    The reaction the 100s of cinema goers at my screening had at the end would shock The BBC, Bad Wolf & RTD to their core. Utter silence as we left & only negative reactions & expletives at the explanation for Ruby & the snow ❄️
    The Atmosphere on leaving was that of a wake compared to the excitement at the interval. I'm still trying to comprehend that explanation for Ruby & the lack of explanation for the snow, a 15 year old girl wearing a hooded cloak & pointing at a street sign in front of no one in the vicinity in 2004 to name her child 🤯 Im still in shock and it's 3am

    I completely agree with you this was absolute crap, for me this felt like the whole story was all about Ruby and her mother i did not care for that i'm so sick and tired with companions and their family dramas i just want to see the Doctor and his assistant travel in time and space fighting monsters with lots of death and none of this get out of jail free card which happens alot with this era Chibnall was the only showrunner that kept characters consistently dead i'm sorry but it's getting to that point where i think bringing back RTD was a mistake he's becoming a hack also what was the point of Sutekh? My favourite villain ruined I knew they would muck with that character.

    • @TheLibrarianOG1
      @TheLibrarianOG1 Před 2 měsíci +5

      I've been saying the same thing. People can hate Chibnall but he was consistent, his seasons weren’t centered around "special" companions. He introduced regular people and except for a bit of growth and courage, they came out of the Tardis, exactly as they came in, with most of their problems and issues still there, lurking in the background. That was important to me, because the Doctor can't fix your problems like that. And finally, when Chibnall brought a character or especially, a monster back, he knew how to use them in a satisfying way, even injecting some much more needed fear back into those monsters. People can say whatever they want about him, but he might be actually my favorite show runner of the three.

    I mean when it comes to answering "but what would make Doctor Who popular again?" Look at Pertwee's first season. Look at how popular Stranger things became. Maybe we need to pull back on colour and camp. Give a more grounded and surrealist doctor who series. And if well told, you'll probably have more non who fans be like "man, did you see Doctor Who? That was so creepy and cool" and it will grow out in a Stranger Things like fashon. I don't think it's a very hard equation to crack.

Reminds me of how people thought Batman was silly after Batman and Robin, but then low and behold Batman Begins and Dark Knight came out. I think how to do successful Doctor Who is very obvious. Russell has done this in 2005. Maybe pressure is what is needed at the minute. That 2005 series had loads of pressure when making it.

    This was the one episode I stayed up to watch because I was so excited. tbh I have some of the same thoughts as you on this episode, there were some good bits but in terms of the overall story it was just really uninteresting.
    It’s evident that Doctor Who can do well bringing back old characters (such as with The Toymaker) but I really think they need to look to the future, maybe even doing an entire series where everything is new, or more experimenting with unique concepts. imo when they did that this season (Boom, 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble) it really worked quite well.
    Higher rated episodes of this show seem to always contain new concepts (blink, silence in the library, heaven sent, family of blood etc.) although it’s important to remember those episodes would’ve been among other episodes where it was just daleks and cybermen returning - people like to see new things.
    I also think pitting the doctor against godlike beings in such a short space of time (The Toymaker, Maestro and Sutekh) kinda exhausts the show’s potential. The threat of the Toymaker was very clear in The Giggle, because we hadn’t had an episode like that in ages. Sutekh genuinely didn’t seem like a threat, even tho he’s supposedly like the most powerful one in the pantheon of discord. Each time the doctor faced off with one of these gods it just got less interesting or fun to watch.
    Anyways, pretty long comment so idk if anyone’ll read it, but just thought I’d get my thoughts out about the episode here. In short, it was underwhelming.

