I saw him a few years back and I've never laughed so hard during a concert in my life, though Garth Brooks is up there with humor. Billy Joel is a riot and a great show.
I was at the show and I loved this moment. This is the kinda stuff I love at shows, such a real moment and Billy was hilarious. I see many concerts every year, but nobody can entertain a crowd like him.
Actually it was a technical difficulty. He is using a computer monitor in front of him to help him with the lyrics. They were located on the ground at several places on the stage. There is also a monitor/screen in his piano. He has been using them for years. Some of the fans in the first row were leaning onto the stage and one of them accidentally unplugged the one he was reading just to his right. That is when you see him grab the mike and try to make it to the other monitor so he can read the lyrics there. The only problem is that one went out as well and he could not read it there either. That is why he then started mumbling the words. The tech guy you see appear from behind and bends down just to the left of the screen eventually plugs the monitor back in. Once he plugged the one in front of him the others came to life too. It is that simple! .... LOL.

The fans at this concert are right against the security fence which is extremely close to the stage and his monitors. I saw everything taking place from where I was positioned at this concert. Take a look at a video taken at the same show from another angle czcams.com/video/waOp_cVluNg/video.html . You see the technician go right amongst the fans up against the barrier and plugs in/adjusts something just on the performer's side of the barrier. It was accidental. The fan was just hanging over the barrier with their arm(s) and something came lose. Could have been from the vibrations from the barrier who knows. Look where the technician is the fixing the problem..... he is right amongst the fans just on the stage side of the barrier. Don't go around calling people liars before looking at the facts.
I love Billy Joel- but it’s not the monitors fault 😂 HE should memorize his OWN lyrics. Granted there could have been a monitor malfunction, but it’s his responsibility to remember the words. Unfortunately he just screwed up, as he says in the video. In the end he played it off pretty well regardless.

I've been to a couple gigs where the artist has fucked up their lyrics but none of them made a joke out of it quite like he does. It's these personal touches which make real musicians such a pleasure to see.

well that's cuz it's a song with purpose. just like river of dreams, and so it goes, an innocent man, and several others.....the intent is to spark a memory and/or fill gaps in the memory of someone he was close with a long time ago. most don't even realize that the reference to the fire was literal, and the mention of Alabama in the song was related to the reference of the fire.
