- Here is a link to get the tiny crankbait from Amazon: amzn.to/2DoPhXR. I tied the lure directly to my dropper loop below the 2 gulp sandworms. For this setup, I used my usual 2 oz disc sinker, which lays flat on the sand and doesn't roll as much in the rough surf.
These redtails surf perch can be caught year round here on the Oregon coast. The best times to go fish for these guys are during an incoming high tide. - Sport
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup czcams.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
that was awesome PK! thx for sharing a new method with us.
excellent fish was stationed in Coos bay for a refit in the 80s ,was in the Coast Guard and was station in Alaska Kodiak i made three trips there to Coos bay, and i miss it, did some fishing there love those redtails, but Alaska had the red salmon and man was that fun kind of fish to catch, good eating ,,miss Oregon ,,thanks again for the great videos keep them coming
Love your videos! Tried the high/low over the weekend and caught 4 barred SP and a hali in the first five casts. I have a dozen or so small cranks like you have here and I'm going to toss one on this weekend. Thanks for all the tips!
Just started watching your vids and I must say Im hooked man. I've never seen anyone catch fish like you. You are truly a fish slayer my friend. Great vids. Subbed!
Nice! Learned another new technique from the best. Thanks PK, hope to see you down here again in summer!
I have learned a ton about Surf Perch fishing from you PK. I had tried a few times with absolutely no luck and was very discouraged from surf fishing for years. I caught on to your videos and I slay perch every time now. I just had to see a master work. Keep up the great videos you are one of my favorite channels.
Nice, thank you. It's always hard initially, but once you get it down, it's pretty addicting.
@@oregonlife hey browhat size reel you got there is it a 2000 or 2500
Helped you out and ordered a set. Thanks for showing those crankbaits in action.
Awesome video and nothing beats fresh fish!
Wow! that looked like a lot of fun. Thanks for the idea!
That amazes me that you can use a crank bait like that to catch em. Maybe I need to try mine out!
“I’m going to introduce you to my frying pan.”😂
Great video PK. You are definitely getting me interested in doing some surf fishing.
PK, THE PERCH SLAYER
Glad to have discovered your channel today.AWESOME FOOTAGE and Great deal$ on those small crank baits.👍👍
noob fishermen, love it and you started it all for me. Watching your techniques and applying it but not getting success. Its tough. keep it on going and fishon PK!
Can you sub to me I make fishing lures and I am debating on making a vid rn
Love your enthusiam mate...great vid
Sweet. Dude got me all pumped up!
Really like your catch and cooks! Should definitely make more of those! Even a collaboration with Fisherman's Life would make a great video!
Hey PK, just wanted to report that I picked up some of these and have been using them near Tillamook for the last few days.
fishing with the lure on the bottom and a sandworm on the top. picked up 12-15 perch yesterday and today. Most were on the sandworm but the lure must act as an attractant. Fishing has been very good. I would say about 5:1 sandworm to crankbait.
thanks for the tip.
LOL.. funny jokes.. stay safe out there!! Got me interested and order a set too!
I've used that very lure for bass in South Florida. I've even ran it along side mangroves in saltwater and caught plenty of bait size fish also.
After watching this last week I tried some crank baits in Newport Beach CA. No luck but no one here is pulling in surf perch in November. I used a 3" rapala and pulled in a yellow fin croaker. I was really surprised because croaker and corbina have smaller downward facing mouths. Pulled in another with a Crocodile spoon. I tried spinners too (based on the Rooster Tail video) but no luck.
PK has great ideas. Will keep trying. Thanks PK.
Awesome ! great catch ! Nice beach! Thx for sharing greetings from the netherlands!
Nice catch thanks for sharing the secrets to success
Killing it as usual PK
If anyones wondering, those crankbaits are perfect for panfish and bass as well. Even had some trout hit them. and i got mine for about 30 cents each from ebay. They are an exact copy of the Yo Zuri Snap Bean, which is probably better quality but much more expensive. I love how well the cheap chinese hooks hold up against decent sized fish, i havent had any hooks bend.
That's cool, PK, very cool!
I wonder if putting such a crankbait on an end of Carolina rig would work...
