The Future of the MOTHER Series

  • Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings recently came out on the Nintendo Switch, so what could this mean for the future of the series? For MOTHER 3's localization?
    More people than ever have legal access to Earthbound on Nintendo's best-selling home console, which is a pretty big deal when you consider the series' history. With this new spotlight, will MOTHER 3 be localized for western audiences? Could a remake of the MOTHER series be helmed by someone other than Shigesato Itoi, like an Indie Game dev? Is this release just a formality for the Nintendo Switch Online, which only happened to slide in right before the closure of the 3DS and Wii U Virtual Consoles? What is the future of the Mother Series?
    Join me on this part essay, part rant, part explication of the MOTHER series' future, where the only thing for certain is uncertainty itself. We'll discuss Mother 3 localization, EarthBound remakes, Nintendo release policies, Shigesato Itoi's time in the game industry, and Reggie Fils-Aime himself.

So, could someone give the short version of "Why Mother matters?", since to me it just kind of seemed to be something extremely strange and neat that Nintendo made when they didn't have a clue over what they wanted their games to be.

    I wanna give my two cents on the Mother 3 localization debate bc it's something I've had a lot of time to think about lately! So I think that a lot of people like to point at the more controversial elements of the game as a "smoking gun" of sorts to de-legitimize the game's chances in the west, and while I can understand the perspective, I feel like there's a clear disconnect between what Nintendo's (Specifically, Earthbound's) localization process looks like VS. what people say it's like. A game's localization isn't as simple as "hmm, that's not acceptable in this market, throw it out entirely!" but rather a massive game of compromises; Nintendo's hypothetical request to make the game more appropriate for a western market comes in direct contest with Itoi's original vision which is where a lot of people expect the conflict to be, yet both sides have shown willingness to concede in certain regards before. For instance, Nintendo back in the early days of the medium had a massive list of things deemed unacceptable in games meant for a western market, including things such as references to drugs, alcohol, weapons, nudity, etc. As for such, several references to religion, gore, and nudity were stripped from Mother's localization, known now as Earthbound Beginnings, yet there are several instances where the rules were seemingly bent for the project, such as the reference to Duncan constructing a "Strip Joint" and underage drinking at the Live Show, both of which directly contradict the same rules Nintendo held as the golden standard. Obviously as time changes it's not really fair to sit down and say that the things they did in the 80s still apply here, but it's important to distinguish that the process of localizing such a game is far more complicated than people like to believe, and is as I said earlier, a massive game of compromises, and as a result the blame likely isn't to be entirely, if at all, placed onto the content of the game. Personally speaking, a while ago I did a creative exercise for a now scrapped video of mine to see what an official localization of Mother 3 might look like and created workarounds for several of the more controversial aspects of the game: Tane Tane Island drug trip? Have the party get stung by poisonous sea urchins after being whisked away by Master Eddy! Certain subtext too dark? Tweak it a smidge to make the implications less obvious! While I am by no means a professional localizer by any sort and this was solely for fun's sake, the fact that me, sitting at a desk, at 2 am, half asleep, being fueled solely by the power of a calorie free energy drink, was able to think of workarounds for the commonly pointed out aspects that may cause the game issues in the western market more than anything shows that there are ways to make Mother 3 localized. Moreover, if I'm able to do it while certainly not at my peak performance, certainly a team of professional businessmen and localizers can make something that meets both sides standards, right??? That's why I really don't think that it's directly the controversial aspects that are holding the game back, however, the extra work needed to be put in by the devs as a result of the material is, in my opinion, the true culprit. Business meetings are messy, you have to convince these people to abandon other plans to meet in an office and discuss something, that in some cases, isn't guaranteed to come to fruition! Itoi is a busy guy, he has his own company to manage, projects to oversee, and god knows what else, so convincing Itoi to meet at Nintendo to discuss a game project that has clearly had its issues prior is a lost cause in a way. Perhaps people have made pitches to Itoi prior about getting the game localized, yet they weren't what he wanted to see, meaning not only has Nintendo paid people to work on something that didn't work out, but Itoi has lost time he could very well be spending doing something more productive than game negotiations gone awry. Perhaps Itoi or Nintendo refused to concede in an area of utmost importance, whether from an artists or business perspective, meaning that as long as one side refuses it's at a stalemate of sorts. What I'm saying is that Mother 3 is far too expensive for it to be worth it, regardless of how well Earthbound or Beginnings perform on NSO, precedent had been set with the games performance on Wii U not directly correlating to 3's localization chances, I highly doubt that the games performance will influence the decision one way or another. Mother 3 is a money pit in a way, not only would you have to go through lengthy and costly negotiations to get Itoi and NCL to agree on the matter, the Mother game's localizations are monoliths of checks and balances, being super heavily monitored by Itoi and his team to ensure that the unique writing style of the game is retained across regions, which adds even more people to the projects payroll! The optimist in me wants to say that "Mother 3 will eventually leave Japan", but even if they can negotiate terms, unless Itoi decides it best to leave the localization entirely up to the Treehouse (something incredibly unlikely imo) the realist in me is saying that it's far too much of a financial risk for something that is unlikely to pull a profit. Im hoping I can come back here in like 5 years and see that I was horribly wrong tho!!

