing man. Wish you all the best!
I always stayed away from the garage girls when I worked.
I have a very strict rule when it comes to people I work with and dating. Don't. The risks are greater than the rewards. The other thing I am strict on is drinking. I won't drink anything if I am at a work event because you never know who you are going to run into or who knows who. What you are saying here is 100% truth and all DJs need to heed this in the worst way.
damn sorry for your troubles. don’t sh*t where u eat can be a hard life lesson.
Some good wisdom that can be applied to many situations s in life! Right on man.
2000 a month is defiantly not a small amount however, have you ever considered getting into the wedding industry? I make about 2000 a wedding and while peoples taste are perhaps more...bland...still great way to earn money and DJ the clubs during the week.
Respect for putting this story out
Thanks for sharing your story. Love the channel!
I was in another country and learnt how to dj and became a legit dj earning 5k a month in the biggest club in that city (China,Nanjing) then went back to my country ,I've showed all clubs my videos and pictures but I'm not getting a chance telling me to wait, its like I've gone BACK TO ZERO, so frustrating
Come on man, you can’t keep playing Venga Boys and Baha Men and expect to keep your residency!
Glad you can see it was on you. Lesson learned; don't shit where you eat.
I watch this every time change happens. Turn on the decks and it al melts away. So facts. 6:02
I subscribed because you gave open, helpful, and loving advice. You're great man!
Yea, you can't do that. Too many women in this world. I learned early in life don't ever let women get in between you and your money
Happened to me… I sat back and laughed a few months later when the venue had lost 80% of its Saturday night customers..6 months later the venue got a new promoter 😂
Should be more professional. It’s like security guards dating staff. Messing with managers/promoters family is an obvious no-no. It’s a disrespect.
Keep ya head up / I've even been band from a country before & got wayyyyyyyy passed it...
When you message the venues how do you approach them/ negotiate your pricing
In chicago the clubs seems to go out of business every 2-3 years and then they re brand and fire all their djs. Always have many options.
You got one gig….. you’ll get another…. Also…. Never put all your eggs in one basket…..
Thank you sir!
Great video bro keep your head up and stay positive new doors will open! 😎
Business and pleasure my man….business and pleasure
😂😂
I had a residency in a pretty big London club back 2010 ish. Owner tried to mug me off one night with a bullshit ultimatum. "Take your pay and don't come back or take £100 and you can continue to work here"
Told my man shut up give me my money and the look on his face still makes me laugh after all these years. Club was Cargo and the owner was called Rocky. Proper bell end lmao my mate took him to court for wrongful dismissal.
Thanks, that is very motivatuonal 💪🏼
Awesome advices and motivation
Never dip your pen in the company ink.
Not sure how it's your fault. All power to you.
Im a Resident DJ at a club 3 nights a week ... my question is , Now that youve lost your gig , are you still talking to the sister ?
Never s__t where you eat my friend..it’s an old man saying, but! They have made all the mistakes we are ever going to make… listen to the old men!11 And your mother… She knows how women think! I subscribed
I'm knowing 🤣‼️
Promoters decisions were led by emotions. You did nothing wrong. He just wanted his sister for himself!
Lmao should’ve just kept talking to the girl after tht point to get him pissed even more
'Cherchez la femme'
Similar thing happened to me.
Yep that is your fault.
Never mix business with pleasure
Fuck all that desperate messaging if you’re the best you’re time will come
It doesn’t matter how good you are, sometimes 50p Joe could come along and just take your residency because he’s a bit cheaper and that’s what Cubs want these days
I wonder what the promoters version is
The problem with me is the content cause I don't want to do the content, I'm more of a word of mouth dj but I rather have someone do the content for me
$200 for club dj is not alot of money. QBC DJ agency pay that for club dj;s they always have jobs. normally in dumps. but keeps you djin.