Haven't had much luck with cranks lately, but I'll give em a try on the St. Lucie river tomorrow morning.
have to try the cranks….used to do real good on the micro scroungers…..always closest color to under belly of sand crab…that orange red color
I been fishing with that crankbait and it works perfect..i been getting a lot crappies on rivers
man, that's awesome surf fishing like this can get you fish! i wonder will it work at my place..
They also work great for bass fishing I also have some sunfish and bass dessiguned one
Glad you're getting out fishing was slow for you for awhile we are going back down to Winchester Bay on the 31st for some crabbing and surf perch tide is wrong for crabbing but what the heck but its a minus tide so we can check out the beach we got 5 perch last time
Nice❣️❣️ going to order those!
Got yourself a new subscriber . Awesome video ! Keep them coming
thank you. tight lines!
Some good catches there .
Wooh Hoo 47,842 viewer! Enjoyed your video. Wished the perch in Texas got that big. Perch is some good eat'n. Tight lines bro.
Nice fish and video!
Hi. I'm new to fishing so I'm interested in how weather affects results. Why do you think it is the bites happen fast when storms roll in? What are the fish perceiving and why do they jump to the bait?
Very enjoyable video thanks! I may use this tactic over in the UK, I can see the multiple rig being quite effective here too. Do you get much fouling on the mainline with the hooks? Cheers.
No, I rarely get my hooks/leader tangled up. I keep that loop short and close to the main line/leader in order to lessen tangle.
LOL! "Gonna introduce you to my frying pan..." Great one.
Hi!Really amazing!I would like to know the road you have used!Best compliments!
I think it be cool to see you use more lures like this...really like this video
Yea, I plan to do more lure fishing for redtails. stay tuned.
Never thought to use small crank bait in surf . Gonna try it
I just received my tiny crankbaits. I think I'm also going to try them on my Tenkara rod on a local pond for panfish.
Just ordered my set of 10 from Amazon, ($6.99 w/ free shipping). Thank you for the tip from St Pete, Fla. 👍
Excellent video. Love when you experiment with new and different tackle. How can you tell the difference between male and female?
Here's a video I made: czcams.com/video/n0-6JRzNi8c/video.html
the joy of fishing
The mini crank bait worked so well, you could have put a second crank bait on. I wish you would make another video, using this crank bait..... try two on the line? Love your videos!
Awesome video! I'm vacationing in Mexico this summer, going to be close to the beaches, I'm taking my travel rod with me not sure what lures, baits to use any recommendations? I have a 3000 reel with 8lb braid? Should I beef up the line? Thanks.
Christian Sanchez p
Probably, or loosen the drag.
What pound test braid and what brand ? You representing the 503 keep it up!
Keep on fishing! The surf perch fishing has been excellent these past few weeks on the Oregon Coast. Look for new surf perch videos coming soon.
Stumbled on your videos and like the surf perch I’m hooked. Love your channel. What weight is your fishing line. I’m visiting Seaside this weekend. Any tips would be appreciated.
Great vid!
Sorry if this has been asked before, are you just letting the waves work the lure or are you?
PK, another great video. I love to fish on the CHEAP!!! I made a H U G E mistake a couple years back. I took my nearly NEW Stradic CI4+ 3000 surf fishing, and forgot to FRESH water wash it after a weekend of Sea water. I didn't use it for about (2) months, and then when trout fishing at Odell Lake for the seldom targeted MONSTERS!!! I've caught more trout over 2 - 3 pounds in the evening after chasing Kokanees all day. Back to my SAD story, well the reel was SHIT after that. Ollie Damon wanted $45.00 to tune - up, so I gave it to my little brother as a birthday gift. LOL. I said I was CHEAP!!! LOL. Tight Lines my friend.
Brood trout were just stocked yesterday for the last time until November!! All 10+ lbs... Waverly lake in Corvallis/Albany got some, st. Louis ponds got them and so did Sheridan pond
Ah, thanks for the update. But I've been having a fever the last few days. Gotta sit this out.
PK Yi dang! My dad and sister both had that on Christmas, doesn't sound fun.. get better
I enjoyed your video awesome fishing. Happy new year.
Thank you. Happy new year.
Love how you rep 49ers! 9ernation

i'm amaze you are able to go out there. been itching to go. thanks for sharing the tips. just ordered some after watching your video. is this south of Newport?