      Mama Louiji!! my boy! thank you for this thoughtful comment. youve gotta be careful mentioning Mother 3 around these parts b/c im going to want to talk about it all day long.
      your thoughts on Mother 3's performance not necessarily mattering reminds me of the interviews Reggie did in 2013 and 2015, relating to EB and EBB respectively. I remember around this time people always saying things like, "Hey, EarthBound sold pretty well, so this only looks good for MOTHER 3, right?" and of course, reggie always had to deflect, but i think he really was telling the truth when he would say, "well, we're really happy with how earthbound performed, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything."
      i know reggie gets saddled with this a lot (he's practically the protagonist of this video), but as time goes on, i don't think of those interviews as deflections anymore. i bet reggie was like, "YO I AM JUST LITERALLY TELLING THE TRUTH."
      however you should definitely always release Mother 3 videos you come up with at 2 am while drinking energy drinks bahaha

    • @MamaLouiji
      @MamaLouiji Před 2 lety +6

      @@CoyoteCocktail No joke, it was those *exact* interviews I had in mind lmfao. I remember people at the time chocking it up to business talk, not confirming or de-confirming one way or another, but even back then I remember thinking that there was a level of certainty behind what he was saying that I don't think standard business talk was the best way to describe it. Kinda reminds me of the entire situation surrounding Okami 2, where multiple people have said on several different occasions that upper management of Capcom would have to be entirely changed for it to even have a chance of coming to fruition, likewise I think NCL would have to either have a massive upheavel in company mission or a massive shift in leadership for Mother 3 to have a spark of hope seeing as this is a decision seemingly entirely out of NOA's hands.
      Also, I have like, three (four???) 2 AM nonsense Mother vids ive been working on and off of for a while, and seeing as it's my bread and butter, they're all EBB related haha. Hoping to get at least one of them out this summer but the other ones have just kinda been rotting on my desktop waiting for me to open the preliminary thumbnails I had made and gain extreme motivation all of a sudden!

