I think it’s lost on everyone in the comments section that this song is literally about someone getting too wasted and acting like a fool and embarrassing themselves. It’s literally what the song is about...

I saw Billy Joel in Nov. 1989 - my first concert ever! LA Sports Arena - he started jumping on the closed piano. It was the most thunderous booming sound I had ever heard. The place was going wild - what an amazing show! I've been hooked on live music ever since!!!
I loved when he drunkenly warned the audience members not to drink &drive...and pointed out that the traffic is HORRIBLE & to be careful because people drive on the left side of the road in Moscow
I remember watching this on TV live in 1987 with my parents as we were all big Billy Joel fans. I was 10. I've been looking for this clip for decades, ever since I first heard of CZcams. Thank you for this upload.
@@SS-kz7td So true!!! I've found things on CZcams that I thought I'd NEVER see or hear again! Especially certain music from cassette tapes I had in the 80s and 90s, like "The Violet Burning" (I didnt know the band name before), "Good News Car Tunes," and "A Pac-Man Christmas." There are still others I struggle to find as I never knew the name of the artist or song, but I do have an old, poor quality dub of a melody I like, that was on the Yamaha Electone HX-1 1987 tour demo tape that I got, when attending a demonstration of the keyboard at my school and local music store. I've heard several songs used by that keyboard for demos, but not the song I'm actually looking for. I'm sure you've experienced similar joys of finding your favorites and also disappointments of not finding others. What have you discovered, or are still looking for?
@@CaptainFoufeu Oh man... I'm having a hard time recalling some, but I know there's been too many to mention. Going to stock car races with my dad as a kid were some of my fondest memories. I've found some videos of races that I attended as a kid, at local or regional tracks that really had no business being recorded. Most of these would have been in the early to mid 90's. Also, remember the TV show based on the comic Cathy? For some reason I remember watching a Valentine's Day special. I never cared for Cathy, but I remember my mom had recorded it, and it was on a tape with Garfield and some cartoon that I can't remember featuring junk yard cats, lol. Anyway, I remember as a really young kid, probably 4 years old, that it seemed very sad to me (I've always been sensitive). Also, I enjoy the videos of places or structures that I went to, or saw on vacation as a kid, that have since been torn down, but are preserved on youtube. It's fun to look at some of this stuff as an adult, and see either how close or how different it was from what you remember. Some of these videos may have 1,000 views and is more or less lost on the internet, but it can mean so much to people individually. Thanks for sharing that. I'm going to go through my saved videos and see if I can think of any more. Have you since thought of any more?
@@SS-kz7td Wow, I remember the comic strip of Cathy, but I didn't know there was an animated series of it. I think I may know what "junkyard cats" show you might be talking about. Try looking up "Heathcliff" (1980s) and "Top Cat" (1960s & 70s) and see if those might be the ones, as they featured junkyard / alley cat themes. I was always a huge fan of Garfield, too. I had a lot of the Garfield specials recorded on tape as well, along with ALL of the books up until the late 90s. This included the main daily comics collections, the Sunday Treasury series, the animated specials comic books, and special books such as "Garfied: His 9 Lives," "The Garfield Trivia Book", "Garfield's Book of Cat Names," "Garfield's Party Book," and more. I also had many of the children's storybooks including "Garfield's Judgment Day," which was supposed to become a feature length animated Garfield film for theaters, but was canceled before production was completed. I also agree and can confirm that there are A LOT of sports events that have been recorded but lost to time, and other events that were not recorded, but should have been, because people would have enjoyed it. Especially auto racing. During high school, I was a driver for my uncle's team in a private racing club that owned several tracks built on privately owned land in the Mojave Desert area (California, Arizona, & Nevada). That was fun. I got to race a lot of awesome cars. To describe it would take a long time to write and be a huge chunk of neverending text, but if you want to know about it, go ahead and tell me. I don't mind replying with some details about it, especially if you're an auto racing fan. Personally, I'm a writer, gamer, former chef and Army veteran. I'm a "decent" artist, and like to draw on occasion too. I usually like making my own car designs, comics, and starships for the sci-fi series I'm writing and hope to get produced to film someday. I usually spend most of my time gaming or writing, when I'm not working (Postmates, Amazon Flex). What do you enjoy?
This was from London....right before he went over to do the Russian shows. I remember seeing this performance on an episode of a documentary series Music Passport on MTV.....definitely not from Russia. In fact, the end credits list it at Wembley stadium.
I saw Billy in 1979 November 6th!! He wasn't to far off from this show!!! He was chugging Michelobe beers and running around like a total mad man!!! His drummer Liberty Diveto was giving Billy the finger!! They were having a blast on stage!!! Glad I didn't miss it !!! Great show!!!
"The Craziest Billy Joel Performance Ever!" A.K.A "The Night Billy Joel Went Completely Nuts!" Seeing Billy's wild antics in this video has me howling with laughter! His Sylvester Stallone impression starting at around 2:57 has me DEAD!!! 😂🤣😆
If he was on cocaine, he would have attempted the back somersault. If he was drunk, he would have forgotten the lyrics. This was a long, tiring performance of the night and he was high on adrenaline and exited to be the first American rock star to play in Russia! That’s it, he’s a performer, an entertainer!
Great show... He's just playing the part of the "big shot" in the song... did this quite often when he was younger... it's the big shot charatcter on display. :)

This was a concert in Soviet Russia in 1987. Billy was angry that whoever was in control of the lights kept lighting the audience. When the lights were low, the audience was getting into the music and dancing. When the lights got turned up, the audience would be afraid that the "authorities" would see them dancing and be able to recognize them. At one point during "You May Be Right," he actually shouts between verses "Quit lighting the audience," and "Stop it!" It was sucking the life out of the audience and he hated it. In order to try to keep the energy level up, he had this rather unorthodox performance.
