Not really, no. I don’t know if they’d add an extra charge for it or not, but that’s still not allowed. As far as law goes, he’d need to get a ride, take a cab/Uber, use a train or something, or just walk there. Driving wouldn’t be allowed except in a life or death scenario.

Actually I'd probably delete this. It aged poorly. He was shocked because he didn't even know what was going on as he legally got his license back in 2022. The court forgot to file this hence why everyone was so confused. I'd def delete this comment so you don't look like a hater or an innocent man.

Honestly that Judge makes up for the defendent. hes calm, he seems to have a sense of humor or outrage, i can't tell which.
For anyone seeing this now, the reason the defendant seemed so in disbelief was not that he realized he was being moronic but rather there was a clerical error, his license had been reinstated two years prior to this event but due to an issue it showed up as being suspended, therefore a mistake on the legal system on not him. Sadly most will not see this and continue to harbor judgement of the driver.

judge Simpson is one of the best judges to watch. i live watching his CZcams streams. he's tough but also fair and compassionate.

And if you think not having tests to grant licenses is stupid, thank you. You then do believe that some people don’t deserve to drive. Now if a guy who’s a bad driver can’t drive cos his state finds him irresponsible, why can’t a guy who’s done something bad (such as DUI) not have his driving rights taken away?
He said he was driving his wife to get medical help and was not thinking or caring about his license being suspended at the time. He also stated that he shouldn't have been charged for driving with a suspended license in the first place that this hearing was about as the courts had decided to lift the suspension 2 years ago, there was however some kind of error that caused this to not reach the Secretary of the State and so the lift was never actually applied to his record.
Imagine if this video had an immediate disclaimer that there was more info and the situation was not as it was initially presented, this video might seem to be a full journalist report and correct and not leave for the comment section to inform. Imagine.
I love this Judge. He is fair always, sharp as a tack, shows true compassion for people in the court and is so funny! While I see snippets of the proceedings as often his rulings are televised, this is a court room that I could watch all the time.
He is so used to doing whatever the hell he wants he forgot to pretend he’s a law abiding citizen. The look of shock on his face when called out on it was priceless.

Not true. In his later hearing it came out that, not only is his right to drive suspended for previously driving without a license, but he's likely never even had a driver's license. They have records of him getting non-diver state ID's going back to when he was a teenager. In Michigan, you can only get the state ID if you don't have a driver's license. So, while he tried spin it to make it not look so bad, it's actually much worse.

A news station looked into this story and interviewed the man. "What were you thinking" He replied "my wife was having a medical emergency was all i was thinking" His license was suspended 12 years ago for non payment of child support. He paid and had the license re-instated more than 10 years ago in court. But the attorney generals office never did the paperwork and here we are. The world mocking some guy that did nothing wrong and a judge that didnt even look into it before putting him in jail.

That driver must not have REALIZED he had a suspended license! Even the look on his face seemed to show shock.
He didn't appear to be outrightly disrespectful to the court so I really think he was just confused and thought his hearing protected what he BELIEVED was a valid licence *UNTIL* such time it MIGHT be proven he WAS under a suspended license.
The judge should have talked to him before ordering a decision.

They continue: “Under this constitutional guaranty one may, therefore, under normal conditions, travel at his inclination along the public highways or in public places, and while conducting himself in an orderly and decent manner, neither interfering with nor disturbing another’s rights, he will be protected, not only in his person, but in his safe conduct.”
Unfortunately for the defendant, these are not normal circumstances. He has a suspended license. That is the plain truth.
I also think that you are unfortunately misrepresenting the court case of Thompson v. Smith. If you actually read the court case it has to do with a defendant that does not have a license. The defendant in this case does have a license, the license is merely suspended. No parallels can be drawn between the Supreme Court case and this case. They are covering completely different topics.
Do you truly believe that people that break the laws of the road and endanger you, your family, your children, your community, and everyone else in this nation who engages with driving or is in the proximity of driving should not be held accountable to these laws? A suspended license is not a punishment for the defendant, it is a defense of public safety.

There must have been a reason his license was suspended, so I’ll trust the Judge who’s sending him to jail for outing himself. If only all criminals were held to account, we’d live in a just society.