    The thought and time put into this video is REALLY well done so thank you for making it and thanks as well to Kody, Katie, Jonathon, Melo, and Post Elvis! While I knew and know there would never be an official localization, you've filled in the holes of my knowledge on why that may be. It really is that simple isnt it? Effort outweighs profit.
    Below are my thoughts as an intense Mother series fan! It's quite long:
    TL;DR: I talk about Itoi's "passing the torch" to others, Undertale, localization, remake, my experience researching Itoi's interviews and analyzing Mother 3 for my university essay, and general takeaway from the video.
    You've given me new perspectives to think about. When it comes to a Mother 4, I was pretty optimistic in the beginning too but as I read more interviews by Itoi, he really put his foot down and I had no choice but to believe his word. He emphasized the point that he was passing the torch for others to make something with the feelings they took away from playing the series just like you said and they had. After I read those interviews I heard about Undertale and the amount of references to the Mother series packed in that game is insane.
    There was a fine line to Undertale being a complete copy of the Mother series vs an original game and Toby blew originality out of the water no matter the amount of references he packed into it. That point you made about the Mother series being a first of its kind "indie" makes a LOT of sense. However, for me personally I dont really crave more unique games made by unique individuals when Im looking for something Mother series. I crave Itoi's playfulness and sense of nostalgia for a game I have only had a taste of for the first time. It's incredible and so so unique like you point out. Even at 21:03 you really get the sense where the Mother series' essence comes from if you get me. Just by his mannerisms, you can just tell. When he made the announcement that the Mother series was coming to switch and when he jumped for joy twice, you could feel that same energy unchanged years after his games' releases and development. He really stayed true to himself when laboriously making those 3 games with his teams.
    While I would love a localization, I'm not really vying for it honestly. I didn't click on this video to learn if there would be a localization because I feel like there just wouldnt be (but a part of me hopes this statement ages like milk aha) but I just wanted to hear more about the series. The reason I wanted a localization was so it would be more easily accessible to people and so that there'd be more people to talk to and bond with Mother about. I don't so much mind this now because I figure there will always be Mother fans even if there may be few but honestly when has the fandom been BIG yknow? There was this quote by Itoi I read related to the hobonichi and Mother back when hobonichi was only translated to English by an american girl working with Itoi's company iirc. Itoi said something along the lines of, when he meets mother fans it's as if there are more people in the playground. The way he put it was so warm and playful. I never found that quote again and it was so beautiful. But basically, he meant that anyone who played the series was welcomed warmly into this small part of the world.
    Instead of a localization, what I would love now is a remake in all honesty. Curiomatic's "Welcome to the world of MOTHER 3" really put that idea into perspective and they really did a phenomenal job. Or even a release of the N64 version of Mother 3 though I understand the code and all that is probably even more messed after seeing a pattern in your explanations. Despite all this I know these ideas are not the future of the Mother series. When I think of the future of the Mother series I am always reminded of Itoi's quote about passing the torch. Imo, it has been successfully passed to creators like Toby Fox or Omocat, and even to us and it will continue to be passed in some shape or form, like through Itoi's protege Yasuhiro Nagata as you've pointed out. When you mentioned Mother 4 is our lives and what we do with it, I agree with this also. What do we do after? It's up to us! Even so, there is a lot to think about the series. It really is packed with meaning if you're able to sit down and give some thought to it.
    I actually wrote an essay on Mother 3 applying Itoi's themes, artistic choices and interviews about Mother 3 to texts related to my class. One of the aspects I focused on was Itoi's choice to start the game with the Mother 3 logo in cold, manufactured steel and the gradual transition back to the natural where the logo is made of wood at the end of the game. Even though Itoi has spelt out the Mother series' future clearly, I strongly feel the Mother 3 logo further emphasizes his point. Even when you read the progression of the previous paragraph (when I talk about localization and remakes to Itoi's speech about passing the torch) it really is reflected in the logo's design from cold and rigid to natural and warm. Itoi has done his work, he is tired and instead of forcing him to make another game unhappily, he has provided us the materials (the wood). Will we light it and take the torch from him? Again it is our choice. If you think about it, this is really Itoi's energy/essence if you get me. It really is so so cool.
    Think the biggest takeaway from your video for me is, I need to play Mother 3 again haha. I resolved to never play the game again not because it was bad, but because it is a masterpiece and I didnt want to saturate my experience like when you listen to a banger of a song too much. You just lose the feeling you first had on the first listen. It seems like I am missing a lot by thinking like this though I didnt know there were changes in dialogue when you talk to certain characters at different times!