Yes, just south. Hope you get to go out, they are biting hot.
I’m headed to Amazon to order !
thats a wholeday of fish dishes for me
Looks like you had a great day, where was this filmed?
Those mini crankbaits must resemble mole-crabs to those perch. I just got some in to try on our Hawaiian Smallmouths but maybe I'll try them in the surf here too for some Papio action.
Thanks ok. Greetings from South Africa Leslie.
Great fishing
Could you make a video using a Carolina rig
Looks like fun.
nice , do you think , this set up can work at lakes ? freshwater ?
I think it will. Gonna do a video on it soon.
thanks, I sub. on your channel and gonna wait for your video
Is the Red Tail the preferred fish ? You said in another video you normally use just take the males, Is this correct and how do you tell the males from the females.
Hi PK do you still see the sand crab in this month ? Thanks
Very entertaining, thanks heaps !
I use those for crappues, stripe bass and sunfish. My set up ultra light with 2
Lb. Test line
I'mHim 773 is 4lbs or 6lbs ok??
its new to me.... best idea ever....
have you tried the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow for redtails?
I looked at the crankbaits, and there are floating and sinking ones being sold. Which are you using, floating to come up off the bottom, or sinking to get down deeper?
I just put them in water, and they float.
Thanks, going to order a set of floating ones then. They come in a variety of colors, and I noticed that the crankbait and the rooster tail you used were both red and yellow. Any other colors work well, or should I give the odd colors an air brush job?
PK Yi that made me laugh
Is cannon beach or seaside any good? Just getting back into fishing but also new to surf perch and don’t now any spots. Love the vids!
There are some current threads on iFish.net which discuss the current surf perch conditions along the Oregon coast with one focused on Seaside area.
Patrick Magee sweet thank you! I’ll go check it out!
"Gonna introduce you to my frying pan" nice.
That thing has the exact profile of a sand crab.
Hey pk do you know where I can find a downhill sloped beaches by chance? I have seen a few on our coast but I could never remember the names of any, and thanks for the great videos.
Most beaches along the Oregon coast are pretty flat, but 2 that I know are in LIncoln Beach (Fishing rock area), and Fogarty Creek park.
Awesome thanks!
Great Video
Dumb question I guess, but I'm from the mountains... how can you tell the difference between female and male silvers and red tails?
Hey Terry
Go to this link to see how to determine sex of red tails: theoutershores.com/2012/02/11/boy-meets-girl/
I made a video here: czcams.com/video/n0-6JRzNi8c/video.html
Just check under the panties
Dang, you're funny, Jay hhahahahahahaha
Thanks
“Introduce you to my fryin pan”. Nice. Hah.
what is your favorite beach to fish for the perch? going out this weekend.
Gold Beach.
I was thinking that those fish were hitting that crankbait because of the orange belly, it resembles a sand crab that is full of eggs. What you think about that? Nice video, happy holidays and new years. Pk.
Yes. My thoughts too. I always choose lures with a similar color to the mole crab eggs.
Now I have yet another fishing technique to try when the ice melts off the lake
Love your videos PK, how can you tell male from female on surf Perch.?
What size bait box do u use for you crab pot
I use the one by Danielson here: amzn.to/2CIUduM
you can fit about 4 chicken thighs in there.
Supporting a fellow khmer brother. Keep up the good work bong!
pk! Where you at?! Been waiting for a new video. Bottom fishing is open on the coast! Went last weekend with mild success. Grabing was awesome.
I'm here. Was pretty sick with the flu last half of December and early January. Just now recovering and getting back into fishing. Stay tuned.
Hey, PK, why don't you ever use a serious minnow lure like the Lucky Craft like the guys in California?
I like your style, but that chest cam is hard to watch. Maybe a head mounted one?
Anyway, still enjoyed watching you land all those fish.
Where were you fishing in this video? Bastendorff?
That crank bait looks like a sand crab, doesn't surprise me that they are hitting it!
Getting Bent With Bo
I was thinking the same.
Getting Bent With Bo ditto
it is actually cheaper on aliexpress like almost under a dollar but dont think they send to USA.
NIce fishing, what are the size limit we can keep? and how many per trip?
In Oregon, no size limit on surf perch. you can keep 15.
