  • #208 from The Hymnal 1982: Closing Hymn for the Third Sunday of Easter at St. Bartholomew's, an Episcopal church in New York City on May 8, 2011.
This hymn was originally written in Latin, possibly in the 12th century, as "Finita iam sunt proelia" ('The battles are already over'). It was translated into English by Francis Pott in the 19th century.
The tune is "Victory", written by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina in the 16th century, and adapted by William Henry Monk in the 19th century.

LORD HAVE MERCY ! Your people still bow to the Cross as it passes in procession ! That great devotion was lost decades ago in America. A Blessing upon your faithful people ! What an inspiration !

One of the most beautiful of all Easter hymns. Few others so beautifully and so powerfully sum up the victory of Christ and His Church! Thanks so much for posting, Joseph! Blessings in the Risen Christ, and Happy Easter! -- John Donahue

I'm impressed. The congregants (at least in this section of the church) bow to the processional cross. A good cross section of men and women (not female dominated as in most Anglican/Episcopal and Roman Catholic parishes). A great hybrid hymn sung in many mainstream denominations, particularly liturgical ones like Lutheran, Anglican, ,and R .Cath.. The words by Protestant hymn writers but when sung to tune "Victory" the music by the Roman catholic Palestrina.

It was a (R.C.) Latin hymn translated by a Protestant.

A majestic Easter hymn especially with the three "Alleluias" at the beginning and end

There was a Priest in the New Testament. Only One, the LORD Jesus!

Right. And every properly ordained priest in our day stands in Christ's stead ("Persona Christi") before His flock in His church. There is only one priest who is worthy: Our LORD Jesus Christ. Soli Deo Gloria!

Nice to see a congregation who know to pay homage to the Processional Cross as it goes past.