      wow!! thank you so much for this amazing and thoughtful reply. i may return to this a couple times to respond to you, so that i can address a few things you pointed out, but the first thing i want to respond to is something you said that really hit the nail on the head: even with all these other cool unique games to play... when you want MOTHER, there really is nothing like MOTHER. I think part of my plea at the end of the video was also to myself. Many of the games I showed at the end I haven't even completed. I've tried them out, and liked them, but I often go back to games that are familiar to me.
      in many ways, this is fine! i love earthbound. i love mother 3. i even love EB Zero! when you want what the MOTHER games offer, you truly can't find it anywhere else. (That said, if you haven't checked out Deltarune yet.... you've got to). That said, you should definitely play MOTHER 3 again!! even though it's scope is a little smaller than EarthBound's at times, trust me: there is so much in there that will surprise you that you missed the first time. play it slowly!! treat it like a short walk you take every day.
      anyway. there is a lot to respond to here so i may come back to your comment!! though i also love that quote about more people being in the playground. I also think I'm understanding more and more how Itoi approached making the games when i think about that concept of MOTHER 4. "Today, we had some ridiculous thoughts. Today, we felt sadness." in a way, i think he wants to games to remind us of our actual lives, and that's probably also why he loves encouraging players to talk to all the NPCs, in the same way it's important for us to reach out to one another and show interest in the lives and doings of others. etc etc.
      so much to say! mother is truly a treasure chest. thank you again for this awesome comment!!

      @@CoyoteCocktail Honestly your point about the concept of Mother 4 is interesting because I just realized that’s EXACTLY the same way Itoi markets his company Hobonichi xD. It’s actually really funny because if you know the Hobonichi, he’s all about using Hobonichi the way you want whether you leave all pages blank, scribble some random words from time to time, or use it as a dedicated log book of your thoughts and to do lists! It’s the quotes especially included at the bottom of pages. It’s all just so similar. Shoulda known Itoi would just do Itoi things haha. Off topic tho xD
      Best bet Ive been following Toby’s work! The most recent chapter was fun and funny too! For Mother 3 I didnt really have a game plan on how to play it again but taking it in like a short walk I’d take everyday sounds like a plan. I’ll even record it in my Hobonichi!!

    This was a great video on the future of this series! Being an Earthbound/Mother fan has been a wild ride. And it's crazy how just getting one of these games re-released can feel like an insane effort for whatever reason. But in the end... whether we get remakes, new media, successors, or whatever... I'm just glad people can experience these games in their most pure form. Even if I'd prefer that we'd be able to buy them because of my thoughts on game services. And yes... Mother 3 being in the weird limbo its been in is very unsatisfying. If that game alone could be in the same position as the others, I'd feel so at peace. But I'm just happy Earthbound has kept up the love it has for so long by its fandom. Some people just label us as hopeless people clinging to a dead horse, but I see it being one of the most passionate and amazing fandoms I've ever been apart of.

      I know! I think some people think we must all be crazy, but, as another commenter pointed out, Shigesato Itoi just wanted more people to be playing in the sandbox. I think MOTHER fans feels the same way after we've played the games: we want to see the games succeed, we want to see the games remembered, we want to see them shared with as many as possible, so more and more people can have a chance to connect with them. i don't think the games are perfect, nor do I think everyone will like them, nor do I think it's like, mandatory to care about Mother or anything like that. im not one of those people who needs everyone to like what i like.
      I just can't help but get excited when the games see official recognition! it warms my heart to see those moments where MOTHER gets its time in the spotlight. i also feel like as i get older, the games get better, so the more i revisit the series, the more rewarding it becomes.
      anyway. its late and im rambling. thank you for your comment!!

    I feel so incredibly seen with your comments about the Mother 3 rumor mill and breadcrumb trail. Every year at around E3 season, I used to think back over the list of Mother 3 "omens" that had occurred the previous year--there was always at least one. And now E3 doesn't even exist anymore, so I sort of vaguely keep track year to year. It's kind of like a hobby--I know it won't happen, but wouldn't it be so cool if it did? I feel like if there actually was a localization effort that got cancelled, it would sting to hear about, but it would be a fascinating story.
    I didn't realize that Mother was partially owned by Itoi. The delays in Virtual Console releases make a bit more sense now. Perhaps Itoi saw that Earthbound flopped in the US after all the work he personally put into the localization, and gave up on regions outside of Japan. It's great that the intense overseas demand for the game after the Japan-only Wii VC release reached his ears, and that he now knows how much love the game gets across the world.