  • @Look_Over_There
    @Look_Over_There Před 2 měsíci

    So just my thoughts. Long post.
    I LOVED the first half Mel being a badass, unit going down. The scene with Mrs Flood Anita nailed it I honestly wouldn’t mind if she was the next missy. The scene with the spoon and the woman was brilliant her actress nailed it too. That being said. The second half really felt hollow.
    Sutekh shouldn’t have been on the tardis since pyramids of mars. He should’ve been on the tardis when it absorbed the flux. He could’ve been cast outside the universe when 4 defeated him. When division engineered the flux as a force of death in their base outside the universe he would’ve been able to ride it back in like the toy maker could because of the salt being cast where the walls were thin. The doctor threw his tardis in front as soon as it was released remember. That would have made it much more personal for 15 as it was HIS specific adventures that gave sutekh power and why twist only just started appearing. When 15 split the tardis in the giggle that really let him into her and allowed him to start his plan. His defeat could also have fixed the death caused by the flux too as he was linked.
    Rubys mum and the hooded figure should have been revealed to be two different people. A 15 year old in 2004 dressed in a Charles Dickens cloak pointing at a sign ? Still doesn’t explain her snow powers and why her memories are stronger than anyone else’s or maestros comments. The hooded figure could’ve been another osiran left on earth as a fail safe if sutekh returned. That’s why sutekh couldn’t read her or identify her. Ruby was actually left at a hospital or the hooded figure took her to do whatever it did and put her back and trying to be kind it chose what it thought was s random unwanted baby to use in the fight. When the doctor went back in time in the Xmas special to the church it sensed sutekh and sutekh sensed it which led to ruby being left at the church in the first place, a paradox. The eye of Horus that kept sutekh prisoner in the pyramids of mars was a ruby, ruby has the powers of a new eye hence her name and her strange abilities, she’s still a normal human and once sutekh is defeated she’s totally normal. She could’ve still had the scene with her mum AND a payoff to the mystery.
    I could go on overall the parts were there but it was a bit anticlimactic. Rant over lol

      And Sutekh didn't destroy every planet in the future until he appeared in Unit HQ and revealed the Susan(s) as puppets. Time has had many explanations in DW, but currently it seems that every action you take sends you into a new timeline, so when they witnessed Sutekh at HQ, then the effects of his power across all time happened, and it couldn't have happened before.
      He destroyed Earth in the past and the future because the Doctor had landed on Earth in the past and the future when he was clinging on to the TARDIS and was able to make a Susan.
      As for the mother, I thought the mystery behind Susan was a bit more in my mind than Ruby's mother, so it kinda took up the season long mystery spot for me. But I think it's sweet. The pointing at the sign thing is a little dumb, and feels cheap, but otherwise I enjoyed it. Ruby and 15 have been fantastic on screen together, and I hope she pops up later on. Hope that answers some questions!

      I think I disagree here. Ruby was saying that she was going to have a quick chat with her mum, and then take off again in the TARDIS, but The Doctor knew it was never going to be that easy - you could see him going "Yeah, right...." But the finding of her Dad made her realise that this was a seismic time in her 'normal' life, and she needed to focus on that for now. She can't have it all right now. Like a lot of RTD's 'people stuff' writing, he showed the reality of the situation. She wanted to keep travelling, and wanted for it to be possible to do both, but ultimately realised she couldn't. Real people behave exactly like that - often.

    Once again Bonnie Langford shone throughout this episode for me over everyone else. I liked it when Ruby met her birth mother, it was really emotional and wholesome, but I wanted more to the mystery. This finale was such an anti-climax, and it breaks my heart to say this, but a lot of this series has felt kind of diluted in my opinion. Also, why did Morris have guns? The character is a literal child and he was positioned right in front of a soldier's head, that scene just took me out of it.

    I thought the 14th doctor had therapy so the 15th doctor could open up more so why couldn't he say he loved Ruby back. IMO the closest the doctor has ever said I love you is the 12th doctor. "Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference " yet twelve is perceived to be the most emotionally distant of the new who doctors. That's all forgotten about because it's easier just to write the character as nice, cuddly doctor rather than show actual character progression.

    I have found in the past that the final episode - which is usually the second part of a two-parter- is underwhelming in comparison to the build up in the first part(s). The first part has all the intrigue and the build up, and positioning characters in certain places (literally and figuratively) and the end is just 'Big Battle / Defeating TheThreat'.
    I agree with the bits you enjoyed, and the Defeat the Monster Act was.....inevitable.
    I like the fact that Ruby's Mum turned out to be just an ordinary girl with an odrdinary story.
    I'm assuming that Mrs Flood won't be explained at Christmas, but will be an ongoing arc in Season 2.

I didn’t like how they resolved Ruby’s mother either, I feel like it has to be a little more interesting than just “she was just a 15 year old who’s still chilling living a normal life” after all that build up. She should’ve been extremely easy to find in that case.

    You know it's bad when Hamza doesn't end the video with "Can't wait to watch the next season of Doctor Who."
    The Legend of Ruby Sunday was a fantastic episode & it did it's job of being a cliffhanger well. Too bad it handed it over to Empire of Death. As a finale, it didn't do a good job.
    Now the episode isn't bad from start to end, there are some good parts imo such as starting the episode immediately where we left off, which you mentioned (Might be wrong, but I feel like that's something Moffat would never do), the panic the world is in which I have praised RTD multiple times in your past videos, the scene with the Doctor in space where he blames himself (Totally agree that the shot with the TARDIS open is beautiful), Colonel Ibrahim's joke and... no that's pretty much it.
    And with that out of the way, I'll just go through the episode based on the order its shown. Some are criticisms, some are things I would have rather preferred, others are maybe just jokes.

    • @Omni_G
      @Omni_G Před 2 měsíci

      1:33 I'm not gonna lie, I kinda thought the green in the TARDIS was a green screen for a sec
      1:41 No no, Hamza. You must remember (though maybe I'm misremembering). The Doctor will always go, "This is the greatest villain I've ever faced. There's no way I can stop it." Then at the end of the episode bada bing bada boom, super easy, barely an inconvenience, the Doctor defeats the villain in the most "wtf that's it?" way possible.
      1:55 It's funny when you rethink back to past Doctor Who episodes realising Sutekh was there (E.g. Utopia when Captain Jack was clinging on to the TARDIS, Flatline when the TARDIS shrank, every crossover with other Doctors after Pyramid of Mars that showed the TARDIS (Shoutout to Sutekh for helping the Doctor stop the Time War in The Day of the Doctor), etc.)
      "And I find that good." That line reminded me a lot of Saxon Master in Sound of the Drums when he said, "And so it came to pass that the human race fell, and the Earth was no more. And I looked down upon my new dominion as Master of all, and I thought it good."
      "And I swear to you, with both the hearts of the last of the Time Lords, I will stop you!"
      Ruby: "Why's he saying that when there's a chance his granddaughter is alive?"
      Mel: "No idea. Probably just being a drama queen. Not to mention he also knows his best frenemy the Master is still alive, though now a gold tooth."
      Ruby: "The who is a what now?"
      "I'll tell you a secret, Sutes. This feeling.... that you have now... this doubt.... have you ever felt so alive?"
      And after having this new feeling, Sutekh realises the beauty of life & becomes a good dog. The end. Yeah we never really see this being explored again. Well, the Doctor did end up being wrong on why Sutekh hasn't killed them yet.
      2:32 Oh my gosh! It's the TARDIS from Tales of the TARDIS! Quick! Everyone go rewatch the episode 15th & Ruby are in to play "Where's Mel?"
      "Ruby Roo! Ruby Roo!"
      Scooby dooby doo!
      2:48 "I learned math in school. Why do you sound so surprise?"
      3:02 What do you think she did Ruby? What do you think the angel of *DEATH*, a minion of Sutekh who is the god of *DEATH* who kept saying lines like "I bring Sutekh's gift of *DEATH*" do? Huh? What do you think she did Ruby?