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před 2 lety +1

      hahahaha i am so happy that someone understands me! Around 2014-2017, I can't tell you how many times I put myself through the cycle of excitement and disappointment with Mother 3 and Nintendo presentations. There truly were a few years there, like you said, where there was always at least ONE tantalizing reason to hope for Mother 3, or so it seemed. But nowadays, like you, I kind of do still treat it like a hobby. Though I think official localization is ~ unlikely ~ I still enjoy following the bread crumb trail, however nebulous it may be. At this point, it's just a silly way that I relive my childhood. And if it WERE to ever actually happen... i don't know. I might transcend this physical form and pass beyond to a new realm.
      I'm also happy that Itoi knows western fans love the games. Honestly, I still think it is an incredibly exciting time to be a Mother fan. When the EarthBound and Mother 3 plushes release on May 25th, I really really hope I can get them before they sell out on Hobonichi (I mean they are making a BONEY plushie!! how could i not want it!). With the recent leak of the Switch GBA Emulator, I'm sure we'll see Mother 3 released on the Japanese market yet again. Which, of course, will get the rumor mills turning all over again, as they will until the end of time lol

    I would actually like Mother 1 to be remade. As much as I do like it, there's of course the encounter rate, some frustrating navigation, and a lot of menuing. It would be cool to see it get the Zero Misson treatment as a remaster with some bonus meat to the story.
    And hey, there's a possibility of new games, but they'll just need Itoi's blessing. He just said he wouldn't be the one making them, so....you never know...

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před rokem +3

      I agree!! I have recently been playing Mother 1, and it soooo deserves a remake. The more I play that game, the more I love its story and its presentation. While it is the most flawed of the games on a technical level, I really think its story is just as good as the other two, and it deserves the chance to be explored even more deeply.
      As far as new games, I really do wonder what we might see Nagata helm in the coming years. A Mother 4? Maybe... but a remake of Mother 1? I could absolutely see that.

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah, it's really too bad how such small changes could impact the Mother series' replayability in such HUGE ways. Like, I'm used to the first two games so I'm pretty good at using the systems, but they've definitely aged worse than many of their contemporaries. Every time I play the original Mother 1, I'm blown away more and more, and I can totally see why it was such a significant and beloved game for Japanese players, but man, I just can't really recommend that game to anyone lol
      Looking at the SMRPG remake, it's clear that you can remake an SNES era game successfully by just making it prettier and a little more accessible. I truly believe that a remade Mother 1 and Mother 2, with some decent marketing, would perform well on the Switch.

This video was fun, kept my attention, and provided enough references within my sphere of cultural understanding that made me feel as if I was interacting with an Old Friend. Its always good time to find an online vid that shows passion and knowledge about any subject, especially something as cool as this. Now I must admit my Earthbound experiences are limited to the ramblings of some guy a long time ago in a freshmen dorm room. Which revolved around David Lynchian visual influences in the game (I must admit some underage drinking may have been involved). But those conversations stayed with me and led me to this vid. Absolutely excellent video. Truly worth the watch, and it's certainly very informative for those unfamiliar or more so recently interested in the series.
    I would also like to share my thoughts regarding a potential Mother 3 localization. (I'm definitely not pausing my college assignments to write about this, lol)
    I personally believe one day the time WILL come where an official release will be bound for fans outside of Japan. That said, there's a lot that will need to be done in order to get the ball rolling, as your video detailed several times. I think Jonathan's idea at the end of the video makes the most sense for this reality, but I also think it's very possible that Nintendo could create a translation and put it out as an addition with a GBA online service, making their extension plan more valuable to the minds and hearts of many. However, I also think it's possible Nintendo releases it in an un-translated state. Like with some games already, such as Mario Picross on the SNES online service, the game could very well be given to all in Japanese-only. Now, this would be a strange thing for them to do, yes, but I don't believe it's outside the realm of possibility. Nintendo is a very strange company with some very strange decision making, and that's why I do believe there are ways they could pull off a re-release of Mother 3 outside of Japan, be it translated or not.
    The fans do what Nintendon't. We have fan projects for remakes, fan sequels, and inspired games overall. I mean, come on, Megalovania is literally in Smash bros, and that originated from an EarthBound rom hack. The power that fans have is enough to drive this beloved series far into the future, so I don't think there NEEDS to be a localization of Mother 3, but like you mentioned, I consider Clyde's work to be the best there can be when it comes to anything official, because it basically is.
    Anyways, amazing job once again on this video. It was fun seeing some familiar folks like Katie and Jonathan in here, as the both of em are really cool. Okay, that's all the time I've got. I gotta get back to playing Anim- I mean doing college work.