    • @Omni_G

      3:24 Even though I love this scene, I do wish instead of focusing on the Doctor, they showed scenes of people dying. Some are running for their lives, some are cowering in fear with their loved ones, some are praying, some are rejoicing, some have accepted their fate. Heck, imagine if it's characters we know & love, seeing them turn into sand. We did see that with UNIT & Ruby's family, but I'm talking about characters from past episodes, characters from other planets like those the Doctor listed. The Cybermen, the Sisterhood of Karn, the Oods, the Daleks, any civilisation, unable to escape Sutekh's gift of death.
      3:47 I love scenes where the Doctor is screaming in pain & sadness like how 14th was screaming, punching, & kicking in Wild Blue Yonder, because it shows a more vulnerable & relatable side to the Doctor but something about it felt off. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Doctor shouldn't be screaming. I'm saying that I felt like it could have been done better. I'm not sure exactly why I feel this way, but currently upon rewatching the scene, I think my issue is with how his first scream ended, felt weird, though the 2nd scream was a lot better. Might also be him taking a step back to scream again. Would have preferred if during his first scream, he drops to his squatting stance used in the 2nd scream in a way that feels as if he lost all energy to his legs. He pauses for a while and the camera zooms in on 15th doing what he does best, crying but not bawling out, & then he lets out his 2nd scream which can still be heard after the screen fades to black. The clip duration would have to be made shorter to match the duration of Ncuti's scream, I don't think having Ncuti's scream match the clip duration would be better. Basically, the focus is on Ncuti's scream rather than the scenery. The difference between this & how it's actually done is that the way it was done felt like the Doctor stood up, took a step back to regain his voice so he can scream again. What I'm trying to go for, which I believe is what RTD wanted to as well, is the pause is for the Doctor to process everything, internally blaming himself, and trying to contain the anger, pain, & sorrow he's feeling but being unable to & so lets it all out in his 2nd scream, even if he doesn't have the voice to because what he's feeling surpasses what his voice is capable of.

      The scene with the Doctor & the mother, didn't hate it but nothing special about it to me. I did feel a bit weirded out seeing another person alive. Kinda thought apart from the Doctor, Ruby, Mel, Ruby's birth mother, Sutekh & his minions, the entire Universe is desolate. Especially since Sutekh literally says, "The universe stands silent, in death. Yet one thing persists. One thing keeps living, despite me." Apparently, Sutekh is wrong & there are multiple survivors out there.
      4:15 Personally, I would have just said "I'm sorry." Saying "I think she did." To a mother realising her daughter is dead is kinda like going, "Yep. Your daughter's dead all right." Like, it's one of those things where you don't have to explicitly confirm.
      "They say it travels, the death wave, down the family line. Except that this man, he said it's... it's... it's perverse, that's what he said, that it's so determined to kill that it can travel backwards... from child to mother."
      Apparently, Sutekh's gift of death is now hereditary? You don't really have to get caught in the duststorm, you just turn into dust any moment? Damn... Wonder if we'll ever see it again? Nope. Also, why does this whole scene feel like a side quest? You know those kinds of quest where you listen to some NPC & they go, "Thank you for listening to me, now I can finally pass on in peace."? Feels a lot like that!
      To be honest, because I couldn't really care much about this whole scene, I wouldn't mind if it got replaced with a scene of the Doctor, Ruby, & Mel on an apocalyptic planet scavenging for metal, with Ruby asking the Doctor, "Doctor, this has been the X planet we've visited, what are we here for again?" That way, not only can we see more of what Sutekh's gift did to the Universe & having his line of the universe standing silent in death be true where it seems like there are no survivors, Ruby's line indicates they've been searching for a long time & it wasn't just a lucky planet on their first try, that they've been actively searching for metal.

      "Cultural appropriation"
      It feels like the Doctor is saying the Osirans culturally appropriated Egypt but, correct me if I'm wrong, aren't they the gods the ancient Egyptians worshipped? According to the Doctor Who wiki, "The Osirans, ... were worshipped by many cultures across the universe, including on Earth in ancient Egypt." So, in that case wouldn't it be the Egyptians that culturally appropriated the Osirans? But even then it's not cultural appropriation. The Egyptians worship the Osirans as their gods, of course they're going to adapt to the ways of their gods. This line from the Doctor makes no sense at all.
      4:51 Damn... Ruby, the Doctor said your mama was so ugly even a god got clueless on what to do.
      4:58 I knew it from the moment I saw 2:51. Mel's high af. She was taking a few puffs when no one was looking. Kinda disappointed Sutekh didn't say, "Peekaboo" before "I see you".
      5:26 I like how the 2 decided to take off their overwear... for some reason. Like, "Oh wait before we go out, I'mma leave my overwear here. Don't want to get it dirty" "Oh yeah, good call!"
      6:09 Where tf did Mel get that black cloak from?!

      Now, let's talk about Sutekh's defeat. It's... underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, Sutekh being eviscerated in the vortex is cool & death to death brings life does make sense but... it's just how it's done. Firstly, it feels as if it's done too fast. It was like what? 2-3 scenes ago since we last saw Sutekh & the Doctor? Secondly, Sutekh has been hyped throughout the whole season as someone even the Toymaker didn't dare challenge, the greatest monster the Doctor has ever faced that can kill anyone with a breath, a being where even the Doctor himself said there's nothing he can do. Yet, here he is being treated like a dog. His defeat feels a bit too easy. Thirdly, death to death. Again, this makes sense, but, why would simply bringing Sutekh to places where his dust of death had hit bring back life? Sure he's the god of death but one doesn't die just because they're in the same room as him. It's his dust of death that kills you. If simply bringing Sutekh to places where his dust of death claimed lives is all it takes, then shouldn't the victims in UNIT be revived? I mean the god of death is there, in a place filled with deaths, why didn't Kate & the others get revived? Is this simply because Sutekh is in the time vortex? Can a god not control his own power? I just wish we saw Sutekh outsmarting the Doctor because everything just went according to the Doctor's plan without a problem. I can't be the only one who, after the Toymaker claims he dare not face Sutekh, thought Sutekh is way smarter than the Toymaker, yet we don't really see it. While the way the gods have been defeated so far are kinda lame, it's not as bad as Sutekh's. With the Toymaker, they had to opt for a simple game that opted more for luck since going against the Toymaker in an actual fight or a more strategic game might have put the Doctor at a disadvantage. With Maestro, the Doctor had to figure out the right combination of notes to banish Maestro, which isn't an easy feat due to the tremendous number of possible combinations. But Sutekh? A leash. What the absolute hell. Also, how exactly did the Doctor know when to stop lmao? Like how did he know "Alright! Everyone's alive again! Time to get rid of Sutekh!"? I do wonder if the show is going to use this as a way to bring back a villain that was once dead. Like I don't mean Mrs Flood who potentially might be a villain, I mean like maybe a villain in Classic Who or a being never heard of before.

    Had pretty much the complete opposite reaction. As far as Ruby's mom goes, I watched the commentary for the episode afterwards and Russell t. Davies said in a lot of ways it was his answer to the Star wars sequel trilogy where in the second movie they say that Rey's parents are nobody and she's just a normal person able to use the force and do extraordinary things and how he hated it when they went and undid that in the third movie to make her palpatine's daughter and So he wanted to do the opposite with Ruby.
    I thoroughly enjoyed the episode, but I thought it was cool that they brought back Sutekh and I know you didn't care for the original episode when you watched it so I can understand the difference in opinion there too. I don't think life on Gallifrey was restored because it was the master who killed them all. Not sutekh. I think only people who sutekh directly killed came back to life? I don't know? I don't even know if I care anymore? 😅

    I enjoy this final episode. I don’t know about everyone else but I was disappointed with Ruby mum just being ordinary because I was expecting something big out it but I just glad Ruby got her happy ending. I cannot believe he was on the Tardis all that time since I started watching Doctor Who since 2005. I don’t care what other people say. I thought Ncuti was good as The 15th Doctor and this series was good. I do think they need to step Ncuti Doctor up bit by showing his dark side a lot more not that I am say he didn’t in this series because he did but I want to see more of it and I want RTD to focus on The Doctor a bit more in the next series, not the companion.

      @@joesmith8600 I didn't feel that Chibs gave me anything nearly as good as 73 Yards, Dot & Bubble, Boom or The Devil's Chord... I even thought Space Babies was fun. In my view, if any of those had appeared in any Chibnall series, they'd have been considered stand-out episodes.

    • @TheLibrarianOG1
      @TheLibrarianOG1 Před 2 měsíci +1

His stories were grounded and he is the only to take the Doctor on an actual character journey that I actually liked. Hate him if you want, but he wasn't a bad writer and he had good arcs for his characters. It's ok if you disagree, don't really care.