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před 2 lety +1

      this is an awesome, thoughtful response!! :) thank you so much for your kind words about the video.
      releasing MOTHER 3, untranslated, would be such an unexpected and bold move hahahaha. no one would see it coming! the other day I laughed when I saw someone comment on a MOTHER 3 video: "you know, we all could have just learned Japanese by now."
      the more i've had time to reflect on the situation, I think I lean toward Echoes in the sense that, right now, there really aren't any great options to play GBA games. Once we see that return, then perhaps we'll see the wheels start turning at Nintendo to get things in motion. The Switch's success seems like a cozy spot for Nintendo, especially if the console has an upgrade or two down the line, so it seems as safe a time, as lucrative a time, and as sensible a time as any....MAYBE.
      hopefully one day we'll be laughing at videos like this one, as we all play MOTHER 3 in English lol

      After having watched your prior videos, there's something else I appreciate about this video:
      Something about your voice in videos prior to this one rubbed me the wrong way. There's no real nice way to put this, so I'll be straight: in the videos prior to this one you had a bit of a "bitch" voice.
      If you've ever heard a furry speak out loud, especially the Kero the wolf zoo crew, or if you've seen videos of furry weddings or something, you'll notice that they all have the same sort of weak, bitch tone of voice.
      To clarify, you were nowhere near as bad as the universal furry voice, there were just some slight similarities which bothered me.

      @CoyoteCocktail  Před 7 měsíci

      @@theonlybilge hahaha omg this comment is amazing. i will say that i have not heard many furries speak, but i'm happy to know that my vocal delivery has improved! it's a little hard to put into words, but after I saw Running Shine's Ocarina of Time video, I felt like I was able to channel a different vocal style when I was recording. That video was really like a mini epiphany for me, and, after that, recording scripts like this became much easier.
      I will also add that, in my Mother 3 videos, I've always struggled to find the right cadence. Because those scripts weren't really written with CZcams in mind--they were originally blog posts that I thought I might compile into a free, book-length PDF. In a post Super Mario RPG remake announcement world, watching this video is rather interesting. Itoi needing to be involved with it as he owns half of it is very much akin to SMRPG with Square Enix and could be why we didn't see anything about that game for a long time as well.
    I suspect that a Mother 3 release in the west wouldn't just be an emulation, which makes it even less likely it will ever come this way.
    We have the fan translation though, and there are so many ways you can play it that if you want to, you can. Heck, you can even play it on an actual GBA with a flash cart or reproduction if you want to!

      Yeah, sometimes I'm hit with moments of gratitude when I realize that the Mother 3 fan translation actually happened. So, no matter what happens, at least Nintendo has never touched it and has allowed us to play the game.
      But a Mother 3 remake, though....... that would be amazing lol. I am very very excited to play the SMRPG remake. It looks so cute!!

      I'm right there with you! I want the world to experience Mother 3. And I agree--Mother 3 truly changed my life forever, and, on top of that, it's a seriously solid RPG. A lot of people say things like, "Everyone who wants to play Mother 3 by now has already played it," but I've always disagreed with that sentiment. There could be someone out there who's never given Mother 3 much of a thought, and that person could become it's biggest fan in the world. You never know!

    I remember renting Earthbound from the video rental store (a great place to try out video games), but the game was longer for me to play through than the rental period allowed. Unfortunately, we never saw it for sale anywhere. I'm so happy it showed up on the Switch almost 3 decades after I first played it. The Switch is my first Nintendo gaming console since the N64, and I'd always wanted to experience the entirety of Earthbound since those rental attempts at beating it (and seeing my save files erased between rentals!). I beat Earthbound just last week and will move on to Earthbound Beginnings once I've beaten Dragon Quest III on the Switch (called Dragon Warrior III when I was a kid, playing it on the NES). If anyone has other recommendations similar to either of these turn-based RPGs that I can play on the Switch, do leave a comment!

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před rokem

      This is a great story! I'm so happy you got to finish EarthBound, all those years later :) Since you have a Switch, you should definitely check out Live a Live, Undertale, and Deltarune Chapters 1 and 2. All of these games have really solid writing and music, with Undertale probably being the closest to Itoi's clever style. Live a Live is a super creative RPG that I think everyone should play once. To me, it's like a combination of Chrono Trigger and Earthbound.
      Also, I know this recommendation may be a bit silly because it's so obvious, but if you've never played Final Fantasy VII, you can purchase it on the Switch! I played it in its entirety on the Switch port and had an awesome time. You can also, I believe, purchase the remakes of Final Fantasy 4 through 6 on Switch.
      Personally, I am thinking of checking out Trials of Mana soon, as well as Dragon Quest 11.
      Thank you for sharing your story!!

      @@CoyoteCocktail Well the start was pretty slow, I kept getting my ass kicked by all of the early enemy’s but after I leveled up enough it was pretty fun. I was surprised about how long you are alone, I didn’t feel that I got Loid until like half way into the game and Pippi was on the team for like a good 10 minutes. Overall I thought the pacing was alright minus the start and end of the game. I was kind of bummed for how short of a time I had Teddy on the team. I will say my biggest gripe with the game was the random enemy encounters, there were times where I couldn’t even finish a step and I would immediately get attacked consistently, this was especially bad on the mount Itoi when I would get attacked by like 4 Stamen who always PK beamed Loid who didn’t have a Franklins badge. Was I missing a Franklins badge? I could only ever find 2. Anyway mount Itoi wasn’t too bad after I just stopped even trying to fight the hell spawns and just ran or 4th d slipped. I honestly had more trouble in Duncan’s factory where I got lost. I struggled on the final boss for awhile, I knew I had to sing but my party kept dying too quickly. It’s not until I looked through the PSI moves and used PSI shield when I actually got somewhere. Another minor complaint I had was how useless a lot of the PSI moves felt especially for Ninten. Anyway so I finally beat the final boss and it felt really satisfying. My little brother was watching play for a lot of the time and got especially invested towards the end because I named Teddy after him. He said he wanted to play the game on his own but I think it might be a little too hard for him. You think he would be better of just playing the 2nd game first? The popular opinion seems to be that that one is much easier and better.

    I should also point out that Nintendo was also disappointed with the North American sales of Final Fantasy 1 after going all out for in promotion and extras; Mother 1 was apparently going to receive the same treatment.
    Mother 2 Flopped in the west in part due to RPGs not being popular and coming out after or close to new consoles.
    Mother 3 was likely bad timing coming out in April 2006, and would have seen are release around the same time as Final Fantasy V and VI advance, which Nintendo was also published.

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před 2 lety

      Oh, I never even thought to consider the GBA rereleases of Final Fantasy V and VI--excellent point!! From that perspective, not only was the window rapidly closing for Mother 3 hardware wise, but there was also additional software of the same genre being licensed around the same time. Alas, Poor Mother 3!
      And yeah, had EarthBound hit its original release window, maybe things could have been different, but even then I just don't think RPGs were a big enough genre for western gamers at the time.
      News came out the other day that, apparently, Reggie had "serious talks" with Mr. Iwata about bringing the game West, and these discussions were what led to released Mother 1 in the end. Seeing as how Mother 1 and 2 are available on NSO, I'm pretty happy with that. Hopefully we'll see these games available consistently from here on out, but only time will tell.

    Great video!
    There is one thing I don’t agree with, though.
    At 30:52, you said basically Nintendo shuts down all fan projects except Tomato’s Mother 3 translation.
    I’d answer that Nintendo actually never shuts down fan translations and romhacks, for just any game.
    Fan translations and romhacks are generally distributed as patches. Patches are small files that only contain the changes their author want to make to the game. The user needs to obtain the original upatched ROM their own way, and then, they use the patch file to patch the ROM.
    In our case, what’s being illegally distributed is the original ROM, not the patch, and Nintendo already tries to shut down websites that distribute copyrighted games as ROMs.
    But when it comes to the patch file itself, it doesn’t contain original copyrighted material, so it’s harder for Nintendo to prove its distribution is illegal.

I was so caught up in trying to convince antipiracy folks to give the game a shot, that I didn't even realize I've played plenty of Fire Emblem ROM hacks through the years, and none of those have been shut down by Nintendo. You're correct in that it is definitely not applicable and arguable in the manner I've presented it.

    Ever since watching Chuggaaconroy's LP on the game, Mother 3 has become one of my favorite games of all time just on the story. I suppose that does mean that I could end up hating it should I ever get the chance to play it, but it still sucks that I'll never get that chance since the only way of doing that is via piracy, which I personally just can't condone under any circumstances.
    Well...IIRC the Switch isn't region locked, so if the game ever gets re-released on the Switch, you could theoretically learn Japanese and play it that way. But that's assuming a lot of things, not the least of which being the idea that the Switch will be around long enough for the Nintendo Switch Online Service + Expansion Pack + Portable Pack to be a thing and they even put GBA games on it. Of course, I'm mostly joking about the Portable Pack thing, but I also kinda wouldn't put it past Nintendo to make us pay more for Game Boy games at this point assuming they ever add them in the first place.
    Also today I learned that Earthbound was ~$80 upon its release in 1994. Considering that games rarely ever ask for more than $60 today without throwing in a ton of collector's items I will 100% believe you when you say that this is the main reason why it flopped assuming that this is true.

    • @CoyoteCocktail
      @CoyoteCocktail  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for your comment!! Yes, it is true that EarthBound was more expensive than most other SNES game back in those days. I'm not sure if any other games ever had larger releases like EarthBound, but, for whatever reason, the game and its strategy guide, and the scratch and sniff cards, were all sold together.
      I for one am incredibly excited for the GBA Games to be on Switch, not so much for Mother 3, but for the GBA Fire Emblem games, Golden Sun, and some other RPGs. If Mother 3 somehow ends up on there, amazing! If not, I'll keep going on as I always have lol

The video is SUPER well made and I highly recommend it, but the crux of the issue is that, according to his hypothesis, Mother 3's legal issues go much deeper than many assume, mostly in regards to the soundtrack. Definitely recommend!!

    And they missed another opportunity when GBA came out for Switch Online.

      i'm surprised it hasn't at least shown up on the Japanese NSO, but I have a feeling it will when the Switch transitions to its successor. In the past decade, I feel like Nintendo times its MOTHER stuff with relatively slow periods in their release schedule. Though, that could just be me trying to read into patterns that aren't there.

    Itoi is 73? Makes me sad to know he's growing old, but he doesn't look that old to me. Also knowing that Itoi is Itoi, I'm sure he has plenty of steam left and plenty of stuff to release before he dies.

      yeah, the dude is a dang powerhouse of creativity. honestly, I hope some of his novels and other literary work will be translated to English some day. I've read some translations of his short stories, but not much else. he's such an inspiration.

      this video would not have been possible without it hahaha. i'm definitely hoping to spread my wings and find different music for future videos, but RunningShine's scripting style, editing style, and background music are such huge inspirations for me. i was not able to envision how I wanted the video to ~feel~ without that music, and I am heavily indebted to its brilliance.

      Yeah, I agree with you though. I really do think now is technically the best Mother 3's chances have ever looked (which I say with like a million asterisks next to that statement). I would also love a GBA Switch option b/c I love the GBA Fire Emblem games

    SNES Classic player here, haven't beat Earthbound yet but I hope to do so soon! The metal pencil kept me stumped for a while. Love the game though, and it makes me laugh and cry.

      ayyy, an SNES classic player!! very cool. Definitely keep going--I always slow down in EarthBound after Fourside/Moonside, but there's still so much awesome stuff right around the corner!!

      i understand that, but Reggie has been so tied to Mother 3 throughout the course of his time at NoA that it felt fun to position him almost as an active "character" throughout this video. He is the person who ignites the Mother 3 fan in the stop motion video, after all, so Nintendo made the joke, too.

    I really hope they localize Mother 3, despite the fact that 17 years have passed, and STILL no localization.....
    Although, Mother 3 won't get localized.
    But I hope it will officially get localized because whenever I try to install the Mother 3 fan translation, my Mac OS just won't let me....
    Then again, it's impossible to download ANYTHING on a Mac, so double oof.
